I just read George Vecsey's Bio on this great player. Let me start out saying, i was very misxed. I mean it was very well written and i couldn't put it down. And for good reason. Ever since I was watching baseball, I always was familiar with the name Stan "the Man" Musial, but i didn't know anymore than he was a hall of fame hitter. Reading this book open my eyes to whom he was and why he was one of the best.
However, I have a lot of problems with this book. First of all, Vecsey tries too hard to justify why Musial is one of the best players of all time and why it was a travesty he has been forgotten. Then how the book set out is a problem. He has these one/two page chapters that introduce the following chapters. That is totally unnesscery. He could have done a better job putting those intos in other chapters. It breaks the follow of the book. There is problems with telling a the bio. The story is more of study of Musial life and events around them (like Jackie Robinson), which half of it doesn't have to do with Musial. That bugs me. This is without saying, alot of the chapters are not chronological order (like the Polish chapter).
I mean there are chapters (few and far between) that are all about him, which are very good. And there are many facts I didn't know (like the Brooklyn-St. Louis rivaly). However I wanted something more then jumping around.
All and all, I was happy to get to know Stan the Man's flesh and blood, reather then the bones of bare facts and stats. However, I which it was done better.
If you want to know a basic about the man it is a book for you.
If you wnat somthing deep, stay away.
I give it 6/10.
