A Really Bad Idea

PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 2:04 pm

So, recently on a foray into youtube and various political pieces, so forth so forth (background isn't that important), I found myself seeing there was a channel for Ron Paul, curious - I looked.
I found this Television Advertisment, thinking what the hell - I checked on that frightening paradigm of American conservatism, Bachmann and found this, really thinking lul whut, I continued and saw for Gary Johnson.
Blah blah blah, checked a few others - I'm in a bemused state. Is this style of political advertising normal to the states?

Ron Paul's channeling Don LaFontaine. Intentionally, given the way his ad starts as if it were a movie trailer.

I would say that the most typical political ad right now runs along these lines:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp76ly2_NoI

Paid for by the National Organization for ________, the Friends of _________, Citizens for ________, Citizens Against __________, or what-have-you. Because there's a bewildering profusion of PACs and 527s and 501(c)3s and so forth, and they've all got something to say. A lot of it, right now, is about how natural gas is a safe, environmentally friendly fuel that will make us energy independent. Coincidentally paid for by energy companies.

In terms of inter-campaign rivalry, you get more than a few about how the opposing candidate is some kind of dangerous lunatic:

Or, based on some selectively edited video clips and snippets of vote history, "wrong for you, wrong for America."

I got that with Ron Paul, it was more the movie styling, and general way in which the message was conveyed. It really did feel like an encouragement of "vote for this person because they are this person" as opposed to "votes for this person because of their policies".

It is perhaps an oddity to me because televised advertisments is not something I have met here in elections. It just comes off as so utterly melancholic or dramatic. confused

Oh, yes, personality politics are very common. You get a lot like this:

Ack. There aren't words to describe how I felt about that - my response is emetic at best.

Who cares to be honest. It's just another form of entertainment, which is what America feeds off of. It's just an event for everyone to jack off to, but have nothing to show for it. I will be at home, not voting or watching the elections, but actually have something to show for it. dramallama

Yet somehow, despite ticking boxes for what should in some way entertain, it doesn't.

But that may be the "eww America is weird" reaction.
