It seems that from time to time people use these terms different;y in regards to what they mean in regards to a magical practice. So here is the discussion: What do you feel are the definitions of the above words?

Hmmm

Defining Witch if far to broad they are so versatile. If some dudes don't want to be called witches they call themselves Wizards. That's how I see it.

I don't see the terms Sorcerer and magician used often.
However when I think of Sorcerers I see them relying heavily on spirits and emotions.
I don't like the term magician, it just reminds me of a person entertaining children. Nevertheless if the person chooses to use that so be it.

Overall it's really hard to define these terms due to subjective judgement. /shrugs

Also I've seen some people use the term 'Warlock'. However it seems many people don't like it. It's probably due to the negative connotations associated with the term, but I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing.

Anything other than the dictionary definition is kind of a crap-shoot.

Here's the thing, all these words have a history. They all have their own original meaning. Some are older than others. Some were used to self identify and others were used as external labels. Today, most people don't have any idea of all that, so they just use the words the way they hear them used.

A wizard and a warlock were no where near the same thing, yet many males will use these terms rather than witch b/c witch has picked up a female conotation that wasn't there in the begining. Since all these names were, until very recently, used only in fantasy novels the field was clear to do whatever one wanted with them, and no one cared. Now that they are coming into mainstream use again, suddenly people care, b/c when you use the word wrong, you're messing with my identity. It's gotten personal.

And with new people jumping in, picking a word, applying a personal definition, and going forth with it, there's probably no end of the conflict in sight. It will always come down to original meanings vs language evolution. Both valid points, so wat are you gonna do?

I see them all as pretty much the same thing... But I prefer the term Warlock for myself, actually because of it's history and meaning.

Thats one of the things I am trying to do for myself is actually try and define these terms better. From what you've said about your path I would consider you a warlock as have have broke with traditions and typical magical pacts and created and found your own want to work magic. For you it is a science you are trying to develop and understand. That sounds like warlocks to me.

I cast a lot of enchantments on objects I wear of use. That to me is somewhat of a sorceress more than a witch. I'm also not against summoning the "spirits of the dead" to serve my every need. That's also associated with sorcery. Glamors and sex magic or using my sexuality to get what I want is defiantly how I play my games.

My personal view of these separate terms is as follows;

A witch is a practitioner of an esoteric religious based system of mysticism, often with a strong link to the elements and nature in general. An individual identified as such often practices this form of magic in accompaniment with the use of practical treatments such as herbal remedies and aroma therapy to accomplish desired results.

The terms wizard or sorcerer I feel are synonymous in that they may or may not have a religious link to their practices and engage in a wider variety of mystical workings from a wide array of origins rather than staying firmly with one particular type of magic. For example they may be well versed in the use of traditional spell workings from, for example, Druidic mysticism, but may also dabble in conjurations, Buddhist or Shinto traditional workings, and similar, For some the term may be merely the term they use to denote a male witch due to the stigma of the original meaning of the term "Warlock" as a breaker of oaths.

On the other hand magician can be, as stated above, a practitioner of stage magic or it can be a generalized term for anyone who practices some form of magic.

Ultimately each term has developed various stereotypes that can contribute to misunderstandings, therefore any definition you place upon each would be little else but personal opinion.
