Abandoned Gillespie Asylum

User Image

User Image

DESCRIPTION -
Once known as the Eris Gillespie Center for the Criminally Insane, this building is tucked behind the mountains south-west of Driftveil, and used to be a sanitorium for the deeply disturbed. Established many years ago and named for its first inmate (the wife of the prominent Doctor Harry Gillespie, who commissioned the asylum be built), it slowly emptied out over a period of several years as more and more of the doctors and orderlies stationed there either went missing or lost their minds, becoming inmates themselves. It was finally condemned and abandoned over two decades ago, and has since developed a nasty reputation for being haunted.

LOCATION -
On the far side of the mountain range beyond Driftveil City, amidst the impossibly dense woodlands. There exist very few ways of travelling there at all, let alone safely.

PEOPLE -
None. No one has resided in or around the Gillespie Asylum for over twenty years.

RESOURCES/EVENTS/PLACES OF INTEREST -
Nothing - Entirely abandoned, even most wild Pokรฉmon avoid this place.

MYTH/LORE -
Even during its time as a respected medical facility, the Gillespie Asylum had the highest reported incidents of missing faculty members. Very few people even remember this place, and those who do speak of it as though it were haunted by malicious spirits, since those who went missing in the building were never found. Even to this day, whenever a rumor begins to float around about it, those reckless enough to go investigating are not seen again.

In one of the many rooms of the decrepit sanitorium, two figures sat opposite of each other, eyes shut, breathing steadily. Beneath their closed eyelids, their eyes darted about, as if trying to see many things around them without using their sight. This was the process known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, and was the state of being most creatures entered into while dreaming. One figure was a child; a boy, no older than ten, who's dream seemed troubled. The other figure was an edlerly man, whose knuckles were clenched, his brow twitching as he dreamed away. There was no telling what the two were envisioning to an outside observer, but to a member of Team Nostros, it was clear that the older man was close to breaking another mind, turning it over to their side. For in this asylum...this cathedral to the macabre dreams of its twisted overseer...those placed in the Dreamscape of Doctor Tarrant Nicolai Vengtras le Soricer could only emerge one of two ways - a newfound member of Team Nostros, or too insane to function. The former of these were quickly placed into a uniform and directed to their Headquarters, ready to begin working. As for the latter...well, they were already in an asylum. It wasn't as though there was a shortage of cells for new inmates. From outside the door, Doctor Tarrant's loyal team of Pokemon stood huddled around, watching the process carefully. All of them as crazed as their trainer, they loved to observe him as he worked, viewing his subtle manipulation of the psyche as both a science and an art, which he had mastered most efficaciously. But this child seemed to be more stubborn than some of the recent 'patients' - it had been an hour, and still the boy's mind resisted. If the good Doctor wasn't careful, the child's mind would be lost, and that would be another candidate wasted. Nonetheless, they believed in their superior. He hadn't gotten where he was today performing at anything below first rate.

A few more moments passed, and suddenly, the child uttered a blood-curdling scream. He then collapsed onto the floor of the cell, unconcious. The good Doctor's eyes flashed open, and he peered down at the child without moving. Slowly, he rose to his feet, and brushed himself clean of the dust that had dared to settle on his clothes. Leaving the child on the floor, he moved to the cell door and exited, locking it securely behind him. He looked at his Pokemon, the corners of his mouth turned up into a slight smirk.
"Well, he was certainly a motivated one. I thought he might never break. But he shall be fine now" The six Pokemon nodded to each other, then turned back to their master as he added, "How are our guests?" He was referring to the other two members of Nostros who had come to visit him in his home away from home - Teapot, his Beheeyem, has projected via telepathy that the two had arrived while he'd been inside the new recruit's dreams, but Tarrant had insisted upon being allowed to finish his work. Motioning that the Pokemon follow him, the good Doctor checked once more that the cell door was secure, then made his way to the lobby of the building, where his colleagues had been asked to wait.

Come on, come on, you want to go even deeper in to meet

Waiting in the lobby of the asylum was a little girl, age 6. She was very pale, which was only accented by her white clothes and pigtails. Her hair, looking as if whoever put it up into pigtails had lost interest with bows, and decided to hold the other side up with white roses. Her eyes were a deep blue color, and almost eerie contrast to the rest of her appearance. But her eyes were not alert, they seemed glazed over. Almost dead, if you will, and when she looked at you, it was as if she stared, not into your eyes, but your soul. Just looking at the girl could send shivers down any spine. On top of her already creepy appearance, a violet-colored aura was constantly ebbing from her pale body, breaking off, at the ends, into orbs of violet light that slowly drifted towards the floor until it faded into nothingness. This was Shinku.

On her shoulders sat two Swoobat. This, alone, was an uncommon sight, considering a girl of her size should not be able to support the weight of 1 Swoobat on her shoulder, let alone 2 of them. When they were perched upon her, they, too, gained her aura...

This caused most to believe that once they were touching their master, her Psychic abilities kicked in, assisting her in holding them up with such ease.

Standing just behind her was a much taller girl, just as pale, if not paler, than the younger girl. This was Noir, and depending on who she was talking to at the time, she claimed to either be the elder sister of the young girl, or the one who was sent to protect her.

Within Team Nostros, there was not a single soul who did not know Shinku. After-all, she was said to be the daughter of the Moon Goddess, herself, sent to Earth to aid Team Nostros. The members of the cult worship Shinku as their deity.

Basically like Jesus for the Christians... minus the whole 'dying for your sins' stuff.

The Moon Princess waited for the Doctor in the lobby, with fellow Arbiter, Sophie, who was probably used to the girls lack of social skills. They sat silently until the doctor arrived.

Shinku, as she always did, drifted over to him, grabbing hold of his sleeve. Her face remained emotionless, as usual, as she simply hovered above the ground, her tiny hand wrapped lightly around some of the Doctors coat fabric. For some reason, whenever she saw him or her father, she always did this.

Sophie stood waiting in the spacious lobby of what used to be a fully functional asylum, the building now being the main area for the Doctor's research and experiments. In the lobby with her was one of Team Nostros top brass, the Moon Princess herself. The six-year old providing little company, silence permeating the room they stood in. Her attempts at conversation in vain, even though she tried directing most of the questions at the girl who claimed to be an elder sister to the young Arbiter.

Sighing, Sophie opted to instead play silently with her Frillish, Llewellyn. Making faces at the blue duel-type pokemon as it floated around the room. As restless as his trainer. They didn't have to wait much longer as the door to the lobby opened. Announcing the arrival of their much awaited host. Plucking Llewellyn from the air as he passed her for the fifth time, Sophie bounded over to the others.

"So Doc, doing anything important lately?" Sophie asked as she reached the two, smiling brightly at them. "Like something totally interesting?" She continued before anyone could answer her question, more or less forcing another question on him.

The good Doctor had not been standing in the lobby for a full minute before Shinku had crossed the room to him, clutching onto the sleeve of his dress coat in a manner he found most endearing. He couldn't help but smile pleasantly at this - despite his deplorable actions, and the dark ways in which he saw himself, some part of him still felt a basic human warmth towards the girl. When he had been a younger man, still clutching to his soap opera vision of the world, he dreamt of one day having children, and even grandchildren. In those days, he thought he would have made a exemplary father. Now, as the old and monstrous man he was, Shinku was the closest to a child of his own he'd ever achieve. Behind Shinku, as always, was Noir. Though he rarely spoke to her, Tarrant felt he and Noir had something of an understanding between one another, and so upon catching her eye, he passed her a respectful bow of the head. As the Doctor's Pokemon shuffled into the lobby behind him he turned to address Sophie, a sliver of a grin on his face.

"Ah, Mademoiselle Barnett. Welcome to my humble abode...my sanctuary of psychosis, as it were. You look ravishing, as always. I trust I did not keep you waiting long - I was in the midst of a Turning when I was informed you had arrived." The term 'Turning' he used seemed to carry some degree of weight to it, and referred (of course) to the process of making one a member of Nostros. "Another of the young ones. He was most obstinate at first, but I was certainly able to bring him around. He now rests upstairs - upon his recovery, he should be prepared to enter training." Once he'd answered Sophie, he dropped down to one knee and smiled at Shinku. "Always a pleasure to receive a visit from you, little majesty. I have something here for you." The good Doctor held up his free hand and, with a blur of motion as he flicked his wrist, a pair of chocolate-covered fruit candies manifested in his hand. He held them before Shinku, and smiled again. "Cherubi Cordials. Imported, from the finest candy shops of the outer regions."

Noir smiled and nodded to the doctor, as she always did. He didn't often speak to her, but she was alright with that. She got along with him. They had an almost unspoken bond, of sorts.... and of course, the fact that Shinku liked him was merely a bonus.

Romeo and Juliet, the two Swoobat's on the little girls shoulders, fluttered off of Shinku and flew to Noir, perching on her shoulders instead, as if mentally commanded to do so.

Shinku, still holding on to the Doctors sleeve, stared blankly up towards Sophie, as if looking through her, not so much at her. Her glazed blue eyes glistening only from the low light of the place. Her attention slowly moved to the doctor as he knelt to her and, almost from thin air, he produced sweets!

Her seemingly empty eyes stared at his hand for a moment, almost wondering how he had done such a thing before her tiny, free hand reached up and accepted the offering. "Thank you." Her monotonous voice barely audible to anyone who wasn't within a few feet of her.

Although her expression did not change, Noir stood beside her, a wide, childish grin on her face. Most speculated that since the Moon Princess was incapable of showing emotion, her emotions and the like were transferred to her sister, to be used as a sort of medium. These speculations, of course, were not far from the truth.

Noir's mind was the closest to Shinku's... in a sense, the were sync'd. So whenever Shinku was happy or angry, she never showed it.... but Noir, who feels her hidden emotions, does. You can, most of the time, know how Shinku truly feels by simply looking at her sister.

Shinku opened her mouth, making a small circle shape, no teeth showing and, plop, a piece of the candy disappeared inside. She slowly chewed the delicious confection as she listened to the other two talk, as well as peering inside their minds, as she did often.

Sophie simply nodded at the Doctor has he greeted her, explaining the reason for their wait. "A turning huh? Sounds fun!" Sophie remarked watching the interaction between her coworkers. The two were obviously rather close too each other despite Shinku's standoffish manner. "Where's the boy gonna go once he's all recovered?" She asked interested in whose branch the newest member would be most suited for. "Any ideas?" She continued releasing Llewellyn from her grasp, the pokemon opting instead to float beside her. Wherever the boy went to it would be up to that branch to train him, though of course it wouldn't be an Arbiter's job to do so. They had much more important things to do.

"Other than the turning, is there anything else that's going to be happening today?" Sophie questioned, ready to do something other than standing around. If there was nothing maybe she would go and spy on people some more. It would at least be more interesting than doing nothing. Plus, it would present many blackmail opportunities that wouldn't have been there otherwise. "If not, we should all go play somewhere!"

The good Doctor smiled once again as the girl devoured her treat. He rose to his full height once again, and looked to the Dream Arbiter, making a gesture that implied a lack of knowing. "I really couldn't say, Mademoiselle. After all, that decision lies with Superior, not with I. Though if I had to make an educated hypothesis on the matter, I would wager his mental fortitude would fit him comfortably with either your branch or her young majesty's here. He would fare poorly in mine, I'm afraid...he lacks a certain darkness." He then shrugged, adding, "And no, I have completed my tasks for the day. We can make our egress now, if you wish." Motioning to the exit, he turned and looked at his Pokemon. "Alright, Cheshire and Bandersnatch, you're with me. The rest of you, I am leaving this place in your hands. Inform me immediately if anything comes up. Teapot, once that boy wakes up, send word to Headquarters and let them know to expect another recruit."

With that, the good Doctor walked ahead and pushed open one of the double doors, his Eelektross pushing open the second. As his Liepard sidled through the doorway, Tarrant looked to the other two Arbiters. "Shall we, ladies?"

Still holding on to the Doctors sleeve, she floated beside him until he, and his Eelectross, opened the doors. She then, slowly, let go of her hold and accepted the invitation, drifting through the open doors and outside.

Noir followed behind her as well, nodding her head to the doctor as she passed, as sort of a 'thank you' from both Shinku and herself for holding the door for them. The two Swoobats on her shoulders hardly seemed to weigh anything at all to the older pale girl. Most in the cult did wonder, though....

If Shinku was the daughter of the Moon Gods.... and Noir was her older sisters... why were they to only worship Shinku?

Of course, there was no answer to this but to simply accept things as they were.

Shinku used one of her little hands to grab another chocolate, popping it in her mouth and chewing it as she waited for the other two.

Sophie nodded, a bright grin alighting her features as she followed Shinku into the courtyard, Llewellyn following close behind her. She was excited about the prospect of causing some amount of trouble, and enhancing her reputation outside of Team Nostros. After all one could only become famous if one worked hard enough for it. "Well then, we should get going no?" Sophie remarked animatedly, moving past the younger Arbiter with ease. "We shouldn't keep the world waiting!" She continued, moving around the vast courtyard with the energy of a child.

Stopping herself at the exit to the courtyard, looking back at her two co-workers. "Hurry up you two!" Sophie called back, waving at the other Arbiters, "Your gonna get left behind!" With that said, Sophie turned on her heel and continued on too restless to sit still for much longer. Taking out a small notebook, she flipped through it absentmindedly as she walked through the Asylum's grounds. Excited for what was to come.

The good Doctor had nodded in kind to Noir as she trailed behind Shinku, still wearing a small smile even as Sophie followed behind them in all her enthusiasm. In many ways, he considered these three girls - perhaps even all of the young members of Nostros - as his own family. Watching their diverse attitudes surface, observing as they demonstrated their own unique set of personality quirks (such as the contrast between Noir's cold stoicism, Shinku's benevolent silence, and Sophie's endearing impatience) reminded him of his youth, and how he'd once been the same. It always sent him for a bit of a loop to think that so many decades ago, he had been blind to all the foibles and subtle changes in people's dispositions. Of course, he had come to properly understand the full spectrum of human emotion and thought process; it was that very mastery that found him where he was in his organization, as the man referred to as "The Nightmare King" by those within Nostros.

He shook his head, realizing he'd entered one of his mental tangents. Odd that he should feel so reflective today. Shrugging, he allowed the door to close behind him, strolling into the courtyard alongside Shinku, nodding down to her.
"Come along, little majesty. We've a train to catch." Following this, he turned his head, having lost sight of Sophie. "Mademoiselle Barnett! Do come back here! We must make our way to Driftveil, then board the Subway to Striaton! With alacrity, if you please!" The good Doctor's strides towards the edge of the asylum grounds were slow, but purposeful, and he began to trace the line of the trees above their destination. It was, to say the least, an aggrivating affair to meander through the forest to the coast, then traverse the coast to Driftveil...but it was safer than the journey through the mountains would be, and these girls were under his supervision.

Both Cheshire and Bandersnatch (the good Doctor's Liepard and Eelektross, respectively) slunk at their master's side. They were also not terribly fond of the path to Driftveil, but at least it kept them from engaging in battles with those neanderthal-esque wild Pokemon. So undignified. Besides, there was only one reason for them to head to Striaton - they were on their way to the Dreamyard, where sat Nostros' main base of operations. If these two diabolic Pokemon knew their master, the time had come to rally the troops together for the next stage of their plan. This fact in of itself was enough to send Chesire's fur bristling up with anticipation, while Bandersnatch's face seem fixed with a ferocious grin - a facial expression which looked all the more gruesome and disturbing on the EleFish Pokemon. They really couldn't wait to learn of what was to come next, and they nodded to each other wickedly as they continued out of the asylum grounds.

Shinku slowly turned to watch the enthusiastic girl rush ahead. Her lack-luster eyes lazily following Sophie to the end of the path. Without looking away, she reached her arm up, grabbing the doctors coat in her timy hand as if she knew exactly when he would be within grabbing distance.

She continued to chew the cherry cordial in her mouth slowly, savoring it's sweet and creamy flavor for as long as she could stand before swallowing it. Her free hand reached into her dress pocket, digging around in it for a little before she realized that she had eaten the last one.

Oh well... it was good while it lasted. She was certain she would get more eventually. She took her hand out of her pocket and let it dangle beside her once again.

Noir, with Romeo and Juliet (Shinku's 2 Swoobats) on her shoulders, shrugged with ease and sighed at the Dream Arbiter. She had come to expect it by now, but it was still a bit tiresome. She turned to the Nightmare Arbiter and smiled, giving him a shrug as well, as if to say 'well, what can ya do?'

Shinku didn't move an inch, however, until the good Doctor had done so, staying beside him every inch of the way with Noir following behind her.

Shinku's feet rarely touched the ground. The girl was always surrounded by a purple aurora which most assumed was what kept her levitating. Her psychic powers were definitely to be feared, and no one ever dared questioned it.
