A typical outline that you probably forgot made in school are the outlines that pretty much lay out what you expect to have in a novel, historical document etc.:

  • A. Main Story Arc (or chapter detail)
    • 1. Details about characters, specific scenes, etc.
    • 2. More details about specific scene that's slightly different from point 1.
      • a. Even more detail added that go with points 1 or 2, like quotes you want to use or details on weaknesses or caveats of the character(s).
      • b. More detail you want, if necessary.

  • B. Main chapter
  • C. Main chapter

    • A. Story starts off with Elfman living a cheerful life in Antarctica making presents for the wolves in Uzbekistan. Wolves in Uzbekistan are evil, wretched animals.
      • 1. Recycling presents of stuffed bunnies from the Easter holidays.
      • 2. Stuffs them with chocolate, blood, lucky rabbits feet, and dog food.
        • a. "This will be great!" Elfman says as he stuffs in packets of negative O blood he stole from the hospital.
        • b. "I love giving to less fortunate animals!"
    • B. Elfman rides his sled down to Uzbekistan, but wolves hate his presents.
    • C. Elfman gets chased by wolves with chainsaws.

    etc....

A.

1.

2.

a.

b.

B.

C.
Or maybe you would like a small synopsis of your chapters. Plan out every chapter to have something the characters are doing.

    Chapter 1:
Elfman runs around giving out presents to the shameful wolves living in poverty in the outskirts of Uzbekistan.

    Chapter 2:
Elfman gets chased by wolves and chainsaws.

    etc...

What, you don't like it? Think elves shouldn't be chased by chainsaws once in a while?

    Or are you ... afraid?

Afraid that someone is going to read your wonderful idea about wolves and elves and chainsaws and *gasp* copy it.

I mean, this is hardly a place where your words can become invisible...

What if you don't want others to see your Next Big Thing?

Well, you can disguise it. Instead of saying the characters' names, why not abbreviate them?

    Chap 1:
E goes to UZ to give away presents to W.

    Chap 2:
E gets chased by CHAINS from W.

    etc...

Ooh sneaky! Sounds even more intriguing! What? That's too confusing? You'll end up wondering wtf you wrote?

Why not keep a journal then?

Gaia has journals on it so that you can use them to post almost anything you want!

Just set your settings to private, then write your outline out! Then come in here, make a thread, and post your progress on your outline.

Sure you may not see the point, but it would still be nice to see that you're starting something now -- fully committed to completing it once November rolls around.

Hey, it's better than frantically throwing together random stuff and hoping it will stick like you do every year. emotion_bigheart
