I haven't seen really that many "viral outbreak" movies in my life time, but Contagion's story takes the usual plot of a simple epidemic or viral outbreak and the main characters have to figure out where it came from and how to stop it or if it can be cured etc etc etc. So its your typical "viral outbreak" movie elements. I don't know about other movies like this, but this one had a feeling of realism to it. I'm not sure how "real" the elements are in regards to real life outbreaks such as displayed in the movie, but what made the movie unique is that it makes you see things differently or think differently about the environments around you; it easy it is to spread something, how many times you touch your face in a single day, and more interestingly; just how fast a simple virus come spread.
Its the little things that help add spice to the major plot. And you have four separate stories going on; you've got a mother who's traveling in Hong Kong but comes home with weird symptoms and died, you've the father who's immune to the virus but who's daugther could easily catch it since she has the half genes of her mother whom caught the virus and also the son of the mother caught it from his mom and he died. so the father is bouncing around trying to survive while his daughter is kept inside for obvious reasons; we've got the story of the political/high officials that are trying to deal with the crisis, and lastly got the story of the scientists dealing with the virus hands on, as the movie bounces back and forth between each side story seemlessly, it slowly connects the plot between each story, how they're all connected, and eventually tells you at the very end how the virus got started.
There really isn't any gore of any kind but the way the movie was executed has a disturbing creep factor to it. Especially in parts where civillians start to panic and makes it ever more creepy and then you've got the creep factor at the end of how the virus even got started on something so simple its ridiculous, but ridiculous in a good clever way.
On a letter rating from A-F I give this movie a B-.. Wasn't super duper exciting and was pretty basic plot, but it was cleverly strung together and had me on the edge of my seat to be honest. Very much liked this.
Horrorize Me, Cap'n!
Take all the innocent things you've ever loved, and make them HORROR!
