I actually already have a NaNo novel called Steampunks but I'm reusing the name until I can think of something better.
I'm thinking that this year's story is set in two realities. One in which a writer is going day by day through November writing his novel and find his story seeming to come to life around him.
The other reality is inside the steampunk world he is writing about. It is set in post Civil War Kentucky. The United States of this world is a collection of small countries and city states separated by vast tracts of wilderness with centaurs taking the place of Native Americans. Drow control the Mammoth Cave system that extends for hundreds of miles in all directions. These drow aren't as dark or as evil as the usual variety though.
And...... more to come as I think about it.

I think I've decided NOT to switch between worlds and just forget about the author writing the story in the real world. That feels like cheating since I know I could get tons of words out of the real world just by describing the day and the stuff lying around the author's den.
Right now it will start with an attack on a train carrying Confederate secrets. There may be a battle with a clockwork mobile suit and the Union group will rescue a dark elf girl. Later the Union commander will turn traitor and kill off the rest of the group so he can sell the Confederate secrets himself and get rich. The hero of the story and the dark elf girl will survive and spend the story tracking him down.
