Title says it all. How do you prepare for Nano (usually)? Do you make an outline? Do you wait until Halloween and then go, "OH CHEESE BALLS WHERE DID TIME GO?!" and frantically make up something that sounds semi-plausible? What? XD
Ehhhhh, I think I just completely prepared with whatever notes I've thrown together in my notebook, and MAKE SURE I stay up till midnight and write as many words as I can until I die of sleep. XDD
Oh man, what sucks about this is, I may go to Texas this November! Uh oh! D:

Generally I don't like to start even thinking about planning until the week leading up to November. This is largely because once a character has arrived in my head, they tend to take over - and I'll have sentences and bits of dialogue turning up in my head.
Now this is a bad thing, because to write these down would count as actual novel-writing rather than notes and planning, which is Against The Rules. So once they turn up I tell them to shush and try not to think about them too hard until October 31st.
I've had years when the idea or the characters arrived earlier and it was hard not to do anything until Nov 1. So I try to limit my thinking time to the last week coming up to November. And during this week I'll jot down ideas about characters, possible plot points, etc - but I'll look back at these notes in December and aside from characterisation, most of them will be so bizarre and different to what the novel ended up being.
I do tend to do "Dear character" stuff and similar in the NaNo forums and I'll get a solid idea of who the characters are from these letters and exercises so I tend to copy those into my notes as well. It's most important for me to find and build the characters, because they're the ones who do all the actual novel-building. No character, no novel - plot isn't really something I worry about.
My country is near the date line, so I'm one of the first to start writing, which is awesome fun biggrin My wordcount bar is one of the first to start ticking and I can be ahead of everyone! For a few hours, anyway xd

I have my basic outline done already, although it needs fine-tuning and some research. From here, I'll probably set it aside and spend my time slowly editing my current novel, which is supposed to be done by Nov. (But won't be sweatdrop )
I'll tell myself not to get distracted by Halloween, and then I will totally get distracted by Halloween, including lots of movie watching and way too much time wasted on Gaia and Pet Society. gonk
Thus distracted, I will forget to do research and fine-tuning, leading to a mad rush to finish the details on November 1st while saying 'Screw the research. I'll do it later'.
Somewhere along the way, I might also get the random urge to create cover art, banners, soundtracks, etc. Because there always seems to be time for stuff that ISN'T vital to the writing itself. xp

Well actually I need to stick on like 30k in wordcount rather than editing, which will not happen. crying So I'll probably end up working on it throughout November alongside my NaNovel.

I need to do both. gonk There's editing right now, along with bits of rewriting, and I also need to write a completely new ending. Not sure how many words yet. Thankfully, the Nano is a sequel to this, so I'll be working with the same characters and world and all that.

I always tell myself not to start plotting until September, but usually my brain is already working away at trying to come up with something. It hit a little later then usual this time around, about the second week of September. So I've been writing down names, plots points and structure down all over the place. Even doing a little research =p
And now that it's October I'm allowed to do more of the solid plotting, setting up threads, making graphics and soundtracks and all that jazz. But my life situation is very different from all other years so my NaNo time is really random and short D:
And then of course, the dreaded/excited for Halloween activities that throw NaNo under a bus rolleyes

I actually took my own advice last year and decided to start plotting in October. I'm a little slow because of school and other commitments, but I'm actually outlining pretty well in my little post here. So that changed. Normally I don't plan anything, aside from having an idea.
On October 31/November 1 (however you call midnight, being the day before or the next day) at midnight I start writing. Usually I write for an hour or two - since I unfortunately have school this November and remember what it was like last year. Then I sleep and pick up later in the day.
This year some things changed. In order to deal with the work load I'll have this November (it's finals month since I get off for the semester December 5) I've started outlining pretty early, as I said. I'm talking going from general ideas into specific scenes which will either become more specific later this month or I'll be making them more specific as I write them.
I'll also be writing during the minutes between classes (maybe even in lulls between classes) which I did last year, but might be more integral this year. And since I'm writing my NaNoWriMo this year for a friend I'll take the weekends to revise the previous week's work and continue writing. I'd like to not make him wait a month and then get snowballed by mass PM's ;p
Oh yeah, and I'm totally having a rootbeer float and some popcorn sprinkled with kettle corn seasoning the night I start writing this year :3

Well since this is only my second year doing NaNo I don't exactly have a set routine. However if I was to make one it would be to make sure I have an outline ready and a couple of character sheets done as well for easy reference. Other than that I'm trying to take it easy, not think about my novel and ignore the nagging voice in my head to start writing early. Also doesn't help that I am in the middle of a pretty major home renovation project so that's eating up my prep time, though it will hopefully be all done before November starts.

Sanguina Cruenta That was my situation, needing a new ending. I still have quite a ways to go, though... I know it can be done in the time I have left, I just don't think it's going to be wink Yep. That's the way it goes. Although it does feel kinda strange saying "I can't get this 15-20k rewritten in a month, but join me next month, when I'll be writing 50k fresh!" xd Ah well, that's the madness of Nano.

In October I usually start reading No Plot? No Problem! by NaNoWriMo founder Chris Baty. It is both useful and funny as heck.
I also start carrying my clipboard around more often while at work so that I can take notes on story ideas AND look busy at the same time. blaugh
I also do a little bit of research into my subject matter and locations.

Since I've never done this before, this is what I do to write a story:
~Notes, notes, notesnotesnotes. I take my sketchpad everywhere when I've got an idea.~
~BUILD FROM THE GROUND UP- I make the world, then populate it. Characters should fit the setting, not the other way around. My country is established long before the first main charry is.~
~STORYBOARDS. I draw stuff! It is relevant! And it makes things so much easier!!~
~I crumple up thousands of pieces of paper, for reasons stated above.~
~Fake it 'til you make it. If it's not good, make it better! If it doesn't sound right, wirte it again 'til it does! WRITING IS AN INVESTMENT, A COMMITMENT!!~
~SO COMMIT TO IT!!!~

I like having a vague idea of what I'm doing at the very least. I did the Camp Nano thing in September, and literally picked my idea an hour before it began, but every other time I've known what I was going to do by October. Otherwise, so long as I have a base idea, I'm happy- I find that planning too much makes me feel like I have to stick to that original idea, even when better ones come up, so I make sure I don't feel restricted.

I try and come up with a structured outline, but usually I don't even decide my story premise until it's SO close to NaNo.
I just barely thought of the idea of a prequel right now, for instance.
In the end, I guess I could say I end up saying "HOLY CRAP, it's Holloween! Where did the time go?!"

Okay, not a routine exactly, but it's apparently happening this year.
Around the 08th, randomly decide to write a different novel than the one you've been planning for. gonk
Now comes the time for panic, as I rush to put together a character list, setting and plot, all from scratch. cat_burning_eyes
