You know, not all of the hype is justified. So many agents and publishers are looking for the NEXT BIG THING, but that Next Big Thing could fall short of your own expectations.
Read any series that haven't been up to par lately? The latest one I read this year was the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I absolutely hated all three books, with the exception of the second book after page 200 when something actually happens. The ending of the second book was the only great part that I enjoyed (who doesn't love *spoiler* an angry girl with a hatchet?) But there were many parts I had to skip either because it was too gruesome and disgusting, or there was no point in reading a grocery list (I mean, really? Did he HAVE to put a paragraph worth of what she freakin' bought?)
Any series you just can't get into and why? Make sure you have a spoiler warning! Coloring in white will do (or tiny size font).

This isn't a series, but I hated Paolo Bacigalupi's Hugo & Nebula award-winning "The Windup Girl". Amazing world building and the worst pacing I've ever suffered through. Well over 200 pages of unpleasant, disgusting characters complaining about buying fruit and then abruptly the entire city is wiped out New Orleans style when the seawall breaks.

I really liked the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. True, I do believe that they could have definitely benefited from a good editor who could have cut out at least 100 pages, but I think the whole 'death' thing kind of got in the way of that :/
It's been a while since I read something I didn't like. I'm starting to live by the belief that if you don't like the first two chapters then you shouldn't waste your time trying to force yourself through it. There are too many good books in the world to waste reading time on!
That said, Sarah's Key got really famous after I read it and I never really thought it was written well enough to deserve the attention. Even if the story is worth telling.

AH, I don't know why you did like it! Buuut it is a popular series, and the author did do a ton of interesting research into hackers and the methods they use to overcome the system. That was interesting. But yeaaaah ... I thought Blomkvist was Fabio and all the women were just falling all over themselves for him. *sigh* At the end of the series I really wish someone would shoot Blomkvist, but I didn't even get that! He's just soooo aweeesome that he can block a random gun thrown at him. *rolls eyes* I mainly read it because my dad bought me the series and I never get books on Christmas. Idk I felt like it was special. D:
Heh, but I think I've just given up on fiction. I'm mostly into nonfiction books now. XD

I would have been fine with Blomkvist dying. He was a bit of a tool. I was mostly into it for the Lisbeth and the hacking!

The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare. I know what people say about her positively and I know what people say about her negatively. I'm sort of in the middle ranging to negative after the first book. But overall this series should not have been hyped as much as it was. And here's why.
First book was damn awesome. I really really liked it and that was despite Jace, the a*****e main protag who treats his friends and love interest like crap but is usually the most well-liked character by the fans trope. It did read a little like fanfiction at times but I could deal with it. THEN THE SECOND BOOK HAPPENED.
I don't really think this is a spoiler but if you don't wish to know that the second book is largly Jace centric and that he is even more of an arse, which I didn't think possible after he STILL treated Alec (who nearly died to impress him) and Clary (requisite love interest) like s**t in the first and opening to the second book (note: I WAS WRONG) well then, it won't spoil you.
I still want to read through the second book and the third one because I loved Alec Lightwood and Magnus, even though he was sterotypically cringe worthy a large amount of the time. Just wish I wouldn't have to plough through Jace Jace friggin Jace to get to their regrettably short parts.
Note: This is all just my opinion. Maybe some people actually like Jace and see that he simply struggles really hard to be good and usually fails. I can like characters like that fine. But in my opinion? Jace didn't even try most of the time. So just, urggggh.

So just, urggggh. *groan* I feel like I need to force myself to read those books because I'm writing an urban fantasy thing, and two of the main characters are named Magnus and Alex. And mr. rainbow sparkle-mage is mostly what comes up when I look up the name Magnus on every art site ever. sweatdrop (That and Transformers, where apparently Magnus is a title of some sort.)
