Please bear in mind, this is still an on-going project.

Since I always seem to cause unnecessary attention from security sporting around my "Big Tex" Cap Gun in a leather gun holster [1] [2] and replica rifles, I've personally started to modify my own Nerf Guns as an alternative weaponized accessory to my costume(s).
As the first one up for modification, I went stereotypical and chose the most widely used Nerf gun for Steampunk, the Maverick. I guess the huge spinning barrel is more than enough to garner all the appeal, but nonetheless, since this will most likely be the one I make the most mistakes on, I figured I'd start with it. pirate
Now I forgot to create a thread here for this project, so be prepared for a large info dump to catch everyone (who's interested) up on the details and process. Comments, criticisms and curses are all welcome, but let's try and keep things constructive if at all possible.

Pictures taken "Out of the Box":

Out of the Box "Inner Guts" picture for my own Reference.
Maybe they'll help someone else as well?

After having taken all the reference pictures I hope I need to rebuild this thing back to factory specifications, I began to sand down the whole gun starting with either an 80 or 100 grit, I forget which, but since they are both medium size grits, it really doesn't matter that much for this project. After it is all sanded down, it was rinsed with warm water and dish washing soap. After all the excess dust has been removed, gun was FULLY dried and re-sanded in all the places that had been over abraded with a 120+ grit sand paper to get the surface area smoothed out again (but unless you want that beaten up look on your own project, feel free to leave it as is).
