I can't really recommend these books enough. If you are tired of vampires being portrayed as misunderstood pretty boys, and want the blood-suckers of our darkest nightmares again, please pick up a copy of The Strain with all possible haste from your local library or bookstore.
In a homage to Bram Stoker's Dracula, our tale begins with a dead plane that lands in JFK airport with no explanation about why it died upon landing or why all but four passengers were dead upon arrival. Soon it becomes clear that vampires are real and they've been waiting in the shadows for their time. A pair of CDC doctors and an exterminator join an aged professor that collects more than just pawned items in the quest to eradicate this threat before it's too late.
These books are very readable... it's much like a movie. These vampires are also kind of... well, disgusting. It's definitely not something that you want to be romanced by at any rate. The undead are scary again basically. The final volume in the trilogy is scheduled for release toward the end of this month so I'm looking forward to seeing how the vampire apocalypse turns out.
