Shelley had a rough night. He'd been up until sunrise wandering the city. At first he'd tried to find the clock tower, which kept poking it's head between buildings to mock him, but eventually he was so lost he couldn't even find his way home. His habit of wandering down alley-ways that felt especially auspicious was little help and as the sun rose he resigned himself to yet again sleeping in a doorway for a few fitful hours.

He was woken up soon enough by his own rumbling stomach and decided to try and find his own bed. He wandered the streets- sometimes seeing streets he'd recognize only to realize he'd gone the wrong way, or turned on the wrong side street, and was once again lost.

As he walked down yet another nondescript street or alley, the smell of coffee and cake hit him like a brick wall. He was suddenly reminded of how hungry he was and decided to give up the search and get some food.

Shelley barely noticed the outside as he hurried into the cafe, food the only thing running through his mind, but as he walked in he was stopped dead by the atmosphere.

The cafe was largely deserted, with one small group of city people in the corner having a hushed conversation. There was a tranquility through the air that pierced straight though Shelley and made him immediately forget about last night's worrisome adventure.

He sat down at a nearby table and took a cursory glance through the menu, looking for the largest thing there. He almost felt rude, piercing the silence with his loud voice, but the waitress didn't seem bothered, so he brushed the worry from his mind and tried to cover up his anxious anticipation by reading the carvings in his table.

Inkleaf! Estra did not pop down to Gellisham very often, not when most everything she and Vlad needed could be procured from the Cheppinhew markets. But sometimes when she had a moment - or a penny - free, she could not help but wander to that cozy little cafe. Perhaps it was the (relatively) open spaces in the lower layer, perhaps it was the rolling fields, but there was something about Gellisham and something about Inkleaf that made its baked goods seem that bit different from those in Cheppinhew, that bit more fresh, that bit more...wonderful. And so here she was!

She was about to float over to the selection of pretty pastries to pick out a few (one for Tali!) as she usually did, when a vaguely familiar figure seated near the entrance caught her eye. She looked over, curiously at first, her hazy memories slowly rearranging pieces to fit this puzzle of a face...when it suddenly clicked: "You're the boy from the garden!"

Shelley hadn't realized he had fallen asleep, but he was most certainly dreaming. Looking up at the woman of his dreams, Shelley's mouth dropped open. He was suddenly painfully aware of his disheveled appearance and wished more than ever that he'd found a bed last night. He tried to say hi, but all that came out was a high-pitched squeak and a goofy smile.

She tilted her head, bright-eyed, as she awaited his introduction - but when the little squeak emerged, she couldn't help but laugh, a delighted peal. What an odd, charming smile he had! Perhaps he was very shy? "Hello, hello!" she said, beaming and reaching for his hand, "my name is Estra! What's yours?"

Get yourself together! he thought in a panic, staring dumbly at her outstretched hand. After an uncomfortable pause, his brain finally caught up with him and he shot out of his chair, straightened his hair, cleared his throat a little too loudly, and shook her hand, all while doing his best impression of "acting normal."

"I'm Shelley. You're... This... I'm Shelley. Do you want to sit?"

"Oh, yes, please, thank you very much," and she taken the chair opposite his, entirely forgetting that she'd only come here to pick up some pastries, and the list of chores she still had for the day. This was the boy from the garden, and she had so much to talk to him about! "I thought we would see you at dinner last night," she immediately started, completely guileless, "were you busy?"

A bloom of red erupted on his cheeks. He didn't want to admit that he'd spent the entire night desperately searching for the party, but all the excuses he could think of were worse than being lost. Finally, after a minute of attempting to stall with "ummms" and clearing his throat, he stared at the table and admitted.
"I tried really hard to get there, but I get lost so easily in this stupid town, and I still have no idea how to get home. I don't even know where home is."

The blush slowly spread over his cheeks until his whole face turned red, and he started to wonder what was taking the waitress so damn long with his food.

"Ohhh," Estra's little heart was completely captivated by his sad tale. Leaning across the table earnestly, she said, "Don't worry! I'll help you find your way home! And I'll show you to my clocktower too, then you'll know where to find us!" Never mind that she had the directional sense of a rock, that it took many days to even learn the way to this very cafe, that she would forget their destinations over and over again in the next few hours - Estra would help this poor boy even if she got them both killed doing it. Not that the possibility would ever even occur to her.

Shelley stood up before he knew what was happening, his heart jumping even higher.

"I think that would be great." He couldn't help but grin.

aaaaand of course just then the waitress came walking over with a bagel that smelled so delicious he thought he'd pass out right there. She shot him a grumpy look and said something in a font that looked a little more sharp than he would like, but he was too busy staring at the food to read whatever she'd said.

"I just need a little food first." He muttered and immediately started shoving the food into his mouth, taking the biggest bites he safely could.

She had to laugh again - how funny he was, how nice! "Oh no, no," she said, "take your time! Enjoy your bagel, it looks delicious - I shall have a pastry to accompany you with." It would not be so different from what she had planned, she would just have her share here and take one home for Tali. "I'll be back in a moment!" And finally she was at the counter, as she'd intended coming in, picking out the pretty little tarts.
