A few important announcements:
1. I have moved this rp to the main rp forum. This is because it would be amazing if more bronies and pegasisters joined us, and I would have no objection to it. Everypony welcomed---no more privateness! -you still need to apply first though-
2. I changed the rule about the word limit. In fact, I'd like you guys to write at least 150 words. Since this is kinda a semi-lit/lit roleplay, I'd prefer us to not have anything shorter. PM me if you have questions. :3

The Story
It has been seven years since the defeat of Discord. Since then, most of Equestria has lived in peace and tranquility. The six heroines who wielded the Elements of Harmony faded from the spotlight into their various humdrum lives, getting married, having foals, winning their own fames and fortunes… then one day they vanished altogether. For five years they were simply… missing. Their families moved on, assuming as they only could, that they had died. The world forgot, though a few never did.
Then, on a particularly bright and sunny day, Canterlot was attacked. The news of the defeat, the destruction, was carried by the few survivors. Celestia and Luna were overwhelmed by six helmed ponies with no cutie marks, wielding terrible powers. The citizens of Equestria had no other name for such creatures, so they called them the only name they had.
Nightmares.
The strongest of the six was called Nightmare Rot. Her armor was etched with trees, but the design was covered by dings and dirt from innumerable fights. She took particular care to destroy the food supplies of places they attacked, crippling the rebuilding efforts or any who tried to remain in an area they ravaged.
The fiercest was called Nightmare Savage. She never dirtied her hooves; instead she unleashed her various pets; starved ursa minors and manticores with a taste for slow-running ponies. Though she was a Pegasus, she rode from place to place in a bear-drawn chariot.
Nightmare Gem also did not like to sully her hooves. Her armor was always clean, and set with innumerable diamonds, rubies, sapphires… gems of ever shape and color. She did not fight, but turned her prey into crystalline statues. If she liked you, she would smash your effigy and put a piece of you upon her armor until a pretty stone caught her eye.
Those unlucky enough to face Nightmare Storm were offered only one choice: run. They were given a three second head start, then the Nightmare pursued. If you made it for ten seconds, you were allowed to live. If not… well, no one made it past five seconds.
By far the cruelest was Nightmare Balloon. Her attacks were erratic, her methods ever changing. Some days she would skin a pony who was still alive and wear their pelt, trotting around their terrified children. Other times she pumped them full of air till their lungs popped. Other times she simply stomped on them until they were no more. She did it all with a smile, a song, or a laugh, one that the mere mention of sent many ponies cowering.
The six were led by Nightmare Dusk. Little was known about Dusk’s methods; she had fought no one but Celestia herself. No witnesses had survived to say what she fought like, or even looked like. She was an enigma, a shadow.
Until now Ponyville had been safe from the Nightmares, who focused more on big cities like Canterlot and Manehattan. The residents live in relative peace, some denying the Nightmares’ existence as overexcited travelers and ghost stories. After all, the sun still rose and set, as did the moon and stars. Surely there was nothing truly wrong with the world…

Little colts and fillies shrieked through the streets of Ponyville, all in various stages of being dressed up in costumes.
Tomorrow night was Nightmare Night, and it seemed like everypony was already ready to celebrate.
The sound cart wheels creaking and slow hooves plodding got a few of the fillys' attentions, and they began to shyly follow the Fortune Teller as she made her way through town.
Instead of her usual simple cape, Crystal Ball had layered on jingling crimson scarves and clinking gold bangles in full gypsy getup. She made sure her hair was extra curly, and layered on the thick black eye makeup. She was the same thing for Nightmare Night every year, but it never got old. There was a special place in her heart for Nightmare Night, and she gave fortunes to the young ponies for free.
She carefully arranged her stand, dragging her table out in front of the cart. It was small, and covered with a large starry cloth. On top, she set up her mystical crystal ball. The insides were swirling with purple and blue glitter as the smoky liquid moved on its own.
After putting up her sign (Nightmare Night Special! Free readings by Madame Crystal!) and meditating to clear her mind, she hopped up on the top of her cart.
“Attention, citizens ahv Ponyville! I, Crrrystal Bahl will be geeving free psychic readings to ahl little colts ahnd fillies tonight ahnd tomorrow night only!”
She used her horn to shoot off a few sparkling waterfalls of fireworks, completing the effect.
“Ohhh! Memememememeeee!!!” A little pink filly with sea green and sky blue hair bounded up to the table. “My name's Cotton Candy and I go to school with my best friend Color Splash and I really love my teachers Cherilee and Stargazer even though Stargazer's kinda weird but my favorite color is bright red and I like swimming and I LOVE fairs and I like cotton candy because that's my name but I STILL don't have my cutie mark and I guess what I wanna know is when will I get it????”
Crystal Ball listened patiently to the pony. It was easier when they talked this much.
“Shh, quiet now, leetle one.” She layered the campy accent on thick as she peered into her ball. The swirls began to take shape as she concentrated.
“I seee... I seee... a ferris wheel...shining lights...funnel cake...a fair! Yes! You weel get your cutie mark at a fair!”
“OOOOHHHH!!! Thanks lady!” The pink filly jumped away as many other eager little faces took her place. What will I get for my birthday? Will I get a lot of candy for Nightmare Night? Will I ever be a famous singer?
As she finished telling a little yellow pegasus that her sick kitten would be fine in a week or so, something strange happened.
The ball went black.
“Wh-what is this?” In all the years she'd had her crystal ball, it had never once done this. Lightning flashed through the globe. Crystal Ball squinted her eyes and didn't look away. Six dark figures...the castle at Canterlot...ponies screaming....then, suddenly, the ball darkened again, and began shaking.
“What in Equestria...?” Before she could finish her sentence, the ball shattered, sending shards of glass all over her table. The ponies still in line looked on in fear and awe.
Quickly, she realized she must do something. She was the only one who had seen the scene in the glass, so there was no need to cause mass hysteria.
“Bahahaha! Return tomorrow for more readings, ponies! I fear you have worn this one out!”
“Aaaawwww!” The young ones were disappointed, but they slowly filed away.
Pulling the deep purple curtain over her cart, Crystal Ball pulled off her silly costume scarves and began to canter her way to the town hall. She needed to tell the Mayor!

Corn Silk
Corn Silk trotted down the street, towing her cart of corn. She planned to pop it and form caramel popcorn balls with the help of her friend Sugar Craze, but she had to haul it to Sugarcube Corner herself.
The sight of the fortune teller’s wagon brought a small smile to her face; she had often visited the fortune teller as a child, asking endless questions about her cutie mark, which had come rather late for a filly of her age, her future, but mostly about her mother. The fortune teller had successfully predicted her cutie mark’s appearance, but nothing about her mother. She had begged for more information, but the gypsy had become agitated and told her to leave. Finally she had accepted she would just never know.
A low hanging cloud hovered overhead, and she caught sight of a swishing golden tail. “Hey there cousin. Ain’t you s’possed t’be helpin’ set up the clouds fer ambiance?”
Her cousin’s normally calm face poked over the clouds, brow scrunched up.
“Somethin’ bad is coming.”

Sugar Craze Sugar Craze hated Nightmare Night. Every year there was a huge to-do, with games and candy and dancing and costumes, at least three of which were her least favorite things ever. She didn’t mind helping the Cakes prepare the food and sweets, but she stubbornly refused to go out, ever since she had inadvertently won a contest a few years ago for “Most Terrifying Mask”. This year, she hoped to sit quietly at home and practice icing cupcakes, which she had never gotten quite right.
She felt a sudden chill down her spine and tensed up, looking around her. Every once in a while she would feel that chill or get an itchy nose, and soon after something bad would happen. She sighed, returning to candy making. With Nightmare Night just around the corner, she always felt like something bad would happen. At least Corn Silk would be by soon; the sensible Earth pony always knew how to calm her down.

“Grrr...”
Red Velvet stared at himself in the mirror, admiring the terrifying expression the mask he wore bore. It was like a jack-o-lantern, but stretched in a grotesque way that looked absolutely horrifying.
It was perfect.
He crept quietly downstairs into the bakery, knowing that his parents expected him to have at least half of the orders done for tomorrow by tonight.
But, he couldn't resist having a little fun first.
Sugar Craze, who he practically considered his little sister, was sitting glumly in the shop, probably contemplating how much she hated Nightmare Night.
As carefully as he possibly could, Red Velvet snuck up behind the drakonequis, making sure she couldn't hear his hoofsteps.
Finally, when he was perfectly positioned inches away from the back of her head, he yelled...
“BOO!!!!”

Ah, Nightmare Night, a night to get candy and give some of it as an offering to Nightmare Moon, though she doesn't exist anymore. Now she is just Princess Luna, who happens to come around on Nightmare night to hang with everypony.
Silver Band was on his way back into town from giving his offering when he heard about the Gypsy’s crystal ball. It then occurred to him that he had gotten a crystal ball in a gem shipment that was too big for any accessory. He went to his shop, picked it up, and went to find the wandering gypsy to give her the ball.

Trotting quickly through the streets of Ponyville, Crystal Ball headed towards the Town Hall. She knew the mayor would be especially busy around Nightmare Night, but at least he would be available.
She saw him helping a distraught little filly who had spilled all her candy. This year, he was dressed as a pirate.
“Mayor Macintosh!” He looked up slowly from his task.
“Ee-yup?”
“There is a serious problem...” She cast her large lidded eyes down at the young pony. “Could you please let us speak alone for a moment?” After the pony had scampered off..
“Something bad is happening. I've been feeling signs lately, but just now...” The big red pony stared back at her solemnly. “My crystal ball went black, then burst. I feel like something terrible is either happening or about to happen in Canterlot...
...And I think it has to do with your wife.”

“...So, the legend is that, every Nightmare Night, NIGHTMARE MOON herself descends upon Ponyville...”
Several shocked gasps came from the crowd of ponies.
“If you don't leave candy for her....you better WATCH OUT!”
Stargazer yelled the last words, causing a few of the younger ponies to jump, followed by some nervous giggles.
“But, that is just a legend after all...Now, if you'll all follow me, we're going to head to the haunted libraryyyy.”
This was her favorite part of her annual ghost tour. She loved poking around at the library.
“Now, they say that something terrible once happened here. Long ago, it is said that this library was once home to a fearsome dragon. And if little ponies didn't turn in their books in to him on time...well, you can guess what happened!”
“AHH!” Several of the little ponies screamed, while one of their moms looked as if she was going to faint.
“And that, everypony, concludes our tour! For something not so creepy, be sure to visit Sugarcube Corner or Sweet Apple Acres for some delicious sweets!”
She sighed, leaning back against the door to the library tree as they all scampered off. If only she could get inside...
She had always had this feeling that there was just something in there waiting for her. A book, or some sort of message, that was just for her. If only there was a way in... But everything was completely boarded up.
