Mythology is cool and all, but what does it have to do with Magick, or Paganism in general?
You may be wondering what the significance of mythology is here. Well, mythology is often the foundation for everything else and is pretty important to know a little bit about, or a lot about if you're an eclectic like me. All religions are backed up by some form of mythos, all cultures have their own unique stories, and all magic can be strengthened using mythology.
Mythology will allow you to understand the origins of the symbolism you use, find new symbolism, and seek names of power and deity that best suits your needs and desires. Many pagans establish their own patron deities, so feel free to use this extensive glossary to help you search for your own. Whether chosen by specific task at hand, or to establish a regular pantheon for your needs, most of us work with deity at some point. Though I respect those who wish not to attach names, genders or images to Spirit.
Sometimes, gods and goddesses offer help in your life without you calling to them. They have something you need, but you might not realize it. It is especially important to know your symbolism and what associates with which deities in this case, your you'll never pick up on their calling cards when they're trying to literally "wave" for your attention. If you distinctly notice certain symbols or things that associate with certain deities popping up constantly in your dreams or daily lives, then I suggest looking into what the deity is trying to give to you. Your intuition or "gut feeling" will tell you what symbols are important to notice. So don't ever ignore it~!!
Despite the attempts of the Romans after the advent of Christianity to choke it out, many mythologies from many cultures are alive and thriving today. Mythology carries life lessons and thrilling stories. Whether for leisure or for practice, mythology is always great to brush up on.
Work with what personally fits you best, but I suggest to familiarize yourself with all the mythology in here. Trust me, it's really helpful in the long run!
