It was a typical autumn day; breezy and crisp with the sun hanging high overhead, with not a single cloud for it to hide behind. All in all it was pleasant enough, considering the weather of late.

Zaf had grown restless in flight, the ceaseless travel had become increasingly boring this far from civilization of any sort. Not that she held any love for the majority of humanity -they had their entertaining moments- but usually where humans lived there were always other kage lurking in the shadows. Her kind were far more interesting; whether it be conversation, company, or at the very least a good meal.

Banking hard to the side she swooped down, crashing through the treetops without much ado. At first it appeared as if she landed in the middle of nowhere but a few moment of walking and she broke the treeline that gave way to a small piece of paradise. The clearing contained a large lake, fed by a waterfall at one end and emptied by a stream farther down. She made her way to the base of the waterfall and claimed one of the large flat rocks in the shallow water for herself, not that there was anyone else around. She stretched out, wings and all to catch the sun's rays, and took to skipping stones across the lake's surface with her magic.

It wasn't particularly enlightening, but for now it was better than the endless skies that awaited her.

With a screech Rook leapt, diving face-first into the water before her. Her jaws snapped back and forth, desperately seeking her prey. Hers. The hunger in the pit of her stomach drove her further through the water, body shivering as her temperature dropped. Her claws scraped through the sediment resting at the bottom, flinging silt and mud onto the bank.

With a crunch her maw closed in with a sickening crack, teeth piercing scales of her prize. Raising her body from the water she shook her coat vigorously before trotting to a sunny, grassy spot. Crunching through bones the kage tore the best meaty parts out first, barely filling her hunger. How delicious. How unsatisfying. Fish did not fill her desperate need for red, raw, dripping meat, and the scraps that she pulled from human trash didn't do the job either. As she began gnawing the last bits from the bones her eyes followed the bright shape of another sailing down from above.

A low growl sounded in the back of her throat and she hastily scarfed down the remaining pieces of her meal. Her meal. Not anyone else's. She rolled out in the grass, desperately trying to dry her coat. As she rose to her feet and began to creep closer, thin wisps of smoke trailed from her body once more.

The commotion had ended well before she herself had made her way into the clearing, and as such she was unaware of the danger presently lurking in her direction. It was only by luck that she was saved.

She'd run out of stones and shifted in her spot to look for more, it was only then that she caught a glimpse of the creeping hellborne out of the corner of her eye. She looked surprised for a moment, yet completely at ease with the situation all the same.

She'd dealt with hellions before, and they had been quite unpleasant experiences. Feral little things, with more spines and sharp angles to make a porcupine green with envy, yet lacking the intelligence to string together a simple sentence. However....there was something different about this one, evident at only a simple glance. Maybe it was the spikes, maybe it was the size, or simply the way she carried herself.

Or it could've been the wisps of smoke trailing behind her.

Yeah, that was it.

Even with her interest piqued and the danger nearing, she remained where she was. She tucked her wings and tail in a bit, but ultimately remained sprawled out gracefully over her rock. She liked her spot, and that was reason enough for one such as her to remain.

The next rock she found however would not find it's resting place at the bottom of the lake. No, this one instead was sent whizzing in Rook's direction with enough force to hurt, but without much care to it's trajectory. No matter the outcome, she sent a smug grin in the direction of the other female and waited for any sort of reaction.

Maybe today wouldn't be so boring after all.

If the temporal had actually sensed her approach, Rook didn't know. Her belly almost scraped the ground as she moved through the tall grass. She wanted to get closer to this one. With her next step forward a rabbit fled from the grass, and her belly rumbled again. She gazed hungrily after it, but her massive curiosity for the other kage finally won out and she continued to move forward.

It was too late before she heard the telltale whistling of an object sailing her way. With a slight zing it clipped one of her ears, and she let out an agonized yowl. She dropped to her side and pawed at it. It stung, it hurt. Rook didn't know hurt. The animals she hunted were too weak to fight back, and every kage she had stalked had only fled in terror. White eyes rolled back as she scrambled back to her feet, a low hiss beginning to escape from her maw. More quickly now she wove through the grass, talons digging into the soft loam beneath.

Rook did not like her. She could barely fathom how the stone had come her way but the kage remained nearly motionless. Magics? The only magic she had seen had come from humans, and it usually meant she had come too close to a village for their liking. There was no village here, only forest and mountain. The presence of magic confused her, and only fueled her blind anger.

Her head finally broke through the grass. Looking balefully at the other female she growled, crouching down low to the ground. She had no words yet to share. Instead she waited for the other to speak. As she lay in wait smoke collected about her, floating out over the surface of the water. She breathed it in, unfazed, claws tightening into the soil.

She didn't even have to see the damage, the resulting yowl was satisfying enough and her grin widened and turned sharp, a scant imitation of the usually pleasant gesture. This would prove most interesting. She kept her attention on the other kage, even as her form wove in and out of the tall grasses, the telltale wisps of smoke were all she needed to know her general direction. Still she waited for the other to approach her, preferably in the open. It was a matter of pride for her, after all.

In the meantime she collected a few more stones and spun them in the air. It was entertainment, a way to busy her mind, a way to hone her focus, and a lingering threat all in one. Efficient and effective.

"Enough of that," she chided loud enough for the other female to hear once she'd poked her head out of the brush. "Skulking about in the shadows, crawling with your belly to the ground like some lowly snake. Such things are below us, dear sister." She sat up straighter and ruffled her wings back in place. "Come here and let us speak like the civilized beings we are, or play in the dirt like some animal."

"But let it be known if you chose to act like some animal, I will treat you accordingly."
To further her point the rocks she'd been spinning stopped, and simply floated ominously where they were. A looming promise of what was to come, should that be the path the other kage chose.
