The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - Discussion Thread

ALERT: FATAL GAME-BREAKING GLITCH FOUND IN SKYWARD SWORD. Essentially what happens is that if you glitch the file and save, you make it impossible to progress any further in the story, the result being you'd have to start over or play an earlier save file. (so if you do glitch it, DON'T SAVE!) To learn about what triggers it and how to avoid it, please check this page (cited with direct instructions from Nintendo)here (in the interest of preventing spoilers and confusion we are simply directing you to an authentic source).

***THIS GLITCH OCCURS LATE IN THE GAME SO BE CAREFUL!

UPDATE: Nintendo has released a repair patch and there seems to be multiple ways to get it whether your Wii gets Internet or not. Currently there is a free "fix-it" Channel in the Wii Shop that can fix a broken save file. Check out this page of IGN's Skyward Sword Wiki for full details.

Here's an article directly from Nintendo's troubleshooting center addressing the issue and offering instructions on solving it. The glitch can only be triggered at a very specific point in the game, so if you never encountered it or moved past it in the story there is no need to download the patch channel.

this sucks, I was kinda close to nearly killing my file actually....easily avoided though, no need to be too alarmed! xD

Skyward Sword is finally out!!! The game we've waited 5 years for is here! Share your gameplay, etc experiences and thoughts in this thread!

The general consensus from most major gaming news and review publications is that Skyward Sword is Nintendo's Wii masterpiece, with almost flawless and very effective controls enhanced by MotionPlus technology, featuring beautiful graphics that suit the gameplay very appropriately and an orchestrated soundtrack to boot. Not to mention the incredible LoZ origin story we've all been waiting for. IGN even claims that "Ocarina of Time has met its match" in Skyward Sword. Big words, do you agree?
IGN said the same thing about Twilight Princess...

So I haven't gotten very far yet as my brother and I got it this afternoon and are switching off turns. I have gotten my tunic and am about to enter the "surface" world. Here are some of my first thoughts:

- The visuals are stunning. This Zelda's world is vibrant and full of color, and despite the return of cell-shaded graphics, I believe that they only enhance the beautiful impressionistic stylization that to me matches the atmosphere and energy of the game quite well.

- The controls have been redefined and for the better. Yes, they're a pain sometimes and take getting used to; but I believe this is a very good thing. If every LoZ installment played with the same old comfortable controls that we're all used to then it would be boring (the old controls were already getting a bit redundant imo anyway...). Twilight Princess barely scratched the surface of what Skyward Sword has unleashed with the Wii's capacity for motion controls. I will say that learning how to fly and stay in control of the loftwings was especially tedious at first, but once I got the hang of it I found it immensely satisfying. Swordplay is a lot of fun, at least so far; you really have to think about what you're doing with your sword and shield in combat because you're literally controlling all of Link's movements. It adds a phenomally interactive element to gameplay. I'm sure it will get even more complicated as we move along.

EDIT: now that I've gotten much farther along I can say with even greater certainty that the gameplay controls are allowing me the most fun and interactive experience I've ever had playing a Zelda game. I wholeheartedly agree that once you've played Zelda this way, you're never going to want to go back. I played through my old TP wii file the other night for comparison, and while I still of course love that game, I was amazed at all of the differences I experienced. And many of them are so subtle. Nintendo's Zelda team obviously put an incredible amount of work, thought and experimentation into this new style of LoZ and how it could best utilize the Wii's capabilities.

- I'm enjoying the increased characterization of the characters, including Link. He, Zelda, and the NPCs of Skyloft all have immense backgrounds and highly developed personalities. Though Link still does not have a voice, he appears to engage in conversation with gestures and body language that indicate he is speaking (we saw this in TP as well, but it's even more apparent here in SS). He has many more realistically human attributes, such as stamina. Link actually gets tired after performing feats of extreme strength or agility, etc. No longer is Link the mindless puppet who responded to whatever command the controls give him without so much as having to stop for a breather. Now we have to remember that Link is a human with human weaknesses, and cannot run fast forever or hang off a ledge for seemingly infinite amounts of time. You can also prompt Link to sit in chairs (and, LOL, on toilets, which flush after he gets up!!!! XDDDD), open closet doors, etc, all of which add a very lifelike atmosphere to the game that we can all relate to. Also *pretty sure Zelda and Link have a thing for each other, the both of them are super adorable and Nintendo really teases us in how that aspect is played off. Link/Zelda shippers are going to love it XD

Those are some of my first thoughts. Feel free to share yours!!!! The Zelda game we've waited five years for is here at last!

In my opinion Skyward Sword was an awesome game I'm glad that it won some awards I did cast my votes for it. XD As the captain stated before about the controls and visuals I agree with her. 3nodding

For the storyline it's an awesome one from beginning to end. (Spoiler Warning)
I had my suspicions about the Old woman at the sealed grounds being Impa an I knew she was Impa after opening the Gate of Time at the Sealed Grounds and using Fi to gather information about her which said "she appears to be very old"

I really love the game, I've only played the first part only...I really wish I owned the whole thing though. Sigh...But I love the animation and the game flow...it moves so smoothly I almost thought it wasn't a game for a while there.
