Whooosh

A steam of piping hot smoke erupted from a green tinted geiser near a scruffy looking hyena female. This hyena was none other than Mafa, the leader of these lands. She had sought out this place for a bit of time to herself, a bit of time to think, to go over things in her head. She had been rather stressed lately, keeping the filthy lions out, a task she was quite sick of, she wished they'd just move on, or better yet, drop dead. A malicious smile came to the hyena's saliva covered mouth as she thought of this. A yard of dead lions, what a glorious sight it would be.

With a sigh, the female lowered her head and went back to gnawing on a hard bone that lay beneath her paws. As her yellow teeth worked over the calcified item, she mulled over thoughts in her head. Memories drifted in and out of her brain. She was sifting through them, trying to forget the ones that troubled her. If she was going to live here, control these lands, she'd have to rid herself of all feeling, a process on which she had started when she was just a juvinile.

With a blink of her cold eyes, the female stood, bone still in her mouth, and trotted to a geiser that was sure to explode in a fury of steam any second. Without hesitating, the female dropped the bone she had been working on and turned, the geiser steaming behind her back. Mafa emerged from the cavern slowly, icy eyes surveying her home.

A hint of color meandered it's way through the grim, monotone colored graveyard. Brown was the dominate, overall hue, with bits and splashes of black and white etching across the males figure. A lion of course, was this males species.. and quite frankly he hadn't really met anything yet that was different than he.

Since birth the graveyards have been this particular males home, along with the clan of lions and assorted other animals, none of which he'd previously met. He'd learned to be careful of his surroundings, although his tauntings of his older brother, Toshi, had rather fixed that, making him a wrecklace, at times careless, sort of juvenile. With some luck that disadvantage would redeem itself over time. The probability of this however was not on the best outlook, though.

As usual, Runai found himself pacing the graveyard, near the center, either trying to catch a glimpse of a hyena or attempt to find his sibling amongst the empty, broken carcasses and cold, dry grey rocks. This often led him to the typical spot that he and Toshi hung around, where there were several geisers, each glowing green in color. Perhaps it was unwise to trek into such iffy territory, knowing in the back of his head that he really should never venture in this far because of the hyenas.

But then again.. for all he knew there was only one hyena, whom he'd ran into as a younger cub. She'd let him go then.. why wouldn't she now..? Either which way, his curiousity had always led him to this point, finding that the irritating bit of curiousity in his mind always egged him to go on.. to move even closer towards the heart of these lands.. to find out what was hidden amonst the cliffs and bones. There had to be more..

Unfortunately for him, he hadn't taken any notice of the grey colored hyena, lurking rather close nearby. She blended with the scenery.. and, despite living here for most of his life, had not realized that he really should be keeping a better eye out. If he were actually paying attention, perhaps he would have even noticed the faint, sticky scent of a hyena being tossled about in the air. But no. Runai's mind was aloof and thinking more on the secrets inside the graveyard, rather than trying to keep track of some stupid hyena wandering around.

"Myeh.. when I find Toshi I'm gonna kill him," He finally spoke, again eyeing up the surroundings. "Wandering around without telling anyone where he's going.. mum and dad'll have a fit.. ah well.." he continued, voice distant and hazy, as if speaking for the mere sake of it. A dead give-a-way to his position in the graveyard.

After emerging from the cavern of geisers, Mafa had stood at the entrance to the area briefly, those frozen aqua eyes of hers panning the land. Once she had had her fill of observing, she turned to move on back to the very center of the Graveyard, back to little Rasuli, the young pup that she was growing so increasingly fond of, not that she'd admit to it outside of her thoughts. The less her pack knew about how she felt, the better.

But it was then that Mafa's big ears perked to a peculiar sound, a sound that sliced through the dead silence of the Graveyard like a sharp set of claws. A murmur, but not that faint, and this mumble brought the scent of a lion with it. Mafa's left eye twitched lightly. It didn't smell like a lion that was just passing by, no, this one lived here. It was one of the Graveyard lions, the most hated breed of all to Mafa. One of Ausha's spies she supposed.

With a low growl, Mafa moved from where she had been standing, her ugly head hung down low in a very threatening posture. She didn't pursue the lions on the outer rim of her home as of yet, but when they stepped into her land she got even madder than usual. Why these insolent creatures couldn't keep their borders straight was beyond her, her hyenas certainly kept to their side. She'd prove a point to those disgusting felines, to leave the Graveyard, even if it took her killing off a few of their despicable offspring to show she was serious.

Between the geisers and his mumbling, Runai hadn't really taken notice of Mafa at first. In fact it took several moments to even register the fact that someone else was nearing, oh rather quickly indeed..

At some point or another, the paint colored males eyes had led him in the direction of the pursueing hyena, and an instant thought was placed in his head. "Oh! Hey Toshi!" He called, taking a solumn step towards the female. Upon a second or so of staring, the lion quickly took notice that this was in fact /not/ his brother and rather.. something that looked not so.. friendly.. "Er.. how awkward.." He began, taking a silent few steps backwards. "Sorry about that.. uhm.. thought you were my brother.. I like to trail him from time to time to make sure he doesn't get into any trouble, being the dim-wit he is.." He explained, quirking his head while his steps continued to take him backwards with every few steps Mafa took forwards.

No. She didn't look friendly at all.. pity.. but.. the question was more of.. if he should run or if he shouldn't.. half and half was pulling him this way and that mentally. He'd always wanted to meet a hyena formally.. sort of.. all his life he'd been told what nasty, relentless, evil creatures they were. Quite frankly he wanted to see for himself. A stupid idea, of course, but he hadn't recognized that.

"Hey! You're that one thing I met a while ago!" He grinned, curiousity getting the best of him at this point. Yes.. that one hyena.. that left before he got really the chance to have any sort of reaction. Unfortunately he couldn't tell by her positioning and facial expression that she probably wasn't up for a little chat with a invading juvenile who came from a royal family that had taken up living in what she thought to be /her/ lands.

As the lion called out to her Mafa stopped in her tracks. Her blank eyes narrowed on the beastie, she recognized him. He and another had come around her a few months before, when she had been quite younger, but still on top of things. What idiotic creatures, hadn't learned to stay away. Immediately, Mafa rose her jowls in a threatening snarl, her head rising up alittle along with her tail to assert her high position.

The creature had a memory, yes, it too remembered her, but it wouldn't for long. For some reason, it hadn't run like it had last time, it stood before her, talking to her like she cared, a tone that assured her that this lion was rather full of himself. Disgusting.

"Indeed I am you filthy rat. What brings you here, did you hear I was hungry? Or did that ridiculous brat send you here to your death?"

Her tone was life-less, not even a sneer of anger was held in it this time, it was monotonous and bland, she was dealing with a dim witted creature, there was no need to raise her voice just yet. She didn't know he was of the royal family, she didn't suspect that a assembly of lions would have more than one ruling body. If she had known, it would've given her more room to mock these lions living here, they couldn't even survive under the rule of that Ausha, they needed back up. Pitiful indeed.

Rune had stopped backing up by now, a frown plastered across his muzzle. "Filthy rat..? I think you might have me mistaken for something else.. probably fat, black, and with a gross, dark tail," He added, quirking a brow. Actually the description could also be used to describe this hyena, however her would leave this out of the conversation for now.

"And I'm looking for my brother. He likes to wander off, the moron," He stated lightly, tail sweeping behind his figure, tip occasionally bumping and tugging at the gravel behind his figure. "I'm not interested if you're hungry or not.. go find a bone.. or a mouse or something.. have you seen a black and white lion around..? 'Round my size.. little smaller." He explained. Nope. She didn't seem very friendly. Best press for the information he needed and then leave..? If he could.

Mafa chuckled in amusement at the first part of this young lion's comment,

"Fat, black, gross tail, sounds much like the beast that gave birth to you and the rest of your brood if I'm not mistaken"

Mafa paced lightly, her light paws barely making prints in the thick dust. She watched these lions constantly, just to make sure they kept to their own, she knew well what they looked like.

So the rat had caught her bluff, she wan't particularly hungry, but perhaps she could toy with him for now before ending his life.

"White and black. I do believe I caught him lurking around my home earlier. I took care of him, I can promise you this, lion"

Mafa tosses her head, clearing a bit of her scruffy black fur from her eyes. Truthfully, she hadn't seen any other lions around here in a long time, she had almost forgotten of them, but alas, the problem was still apparant.

"You'd better watch you're mouth.. that's my mum you're going on about.." Rune grumbled, brows furrowing rather quickly, his more.. attitude oriented personality making waves.

If he were smart he'd make a mad dash for home now.. however this was Rune. He wanted to see what all the others always went on about and why they said these creatures were so nasty.

However these thoughts were sudden pushed from his mind, Mafa's next statement. Finally! Some information about.. his.. brother..? With an instant spark, Rune's eyes shifted to a glare, the fur on his back and neck prickling upward. "So you've seen Toshi around..? You better not have hurt him.. or.. or.. or I'll.. I'll think think of something!" He spat. Yes.. not a very intimidating character, was he..

Unfortunately it had never occured that she may be merely bluffing to get under his skin. But no matter what her intentions, it was working.

"Pah, like she deserves her life, your kind obviously believed that my mother didn't deserve he--"

In mid sentence, Mafa spat out the rest of her words onto the dry ground. She was trying to forget her past, not bring it up in an encounter with a disgusting lion. He didn't care about what she had suffered in the past, no one did, even Mafa herself was starting not to care. Seemingly, Mafa's words had ruffled this young animals' feathers. Beautiful, Mafa couldn't have hoped for a better reaction.

"What, and you'll attack me? Please, I'd tear through you faster than you'd have time to think about it, just ask Ausha, your little king, ever wonder why he limps?"

To prove her point, Mafa's snarl widened, almost as if it was a forced smile, one to show off her deadly teeth. Out of all her accomplishments, wounding that lion had been Mafa's best, or so she thought. She had made him her arch enemy, and she was never going to forget that.

"You bet I will! You better not've hurt him or you'll be sorry!" Rune yapped, curling his own lips into a half sort of snarl. It wasn't much to be proud of.. a mouth of pathetic, itty bitty lion teeth.

No. He wasn't one to even begin to bear a threat to Mafa.

"Psh. I havn't seen or met Ausha enough to care about his stupid limp. He's not even the king, my dad is," he continued, eyeing up Mafa carefully.

But ooh.. such a distraction.. that cave back there.. He couldn't help but stare. Make a break for it..? Maybe he could hide until this hyena was gone.. and then explore. Oooh what he wouldn't give to see the inside of the heart of the land on which he lived..

He was always forbidden even cross the line between the hyena and lino territory.. so naturally the center of these lands were even more forbidden. Especially since the hyenas took up fort there.

Mafa rolled her eyes, turning her head to follow the lion's eye sight to the cavern she had just emerged from. She didn't feel threatened at all by this youth, he could be sneaking up for an attack right behind her turned eyes and she wouldn't have cared. She could dispose of him easily. With her head still turned, Mafa spoke, no emotion in her voice,

"Don't flatter yourself lion, what I did to him he deserved, deserved for trespassing"

Or she should do to this one for trespassing, these young lions sure had nerve, and she hated it. Rune's comment on Ausha snapped her freezing gaze back to the lion, this time, she spoke with acid in her tone,

"What? There are two kings of your pitiful pride?" How had she missed this? "That makes your lot...." Prince. How delicious.

Mafa gave a wide, evil looking grin. Oh how his death would hurt the pride. Mafa's eyes widened as these wonderful thoughts poured into her sadistic head. The alpha licked her chops thoughtfully, eyes concentrating on the brown and white animal before her.

"Oh yea! And I could bet anything that if my dad finds out that you hurt Toshi.. He could get you easy. Especially if he brings a bunch of other lions to help," He snerked, a sly, wry sort of grin making it's way across his muzzle. Did he actually think that he was scaring this hyena..?

"So.. you'd better show me where he is.." He began, although again taking aquick glimpse back towards that cave, a slow, caution step finding it's way towards the opening-- towards Mafa.

"And wipe that grin off your face. It's stupid looking," He added, obviously under the wrong impression that he'd scared Mafa into doing what he'd like her to do. Oh how very wrong he was..

Again a few more steps were taken towards the caverns entrence, sidestepping a bit to avoid this hyena's teeth. He'd rather not get caught in those.. any lion knew to keep away from sharp objects, especially teeth.

Mafa scoffed, like she was scared of some lion. Sure they got big, but a band of hyenas could take down a pride of lions with out even trying. And a big band of hyenas she did have. Sure she didn't know if they'd even want to hurt a lion, but they would, she'd force them to, and if they didn't obey, they'd face her wrath.

"Show you where he is? Why I can't do that, I quite rightly don't know. Perhaps one of my others dragged that corpse off some where else"

Her grin only widened as she spoke, a forced grin though, just to spite the lion. She wasn't blind to his advanced though, he was getting closer to the cavern, what the hell did he want from it? Without thinking, Mafa growled lowly, but audiably, fair warning, right?
PostPosted: Fri Feb 17, 2006 10:28 pm

"Shut up! I KNOW you know where he is!," the paint snapped, shifting his weight with irritatation. "Fine! If you won't show me then I'll go find him myself!" Rune yapped, sending another glare in Mafa's direction before suddenly dashing, completely ignoring her warning growl, her teeth, and, with some luck, some time it'd take for her to catch im.

The fact that she would was almost inevidable.. she was larger.. quicker.. and probably far more driven tahn Rune would ever be.

At the very least he could find Toshi.. Hopefully..

Again, little did he know of the little bluff Mafa had told agbout his sibling.. when in fact she hadn't seen him or any other lion at all around the area. It didn't matter to Rune at the moment, however. His eyes were focused on the cavern as he sped.

'I just have to make it.. ' His mind whispered silently in the back of his head, the fur still standing on end on his back and neck, making him look fluffier.. but also larger. Not that it would help him much if Mafa caught up. Eyes began searching for a crack or crevice that he could dash for.. assuming that that hot-headed hyena would soon be on his tail.

Mafa lifted her head in an overly arrogant fashion. She reached up with a paw, elegantly pointing it towards herself, her words were bitter and cruel,

"Of course I know where he is, I had him for lunch, he was--"

But before she could finish her words of extreme wisdom, the brown and white form of a slimey lion cub was darting past her. Oh no, not on her watch he didn't. To Mafa, this was all happening in slow motion, it was a hunt, but not for some prey beast this time, no, her target was this little lion. The alpha female let out a characteristic cackle as she swiftly whipped her whole body around, cold eyes watching him run as her muscles tensed. She was suprisingly swift for the way she look and with the help from the pack, she was well fed and full of energy.

With a burst of speed, Mafa tore off after the lion, claws digging into the hard soil to propel herself forward. This was all just a game, and it would end with a prize catch for her. It wasn't long before she was close to him; she could almost feel the tip of his long tail tickling her nose. The hyena pushed herself harder, lean body straining to bring herself closer. And when she felt she was close enough, those jaws of hers opened and she threw herself in the lion's direction, hoping to hurt him quite a bit.
