...But I could use some tips.
Like how to make some clothing or buy it.
Also how to convince my mom to let me. I told her I wanted to try it and she gave me the "you're-insane" look. neutral

I find most of my pieces (well, mainly stuff I necro into scrap material) from thrift stores, flea markets and the occassional yard sale. As far as your mom goes, well.. if that is an issue, perhaps you should slowly work different pieces into your daily routine. Jewelry is generally the easiest to start with, since most pieces associated with steampunk aren't really THAT odd to see on your typical average stranger.

But I guess it really does depend on what sort of attire your really looking for.. which boils down to the ultimate question: what is steampunk to you? A question made even easier, when you think steampunk, what do you envision? How do you see yourself? Hey! You gotta start somewhere.

I go to thrift stores and yard sales enough to find things. I'll look harder next time I go. I'll have to try the jewelry thing soon and see how she reacts.

When I think of steampunk, I think of sorta Victorian era or somewhat post-apocalyptic with the usual steampunk things, I guess. And for some odd reason trains. It could be because I like trains and I love the uniforms. Sucky explanation but it was the best I could come up with right now.
I also love military style. I found this awesome military/steampunk dress on Etsy today.

A good way to look is not to look at the items for what they are, but what they can be/become. I know before I started modifying Nerf Guns, I use to take broken hair driers and the occasional fancy looking brass candle stick holder and make rather trippy looking guns out of them. The same can be applied to pretty much anything and everything. Oh, and while gears can be a bit cliche, they do work. I occasionally buy a few of these and shave them down to bar tin metal or repaint them, might be a nice starting point since they are cheap:

I lean more towards Military style as well, though perhaps a mixture of colonial-meets-civil war sort of thing. I purposely avoid top hats (no offense to anyone who actually wears them), Haha. Anyways, linkage puh-leeze? biggrin

I'll try that. It might help a lot. I'm going to try to buy/make some jewelry and wear it around to see how people react.

I've always loved military. Civil war style uniforms seem to match better with steampunk.
It's a dress but if you search Military Steampunk on Etsy you might get a lot.
Here's the link to the dress.

Agreed to an extent. But you have to admit, there is something a bit more prestigious about the 18th century military uniforms, whatnot of war being a "sport of gentleman" and all. Though I probably should have said "Napoleonic", more so than "Colonial".

Though 18th century military uniforms are more prestigious I still think more Colonial than Napoleonic but that's just me.

I agree with the suggestions from Kyrenx. After a while of repurposing thrift store finds, you figure out how to do it on your own. I especially agree with the looking a the item as what it could become as opposed to what it is. I've seen some really cool stuff made from candle holders, soda bottles, etc.

The main thing is to have fun with it! Also, I would suggest antique stores if you have any around you that are kind of like a junk shop-ish looking place or at least have good prices. You can find some really awesome stuff that way!

Good luck and feel free to ask for help!

A friend of mine once had this idea of using an old marching band uniform as a base. What with the shako, and the resemblance to an old Napoleonic-style to it, he figured with a few modifications, then he could get it to work. What do you think?

It's a good idea if you can find one for cheap. At least I've been unable to find any, though I'd imagine " Marching Band" stitching would be a pain to remove/cover up.

Yes, that would be hard to remove, although the ones at my college just have a patch that can be removed, so it would be easier to modify. Plus, they're gonna be replacing the uniforms soon, so I'm gonna see if I can keep mine!

Hmmm... I wish I could get my hands on an old marching band uniform, I'd never thought of that before!

Can I ask what to look for in stores?
I know basics like corsets (family would kill me if I tried to wear one though), leather gloves, and goggles (Abney Park's market site sells them as well).
Antique shops should be easy. The nearest town has a 50's-60's and cowboy era feel to it so finding a shop like that. Also I go into town enough and my aunt takes me out enough if I ask she might take me to an antique shop.

For the thrift stores, I tend to look for shirts, vests, pants, skirts, or jewelry/watches/clocks that would either work or make a great base (or something great to take apart for supplies ^_^). It's also not a bad place to look for boots. I've also noticed a lovely influx of Steampunk pendants and such in the beading department in most craft stores.

It also depends on what "version" of Steampunk you want to go for (post apocalyptic, Victorian, etc.) when it comes to what to look for.
