Mononoke (モノノ怪?) is a Japanese animated television series produced by Toei Animation. A spin-off of 2006's horror anthology series Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, Mononoke follows the character of the medicine seller as he continues to face myriad supernatural perils. Mononoke takes place during the Edo Period Japan with the four class system, Samurai being the highest class and merchants (such as the medicine seller himself) being in the lowest class. Only Samurai were permitted to carry swords, which is why it comes as a shock to many of the characters that the medicine seller would be carrying a sword. Mononoke follows a wandering, nameless character known only as the "Medicine Seller" (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai). The series is made up of individual chapters in which the medicine seller encounters, combats and subsequently destroys various mononoke. The "mononoke" are a type of ayakashi, unnatural spirits that linger in the human world. The Medicine Seller always proceeds in the same manner, using his knowledge of the supernatural to fend off the mononoke until he can learn the spirit's shape (Katachi), truth (Makoto) and reasoning (Kotowari). Only then can he unsheathe his sword and exorcise the demon.

A manga adaption of the original Bakeneko arc was published in Young Gan Gan Comics September 12, 2007.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.I simply love this anime, and I really need to read the manga! I stumbled onto this anime thanks to a roommate in college showing it to me. The art style is very different and I enjoyed the way the stories were told. The 'Medicine Seller's' subtle sarcasm is very enjoyable and the way he exorcises the demons I thought was creative. I was wondering how many of you have seen or even heard of this fantastic series, if you haven't I suggests you look it up! You can watch it free at animetoplist.org.

this picture is hilarious and I thought if anyone who saw the show saw it they could appreciate the attitude of the 'Medicine Seller' especially in his appearance at the incense game.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.I would have to say that the Nue episode would have to be my favorite because of the surprise ending. Not to give anything away but the Nue is a spirit that will appears to be something different to everyone who sees it and it factors into the story in a major and very interesting way. This story is an an exercise in knowing that everyone lies and the trick is to find out what it is that they are lying about, which is not always as easy as you think.

The mononoke in the Noh mask is sooo adorable and spastic. He just wants to rescue poor Ochou from her horrid family, and her mom who married her off to a rich family and considered her no more than a pawn in her game to raise her own status. I will say this episode is definatly far from the most disturbing I think the first Bake Neko from Ayakashi takes that dubious prize. It is still very sad, especially knowing that daughter being just nothing more than a brood mare to be married off in exchange for good was the normal thing to do in almost all cultures throughout history. Still you have to love the medicine seller

Well it looks like at least one person agrees with me that the first episode is the best. I certainly will not argue that it is not disturbing, I agree it is the most disturbing. However it is the first episode I watched and led me to find the rest of this little gem. It is a story about retribution falling on a house some got what they deserved others were caught in the crossfire, and pay for the mistakes of their family. I would say if you want to watch this story you just need to start here, especially since the Umibōzu episode calls back to it.

Yes, the first Bake Neko is a great episode and I would say it is always best to start from the beginning. Although I will say the last episode really is not anything that special in my humble opinion, I would have loved to see more of this anime and wish Toei animation would do something more with it, but I think I have a better chance of seeing the winter Olympics in hell. I agree Nue is a fun episode and confusing and I just found Noppera-bō to defiantly be the most fun episode of them all.

I took your advice and checked this anime out like you suggested. However I just could not get into it, it was way too weird the art style was just too off what I like.

So, only five people including myself have seen this great anime? One of them does not even like it, that's so sad. This is a little gem, and worth watching there aren't many episodes so you could get through it quickly. I would give one little piece of advice watch it subbed not dubbed, the original voices are great and what I have found for dubbing is just tragic.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.I thought this was a great anime. Sure the art style was different from most other animes, but that is one of the things that made it so eye catching. The way the stories were presented from each character's point of view I also thought made it interesting. The mystery of who or what the medicine seller really is made you keep watching. Hoping for more clues about his identity. I know this is a very short anime, but I thought at least a few more people would of heard of it. emotion_0A0

The other anime that is a 'love of my life' to me... The art style kind of reminded me of Gakutsuou and I loved that...I liked the patterns a lot. Mononoke was amazing! I watched the end of the Japanese Classic Horror and I watched Mononoke after. I really like Kusuriuri (Medicine Seller) and his travels. I might read the manga someday too XP! And believe me...I've watched it and I love it <3!

Yeah it is great it is really a shame it was so short. It seems like the crappier the anime the longer it runs and the better the anime the shorter it runs. emotion_donotwant

Yesh! I was kind of tied between Bakeneko episode (at the end of Japanese Classic Horror) or the Nue one o.o! That was neat o.o! All of them are good to me though XD!
