Mmm...soooo...yeah, I've played DA:O several times on the PC and I love, love, love it so much it hurts.

Since summer though, I can count on 1 hand all the times I've gotten to sit down at my main computer (it's bad enough that a few days ago I actually could NOT remember how to log into the thing.)

Over the course of the first part of the insurance stuff we ended up getting an XBox (replaces one of my vintage consoles that got destroyed.) H wanted Dragon Age II for either that or the PS3 and after doing some shopping and some weighing I got it for the former since we have like 1 other game for the XBox that didn't come with it. And I got Origins as well since save files from that can be used to shape II. (And II sucks a lot. I've never played it and I'm painfully aware of that fact.)

That said, I've been playing Origins (be-cause I luff it more than cake) and having a hell of a time. For one thing, there's a lot of damn buttons that do a lot of things that don't make a lot of sense. On the pc you hit / to change weapon sets. On the console you hit the left trigger (pauses the action), rotate the left analog stick to the appropriate spot, click A which unpauses the action and takes you back to the main game screen. And if you want to change sets on multiple characters you have to repeat this process over and over. Granted, you can also enter your inventory (again involving triggers + 3 buttons but I'm not sure if that pauses the game.)

On the PC version you can cycle through your people in the inventory screen and have them all take potions at once. You can't take potions at all from your inventory on XBox. It MUST be done through the radial menu...and lots of buttons. Or pause, cycle and q-heal them one by one but they always take the strongest potions first...so if you're like me and like to save the strongest ones for emergencies you're stuck with the radial menu.

On PC it's pretty much a 1 click process to make your people hold position or go chasing after monsters. XBox involves another radial menu nightmare. On the former even when holding your people would go "a few steps" if necessary to stay in melee, they just wouldn't chase enemies. On Xbox you have to click "hold/move" on and off to get them to behave.

It also seems as though some of the juicier action has been dumbed down. I did Redcliff over the last couple of nights and where on the PC undead will come at you in 4-5 waves on the hill and 3-4 waves in the valley on the XBox they all come rushing at you at once in smaller numbers (goodbye very important XP and almost any hope of getting through it with no ally casualties.) However, "boss" enemies (yellow specifically) are now leagues ahead of you in terms of what spells are available to them. At 13-14th level you really shouldn't have to worry about getting Crushing Prison cast on YOU. =(

There's other annoying little stuff. I'm barely into the thing in truth so I'm sure lots more awaits discovery. But I really started this topic just to say this:

On the PC you do the Circle Tower and get into the Fade and it's the Fade...weird-looking, insane navigation, nasty....but you make it through. It even manages to be fun sometimes.

On the XBox...the Fade. Is. Blurry. The whole freaking screen except for dialogue options. As though near-sighted me has taken her glasses off to play or that there's a medium-heavy fog in the room. Like if the image was clear we might forget we're in their version of a dream-world.

The Fade is freakin' long!! gonk I've thus far only done Weisshaupt and the first conversation with Niall but it is BLURRY!! gonk If the whole thing is like that I'm going to have to play in 10 minute spurts or risk having to yark.

Yeeeaaaah. So the bottomline is if any of you have Dragon Age for the PC and were considering getting it for the console XBox is not the way to go...though I doubt any other console is any different in these terms. Well, actually the PS3 controller is a little different but still...you have been warned, my dears. If I had gotten this thing for the console first I never would've finished it and would've missed out on so many wonderful things.

Yeeeeeeah there are ALWAYS such differences in controls between the PC and console. I kinda wish I would have played Morrowind on the PC instead of the Xbox. But I can't really complain too much because it got me into the Elder Scrolls games and now there are my favorite.

I guess I got spoiled by Divinity II. When I played the demo on PC it was...well, a bigger nightmare than Origins on the XBox. But when we got the XB it was the only game I was remotely interested in for it so he grabbed it for me. I was really skeptical about the transition but on a console it plays like a dream.

I guess it's my bad for in the past always playing either PC or console games, never anything cross-platform.

I never could get into Oblivion. sweatdrop And H is pestering me to get Skyrim for him.

I am SO excited for Skyrim. But I HATE how you have to have a Steam account for it. Steam hates me and my computers. scream

See, dan and I are both more likely to play games on the xbox than the pc.
a) because my mac won't run a lot of them (damn it guys please make me something to play. It'll run it I promise)
b) because his pc was old and rubbish and died every three minutes. So no pc games for him.

That said, we've never had problems with the controls. And I've got him skyrim and Saints Row three this year. Now you see, I got excited because saints row is multiplayer this time around and I thought I'd FINALLY get a chance to play something with him (he doesn't like racers, I don't like fps and there's not a lot else you can play on the xbox multiplayer) Then they RUINED it. You can only play multiplayer over two systems. I'm not buying a whole other xbox...so annoyed now.

You have to activate the game to play it and for that you need Steam and an internet connection. Its on the box in fine print. neutral gonk

That's stupid that the multiplayer is only if there are two systems available. Do you need Xbox Live to play the multiplayer?

That's a hell of a racket right there = two systems. YIKES!

Mich>And so's that. XD Thank-you, dear. 'Course now he can't remember what he disliked about the idea of Steam. I reminded him but he was all suspicious about it like I was making something up. stressed

I imagine so Mich. But that's just annoying in my opinon. What is wrong with split screen? I mean please...I was rather fond of it. Or is it that no one wants to share anymore?

I have heard good and bad things about Steam, dan uses it a lot.

It's a money thing I bet.

I don't have a problem with Steam either. Used it to Demo 2 games that I ended up buying for their respective consoles. I just wish they had more demos. Games are so expensive it's nice to try before you buy and that games version of Netflix (can't remember what it's called just now) is way too pricey in its own right. At least when you take into account how much time I actually have to root around in games. $20+/month...yeahhhhno.
