My mom is a freelance journalist. She has strong objections to people writing original works for free. On the one hand I can see her point. She lives by her pen, or rather, keyboard. On the other hand, I enjoy things like fanfiction (so long as it's well written), which is only legal if you're not making money off of it.

Thoughts?

I think that writing online for free is a good way to get started. My sister reads lots of original stories over at fictionpress.net and a few of those stories have been turned into published works. You need to get your work to people somehow.

I think that writing for free is fine. It can be a good way to establish a fan base and to find unbaised criticisms for your particular writing style.

I can sell my work as a storyline to bungie and lucasarts. Then microsoft will have to buy lucasarts and then they will make the greatest games in the world and I'll get some money for the storyline lol. It's brilliant why haven't I ever thought of that.

    Best way to write. xD

'sides, I'm a roleplayer for the most part. Eat me if I try to make you pay for that - hell, that's what makes it so special, literate roleplay. o: Your writing... is repaid in writing! 'www'

If I ever charge for my work, it'll be only because publishing costs money, and because I need to eat. <3

Writing online is a good way to get started. You are open to suggestions and comments. It can help you approve. If you choose to make a career out of writing, even better. But some people prefer to write in their spare time. It all depends on what you want.

I would have to agree with general theme. Writing for free is more than okay, it is good because that way it gives the writer people to comment on thier work and the net can serve as a training ground for the writer. Personally I can't imagine charging people to read some of less than elegant works.

There is nothing wrong with free writing. I think this because if you read and write it for free, you can improve your writing or help the author with making their work better. It will not cost either a cent because, they did not pay anything to read it.

I think writinf for free is perfectly fine. Everyone starts out writing for free, anyways. It's good practice. Besides, the purpose of writing is to have fun and express yourself, not necessarily to make money.
