So, this class may be a little different from the normal classes that people get. I think I'd like to start at Speak n' Spell class.

Course Theme

Developing spells in a variety of manners, without detracting from the original purposes of that spell. Also, to provide the chance of doing a biweekly/weekly spell though not necessarily required but strongly encouraged.

Course Objectives:

Learning to experiment with different types of spells to bring in a large variety into people's experiences. This means that certain spells may be done solely for practice sake and is encouraged.

Course Disadvantages to Users

I will be requiring some type of reading material - in such a way that it must be in the form of book literature. It's less the reading material itself but more the aspect of published spell craft. This includes, but not limited, New age spells, folklore based spells (search hard enough and you can find a spell in almost all folklore. Especially southern folklore and English folklore. There may be some in New England folklore that may be interesting to try), court cases or witch trail cases [basically what people stated under torture where their spells], and of course any adventure/fiction novel spells [because Chaotes got nothing on this.]. Older manuscipts, especially old german or old english would be prized and I would like anyone who has one of these to set up at least a three week spell out of those. There's lots of french books which also have a set up in them.

I will not accept material posted on the web without it being from a published and circulated book. Why? Sometimes a book includes other pieces to the recipe or spell [Illes 5000 spell book includes how to make some of the oils/mojo bags in the back or the meaning of certain herbs in order to help as a reference material.] so sometimes the recipes themselves require further material than it's been posted (usually because the site has copy-pasta'd the item). And I myself will be upset about this ruling because I love to source LuckyMojo.com. Furthermore, I want it to be circulating because there's plenty of books on Scribid that are self-published books which may or may not be available to everyone here.

Course advantages

I will allow personal spells every three weeks. Though you are not expected to share those.
I will allow people to use what other people have posted in a previous week, just as long as the person has some access to that book/material and has read it first hand.

Course set up

I want people to post one example spell from literature (or personal items).

Then I want the person who posted their spell, to post either four different ways to do that spell over (with similar elements, but the same goal or the same spell with different wording, etc etc etc. We need to see the connection) or to pick one through four [depending on who is doing it] other people's posted spells and rework them as well.

Then I would like for either after a week or after two weeks of gathering material for everyone to pick one spell (reworked) of theirs [not other people's reworkings because their reworkings may have more understanding besides textual] and work through it. You don't need to complete it or you can if you'd like whatever it is that the spell is. You could just go through the motions and have nothing attached to it magically.

If you get inspired by how someone else did their reworking, then you should definitely discuss it further with them about any other clarifications that they were doing. If you want to do their spell, out side of "classwork" then feel free. I can't stop you. LOL!

This is an experiment in trying to get people more creative and come up with an idea. And it's to help me with my own spell development. I'd like to see what everyone comes up with.

Please be aware, that I might have theme challenges (which means that I'd say a theme for the next week and you'd have to find a spell that fits that spectrum) - which may be user generated - themes include over arching topics to particular herbs/items that the spell may need.

So who is interested? it's going to be pretty indepth.

Time line

Starts when I get back to school (Jan-9) Monday.

Need more advice on

Deadline requirements.
Whether or not people can one hit a week and skip the next (though you can't skip a theme week because let's face it, it's the point of the theme week for everyone to have that theme). But that wouldn't include for your three (ie you can't skip two weeks and then do a personal spell the next week).
Formatting (as in how I should run this to make it easier for everyone).
Whether people can post their results/experiences on how their spells went (even if they were practice ones - how they felt, etc).

I'd be interested in this smile It would force me to start having my craft be built more steadily.

That looks like a really worthwhile project and I'm sure there'll be some interesting outcomes! Fair play DF biggrin

I guess I should ask if anyone has any concerns about it.

I do have minor concerns about the fact that there is access to our guild on a public side, and it may appear that we are promoting (with this class and that I'm a Co-Captain) people to perform spells [which I am......] but outside of the guild. I don't want a, let's say for arguments sake, a 50 year old Granny who just started working in witchcraft to come in and complain about how we've publicly given access and free range to everyone with hexes or curses or whatever have you.

I also have minor concerns about the nature of cursing and hexing, I would advocate the allowable presentation of curses and hexes (because I like the saying "If you can't hurt, you can't heal" ) which may be against moral codes here (though please understand that every blessing can be reworked to be a curse and every curse can be reworked to be a blessing). So I would like people to at least -try- to rework a spell regardless of the nature of that spell during that theme week - should I say "Hey you have to do a curse that does... "such and such" effect".

Though I do allow for people to skip weeks that they don't like or can't do, but at the same time... it seems besides the point if people don't do curse reworkings since it's part of the spell dealio.

So those are a few of my concerns, a) public guild front and b) people might not /ethically/ want to look at curses.

Personally I see no problem with the public access issue. Reason being is that only people looking for these sorts of things would go looking if you follow? Well, I guess there can always be the odd rare exception.
I doubt there would be much in the way of formula that could not be found in part or whole via google searches. There are thousands of websites out there doing spells and curses etc and in the vast majority of these, there is no interaction between the webpage author and the reader. This is the main reason why I think it is ok on the face of it, that there is two (multi) way communication here. Errors of interpretation have opportunity for correction, explanations can be given, and a point of ethics can be expanded and discussed.
I would think that participation would be the main obstacle.

For deadlines I think 1-2 weeks per lesson would be appropriate.

I can't wait until this starts 3nodding .

Here's my deal, I will host the Spell n' Speak as long as there is one other person with me (or at least two people - because I assumed the way I'd host it would be separate threads per week). I can't talk to myself, ... I mean I could but that's dealing with insanity.

So if I go two weeks or so without any activity (so a full cycle with one practice or not so practice... spell) besides me (or that singular person) then I'll cancel the thing.

I'll move it [the start] from Jan 9th to Jan 16th (everyone in US will have an extra day off - and it's the week of my birthday, [Jan 18th]) to help with dealing with the fact that I'm going to be busy the next couple of days moving back into my apartment for school. [sorry it'd be starting later....]

I'll assume that there may be more people coming in who haven't replied yet because they are too scared to or because they haven't spotted it yet in the activity section, but I'll only assume that there are a max of maybe 6 hypothetical people who may do this including what the four who've posted so far.

I will have a formatting/Q&A thread going up next week to help start off with things and get every format settled.

What I was thinking was that have one thread specifically dedicated to the Spell n' Speak, then having separate branch threads for weeks that are the bi-weekly spell practice and have people post that there to keep everything organized.

Basically I want the Spell n' Speak thread to be a speaking thread on the technique and foundation for how one revises/creates aspects out of a spell to make a new one. And less about the practice of it in real life. Sounds a little counter intuitive, but I think people (like myself) will realize how different a spell is when one talks about it to when one performs it. I'm always changing things until the last minute, to be honest.
