Please post here any suggestions for how to make this guild bigger and better.

What you would like to keep.

What you would like to have added.

Where we can improve.

Where we went wrong.

Please speak candidly - we can not change if we don't know what we're failing on.

Thanks to anyone willing to pitch in. mrgreen

Suggestions/points to discuss so far

*RL submissions link/discussion - separated into US/UK/other markets > Resources forum: would need moderating to ensure up to date and taking on board contributions from guild members.

*Plot doctoring area > Discussion based.

*On-topic spam > tips/advice: youtube, links, blogs...

*Weekly/fortnightly/monthly focus > Essentially a themed writing class/work shop with prompts and advice/guidance/support. Guest spots from more experienced guild members for hosting theme/class/workshop (application process?).

*Guild promotion > Keep us busy and active (ideas for this welcome).

*Accountability > Word count/page goals, writing buddies/bullies: focus on how to get to where you need to be [advice, support, encouragement].

*Editing > Tips, advice, guides, beta readers, chapter swaps.

*Contests > links to (sponsor external contests for advertising the guild?)

Research > Resources - links, timelines, important events/figures in history...

Genre > Threads dedicated to specific genres (this idea came from Punk's thread on Vampire Tales)

Hiring > 'teachers' paid to do workshops on a temp basis ie/ hosting a 2 week workshop on a specific topic or area.

One thing I was considering was having a thread or subforum dedicated to submitting work, which could be divided into areas such as UK and US markets.

Links to known magazines, ezines, publishers, etc. (Which would hopefully be contributed to by the members as they submit/have work published by).

There would have to be moderators for each thread/sub though to keep track of known markets in their country. There could also be a crossover of markets though if magazines etc accept international submissions.

The markets thing would be cool, though I'm afraid my contributions would mostly be 'here are my magazines. submit.'

A plot doctoring area'd be nice: I'm working on another novel, actually trying to outline it first, and I'm hitting some snags.

I think that is all that should be required for the magazine threads. I can't really see there being much in the way of engagement there but would be nice to be available as part of the resources.

I am finding it very time consuming trying to sift through what still exists, what doesn't, what pay, what don't, what are Uk based, what aren't... etc etc.

Plot doctoring also does sound like another good idea. Do you think it would be more of a group discussion or a 'submit/post for feedback' kind of thing?

Theory Train is Canada-based, doesn't pay, still exists, and accepts anything as long as it is spec fic. If that is at all up your alley.

I think it'd probably have to be more discussion-based, so we could figure things out and clarify things and pool ideas.

Clearly spec fic/mainstream fantasy is what I should be writing if I want to find many markets. The work I currently have that are short stories/articles are more reflections on human nature, experiences, society, and biographical. I'm really going to need to find a market that looks suitable and write for that market, rather than try to place existing work. Not great when you become obsessed with writing what you want to write... lol.

I'm thinking a thread devoted to tips people find such as: youtube videos, blog posts, websites etc all related to the craft of writing. Basically a big thread of specific spam. Ha!

I like the idea of specific spam. Spam is good.

I like the idea of having a weekly focus.
A bit like a writing class, possibly. I'm not very clear on the idea.
But, it'd work a bit like the writing prompts that were going earlier.
It'd be a bit like a weekly ( or monthly) workshop to improve certain bits of writing.
Such as, "this week we'll work on characters."
Different members can do different "classes".

Except, that seems very time consuming. sweatdrop

And then a lot more promotion of the guild.

Thanks for the suggestions - I like those ideas too. If the responsibilities were split, or we had 'guest spots' from more experienced members then there wouldn't be as much pressure on the few. Kind of like an application process to present a theme or 'class' for that week/fortnight/month.

Ok, I've added a list in the first post so we can keep track of what to discuss/work on.

I've added points about editing and contests too.

Maybe a research forum, for historical works and the like? Finding information's always tough, for me. I'd find that highly useful for some of the projects I'd like to work on.

Thank you for the suggestion, I shall add it to the list.

Yes, it's always handy to have points of reference, timelines and important events so you know where to place your story and the like. I love researching though :3 I often get lost browsing various things and I have to remind myself not to go too far off track.

Yeah, I love researching, too--I just often find that I like to set things in places that lack extensive information (well, if there's any information at all, really), in which case research becomes fairly difficult and too time consuming for my tastes.

If you've already written something, but you can get away with skimming over, just make a note to come back to it. biggrin (Or leave something like xxx which can be searched for and edited later.
