Lo and behold I make use of familiars! This is a private RP for Nisshou H's Uwasa and Sabella's familiar Nichi. No posting please.
((This is the story of where Uwasa finds her accessories so just pretend she doesn't have them yet.))

“Look at this, Nichi.” The peach colored mare said nosing at something sticking out between a pair of rocks. She had taken her fathers’ advice to take some time to herself to explore now that she was grown. Her mother had been less certain which had lead the fox Nichi to tag along as Uwasa traveled south. After several days of exploring forest she had come to the swamplands. At first she had been completely disgusted by it. It stank, there were bugs everywhere and she was pretty sure she didn’t want to know what was in the stagnant water. She had been in complete agreement with the fox that they should leave…until now. Now she had a mystery to uncover, almost literally.

“What is it?” At first Uwasa had thought it was a branch covered with hanging moss. Something hadn’t felt right when she had brushed against it though. It didn’t move quite like a tree. Further investigation had led her to wonder what a branch was doing laying between a pair of rocks anyway. That was an odd place for a tree.

She began tugging at the moss without waiting for the fox’s input. The fastest way to understand would be to face it head on. While the moss liked to tear off in chunks it didn’t seem to want to come completely free.

Nichi sighed watching the young mare at work. She was a lot more like her father than her mother. Quieter though. Nichi counted her blessings for that. She wouldn’t know what to do with a miniature Torao running around. And Uwasa was indeed miniature. She had inherited the kirin’s stature and the look of a cat. No one knew where she had gotten that tail or those teeth but she was certainly a sight to see these days. And bullheaded.

“If you keep tugging away like that you’re going to break it.” She chided peering up at the mare with slanted eyes. To her it was just a branch. If Uwasa wanted to think it was something special that was fine but this was getting pointless. “I’m going to look for a decent place for us to sleep for the night. The sun will set soon.” She turned her back on the mare with a flick of her tail and began to walk off.

It was the scraping sound that stopped her.

Slowly she turned around to see that the branch was beginning to pull away from the rock. “Uwasa, would you stop that?” She barked bristling uneasily. She didn’t know where the rest of the tree was but she didn’t want it crashing down on top of them.

Uwasa ignored the fox. She wasn’t going to break it and even if she did then she’d be able to show Nichi that it wasn’t wood. She kept pulling out pieces until she finally got a solid hold. It didn’t quite feel the same as the rest of the moss but she didn’t let that bother her. Now that she had something better to hold on to she’d make some progress and put her full effort into pulling at the thing. She could hear Nichi saying something about the sun and sleep but she wasn’t really listening. Her full attention was on the not-branch. It was starting to move.

The scraping sound sent a chill down her spine but she was determined to free whatever it was. She planted her hooves as firmly as she could before yanking at it with all her might. The grin that covered her face when she felt the object come free vanished the instant she saw the heap of bones in front of her.

A terrified whinny shot out of her throat before she bolted to hide behind a tree. She could feel the hairs on her tail standing on end as well as the fox that had followed close behind her. Uwasa and Nichi stayed behind the tree for quite some time breathing heavily from fright. “It was a skeleton.” Uwasa said, still in shock. “It was a moss covered skeleton.”

Nichi would have found Uwasa’s tail amusing if she hadn’t just been scared to her wits end. It hadn’t taken the fox more than a second to join Uwasa behind the tree and she had no intention of going back out. “I told you not to mess with it!” She exclaimed trying to calm her heart. It was heard with images of cascading bones playing over and over through her mind.

A silence settled around the two punctuated only by the sounds of slowly calming breathing. This swamp was creepy, smelly and all together a horrible place to be. Why the spirits had even created such a place was beyond Nichi’s imaginative capabilities. Once her breathing had returned to almost normal she looked up at the mare. “Let’s get out of here.”

“No.” Was Uwasa’s answer. She had calmed down now and was beginning to think more clearly. It was a skeleton but it had been a small one. With golden eyes shining with resolve and curiosity she poked her head around the tree to face down the skeleton. “I think…it’s human.” She said as though it would make the fox feel better. “It’s wearing clothes…and…” As she spoke she drew closer and closer to the skeleton. “Nichi! Nichi come see! It’s got a pelt like my papas have!”

Her excitement now outweighed any reservations she still had about approaching the human bones. She trotted over to it and nosed at the fur that sat over the skeleton’s shoulders. It was spotted and silvery in color. As far as size it was a lot smaller than either of her fathers’ and the clasp appeared to be made from bone as well as a cord underneath. “It’s perfect!” She cried grabbing an edge of it to tug off the bones with no hesitation. Whoever had owned it was already dead, what could they want with a fur now?

Pulling at the fur knocked the skull off and sent it rolling along the mossy ground as Uwasa worked the fur over her head.

Nichi had absolutely no intention of leaving the safety of the tree but she did poke her head out around the side. She shuddered to see the girl poking around the bones without a care in the world. That girl was too much like her fathers for her own good. Death and gore didn’t seem to bother any of them the way it bothered Uwasa’s mother. “And what would your mother say to know you were stealing from the dead?” She cringed when Uwasa knocked the deceased’s head off. The girl didn’t even seem to notice it but Nichi couldn’t pull her eyes away from the tumbling skull. It rolled over and over and over again until it knocked against another bone.

Nichi could feel the blood draining from her face. It was another skull but someone had worked ropes through it like it was to be used as a satchel. “U-uwasa.” She stammered unable to take her eyes of the gruesome creation. “Another sk-skull…human skull!” Whoever had done such a thing had a sickening sense of humor. What if they were still around? They needed to leave. “We have to go…now.”

Uwasa turned to look at the fox with a perplexed look on her face. What was she yammering about? “Human…skull?” Her head tilted in a quizzical fashion before she followed Nichi’s line of sight to see what she was seeing. Nichi was right. There was a second skull and it looked like it had been arranged for easy transportation. “Huh...” Her voice trailed off as she wandered over unaware of Nichi’s panic. Uwasa wanted a closer look. When she got one she noticed something didn’t look quite right.

“I don’t think this one’s human…” She said sniffing at the second skull. “Humans don’t have teeth like this...” Actually Uwasa didn’t know anything that had teeth quite like this skull. She lifted her head and turned to look south; was this creature from out there? What was out there anyway? Was it just more swamp? What lay in wait beyond the horizon? She took a step towards the mystery before being shoved out of her wonderment by Nichi snapping at her tail.

Uwasa yelped and pulled her tail up away from the fox’s mouth. “That hurt!” She said indignantly. Just because her mother had asked the fox to look after Uwasa it didn’t put her in charge. “I know you want to leave but I’m not done.”

“Yes, you are.” Nichi hadn’t wanted to bite her charge but it seemed like the only way to get the girl’s attention. Shouting hadn’t worked and she was getting fed up. Uwasa wouldn’t listen to anything she said. Supposedly this trip had been planned to boost Uwasa’s self-confidence. Nichi was pretty sure that was the last thing that was needed now more than ever. What she needed was to take lessons from her mother for a change. Her fathers had decided, for some bizarre reason, that Uwasa was not suited for the ‘noble life of a kirin’ whatever that meant. They were the only two that seemed to understand the full meaning. All anyone else new was that instead of being watched constantly they let her out on her own. Instead of teaching her obedience, which Nichi had expected given Torao’s particular attitude concerning females, they taught her how to track and plan. Nichi wouldn’t say they raised her like a boy considering that they had skipped teaching her more advanced combat techniques but they certainly hadn’t raised her like a girl.

“We’re going to get out of here because it’s dangerous, Uwasa, do you understand me? When you’re older then you can come back. Until then listen to me for once and let’s go home.” She did her best to sound stern and look serious. It was hard. Uwasa was small but a fox was still no match for a horse. “Please, just leave the bones in peace.”

Uwasa was two seconds away from disobeying for no reason beyond the lingering pain in her tail. She glared at her fox nanny. She was old enough to be out mostly on her own. Her fathers never would have let her go off like this if she wasn't. Only the very clear panicked look in Nichi's eyes made her hesitate in her decision to head deeper into the swamp out of spite. If she went then Nichi would follow and Nichi was already a bundle of nerves.

"Fine." She finally conceded. She didn't necessarily want to cause Nichi grief she just wanted to see and satisfy some of her curiosity. That would clearly have to wait until another visit. There would be one, of course. One day she wouldn't have a fox tagging along with her and she could go in as deep as she wanted and examine every skeleton she came across thoroughly.

"Lead on, Nichi." She said giving one last look to the mysterious swamp that lay stretching beyond the horizon. "One day." Then she turned and picked up the skull by one of the ropes woven into it. It was clean enough that she didn't imagine it would be a problem. She wanted to study it more so she would have to keep it with her. Perhaps her fathers would know what it was. They were more traveled than she was as it were. If anyone knew they would.

Uwasa and Nichi had made it back home. It had taken the duo a full three days to get there and it probably would have taken longer if Uwasa hadn't been up at the crack of dawn each morning. The fox's legs were just too short to keep up with Uwasa when she galloped.

Excited to see her family again Uwasa set her trophy skull down and bolted for the entrance of the cave that served as their home ever since her birth. "Mom! Dads!" She called and then added in her fathers' language. "I'm home! Come see what I've found!"
