User Image The boy was sleeping. Ambol had left him snuggled in their little makeshift cave of branches, leaves, and mud. The boy was clever and had fashioned the lean-to when the weather had gotten too cold for him to travel. He talked to her...a lot...thought she had not replied back to him yet. Not since their first conversation. She was actually a little afraid to. He was going to go home, once they figured out where home was. Then she would have to say goodbye. The fact that winter had come before they had found his home made her situation a bit worse.

This gave them more time to bond. And she was certain that was what they were doing. At night he cuddled against her for warmth. She felt a distinct motherly feeling for him, and she caught herself licking his face clean at times. For now, she was out hunting. While he slept this was a good opportunity for her to find him something to eat when he wakes up. That was his typical routine after all. With a flick of her tail, Ambol hopped over a fallen log and lowered her nose to the ground. If she could catch the scent of a rabbit or something that would mean her boy would have food for a day or two, plus a nice fur to add to the very small pile in their lean-to for warmth.

Marble had been very fortunate for the past few days. The weather wasn't too bad, at least not bad to where her densely muscled body and strong leathery wings couldn't handle it. To top it off, her last few hunts had went over smoothly, a rabbit and wolf yesterday, though admittedly the wolf had been old and half dead when she'd taken him down, and today her hunt yielded larger fruits for her labors.

She kept her jaws clenched tightly over the nose of the young moose calf she'd managed to snatch away from it's herd, her body sucking away the small creatures life energy as she slowly suffocated it. The energy she got from this beast would be enough to last her for a while, and certainly the creature's flesh would not go to waste inside her belly. She couldn't help but feel pleased with herself all over again. The catch had gone better then she'd thought it would, probably due to winter being finally here and the animals having a harder time finding sufficient nourishment. Either way, the herds loss was her gain.

Marble tightened her clawed hold on the calf as it started up a renewed struggle, an instinctual reaction now that death was near for the small beast. He managed to struggle to his feet with her, but still she was bigger and weighed more, so his fight was a futile one and he just stood weakly in protest while she mentally apologized for prolonging his suffering. 'It will be over soon.' She mentally told him, tightening her jaws even more. 'Soon...'

Nothing... Any scent she thought she had caught was too weak. Too old. One would almost think this area had been hinted through already. She didn't think there were any humans in this area. Not that she had found, which was sad. Being able to watch some humans would have made this winter go quicker. She'd have more to focus on then just her boy. No..no! Not her boy. The boy. He wasn't hers, she could not think like that. She was just setting herself up for heart ache this way. Ambol shook her head to clear it, and in doing so thought she caught the sound of something in pain.

Oh! That was promising! Ambols ears pricked forwards and she lightly began to scramble through the snow. With a lightness in her steap, she focused on where she thought the creature laid. Perhaps it was sick...if it was her boy could not eat it, but he could use the pelt. She could eat the life ess---

Ambol had leapt over the crest of a hill and found the source of the struggling creature. A moose calf, filled with more then enough essence to last her months if she were to eat from it. However...it was in the jaws of perhaps the answer to her earlier wondering. her tail immediately snapped upwards in alarm as her eyes widened at the sight of the temporal with it's prey.

It wasn't going to be able to stand much longer, the trembling in the calf's legs and body showed the lack of oxygen was taking its toll. Marble grunted slightly, shifting more of her weight onto the weakening calf's back until it finally dropped to the ground shaking and desperately trying to gulp air into it's starving lungs. Marble had to shift herself away from it when it struck blindly out with a hoof, and it was at that moment she noticed she wasn't alone.

Her eyes widened, staring at the other kage in curiosity. She hadn't thought this area was claimed yet, so seeing another of her kind around came as a slight shock. Pleasant though it was. She released the calf's mouth, letting the creature gasp for air. It was too weak to try to escape for quite a few more minutes at least. "Can I help you, darling?" She fairly purred, her tail twitching behind her. It had been a while since she'd had contact with another living thing tht wasn't on her list of meal items, and she was hoping for a nice chat if the other kage were so inclined.

Not to mention smart enough to talk. She didn't want to think how horrid it would be if the other female had a canine soul, she would simply die of boredom then. "Care for a bite?"

Her first instinct was to run. Run and flee as fast as she could. She'd never seen a temporal before, but she knew they had no problem eating other kage. Or humans... Ambols green eyes darted to the moose calf, then back to the temporal that had it in it's vice grip. If she fled, she'd lead the temporal right to her boy. ..er...the boy. She could not do that...he'd yell and throw sticks at her and end up dead. Then she'd be without her boy...the boy...

Hearing the purring voice of the other in her head, she was not certain if that came with a delight at seeing something edible wander across her path or not. Ambols claws curled into the snow under her, and her tail remained stiff and straight in the air. her fur was even starting to stand on end with her back starting to arch upwards in her fright. Confusion of course followed when the temporal would offer her some of it's current meal. Ambol glanced back towards the calf, and she took a stiff slinking step forwards, if a little to one side. She didn't trust the temporal..but she couldn't run off now...and if she ate something then she'd have more strength for later...if it came to that.

Marble tilted her head to one side, watching the other kage's odd movements before she started laughing, her mouth opening to release chuffing noises. 'My dear, you look like one of the old temple alley cats that use to visit me.' She exclaimed with delight, digging her claws into the calf a bit more a she watched the other kage. 'Certainly you don't think I'd harm such a pretty thing as yourself?' She asked, before chuffing again in laughter.

'I say now, stop dawdling and come eat before I suck all the life from him.' She chided the other kage in amusement. Small and easy a target as the other kage was, Marble certainly wasn't going to eat her. She found eating one's own kind to be unpleasant and, over all, rather dull. She didn't like the taste the recycled souls of kage had, so fresh game was all she cared for herself. Still, she couldn't blame the child for fearing her.

'I swear on my roar that I'll not harm you.' Marble promised, though she couldn't stop laughing. 'Kage are much too tainted for my tastes.'

Was that meant to ease her nerves? Ambol was not certain if the temporal was being snide or sincere. She honestly wished her mother had taught her a bit more about these different types of kage other then telling her they ate anything. Her tail trembled slightly as she took another step towards Marble. Ambol tried to calm down as the other would laugh. She was at ease and did not look like she was going to lunge up and attack her right now. She managed to get her back to stop it's arch, and her tail curled down tight against her side. However her fur simply would not lay flat no mater how she tried to calm her tense muscles.

Ambol slunk closer at the urging of the temporal. Though she worried more now about offending the other by refusing to come near. She could not think of any response right away to what may have seemed to be cajoling on the temporals part.

'Thank You'. She finally managed to meekly reply. It would have been rude not to say something at this point. It made her grateful though, in the next few moments, that her boy was not with her. If this temporal preferred non-kage souls...she worried that a young boy would have appealed to her as a sweet dessert after the calf. Ambol closed her eyes for a moment and drew in some of the calf's life essence. She doubted she was draining even a small percent from it what the temporal was right now.

'I...am Ambol.' she managed to quietly murmur to the other as she ate.

'What a pretty name.' Marble nodded, looking Ambol over. 'And you really have such pretty markings.' She complimented the smaller kage, her words spoken with complete honesty. Ambol's colors and markings reminded her of the clothing one might have seen at the circus, and Mable's heart ached as she remembered those happy and easy times in her life.

'I am Marble, grandest roarer of the Seven Wonders, fiercest beast among my litter, and princess of the beast tents.' Marble smiled, introducing herself with the same introduction the circus use to use for her. 'Or rather, I was...now I suppose I am something else.' She laughed, looking down at the moose calf and watching his eyes. He would pass soon, and then her and Ambol could start in on the creature's meat.

'So tell me, have you been in the area long?' Marble inquired curiously. 'I would have figured there would be much less life around with a kage in the area.' The again, Ambol was much smaller then Marble, so she probably didnt need to kill as often, nor as much, and the area would have supported Ambol easier then it could Marble. 'Oh, have you ever been to the circus?' She asked suddenly, content to chatter away instead of eat. 'It's been years since I was there, I can't help but wonder how everyone is doing.'

Ambol found her tail still pressing tight to her side as she hunkered down near to the temporal and calf. The essence she was pulling off the calf was filling, and after only a few moments of feeding she honestly did not think she could drink anymore. Ambol blinked her green eyes at Marble when the temporal would actually compliment her on her markings. She let her eyes move to look down at a wiggly sun marking on her shoulder. Well if she was admiring her markings then maybe she would be less likely to tear into them?

The name Marble offered her seemed needlessly long. Not that Ambol was going to say so. It was a pretty name despite being so long. One of her ears pinned back, her head tilting to one side as she regarded Marble. She shifted her paws against the ground as she ignored the calf. Beasts died all the time after all. She even enjoyed playing with the birds she managed to catch after all.

'I have only recently come here.' She finally answered a little meekly. 'The change of weather has forced me to halt my travels. Normally I only eat birds or rodents. The larger life forms I leave alone, humans tend to notice when larger prey starts turning up dead.' Her tail twitched beside her as she considered the trouble this could mean. Two kage hunting one area? She would have to stay close to her boy to ensure he was not accidently taken as prey.

Ambol's head tilted slightly to one side at the final question posed, and she hoped that her answer did not anger Marble. 'I...do not know what a circus is.'

'Oh, thats such a shame...' Marble sighed, looking down at the calf before she sucked the rest of the life energy away. She lay her head on it's now still side, watching Ambol with a look of pity one might give a child who'd never experienced candy before. 'It was my home, long before I was as I am now. There was always plenty to eat, and everyone was very affectionate there. Now it is terribly lonely all the time.'

She gave Ambol another grin. 'But even so, I do suppose not all manners of our kind can be of the types who enjoyed such things as circus' and the like. So I can't hold it against you.' She gave the calf's lifeless body a heave toward Ambol with her nose. 'But come now, don't be shy. If you've been living on small things, this one is sure to be a treat. Help yourself to as much as you want.'

Marble gave her tail a bit of a twitch, then got her wings into a more comfortable position on her back. 'I can only eat larger things...The smaller beasts aren't worth the energy I'd spend tracking and killing them. At least, thats what I've found. So big fellas like this one suit me fine.' She happily tore into the neck of the calf, ripping away a few good mouthfuls before continuing. 'Even so, I tend to have to move about a lot, since as you said, Humans really do notice the bigger ones missing.' She sighed, shaking her head a bit sadly as some blood dripped down her muzzle. 'They have no problem with other animals eating as their natural order dictates. Why do they have so much hatred for us?'
At this, she turned her silvery eyes to Ambol again. 'I don't get it at all.'

Could one truly miss out on something they were unaware of? Ambol's life was simple, but normally very content. So when Marble would give her a look that seemed like sympathy or pity, she felt oddly uncomfortable. Ashamed almost, as if she were ignorant of something that was expected of her. Ambols tail twitched again and her green eyes shifted to look away.

'I do not remember anything of my old life. I have not tried either. I don't see how remembering a life that I can have no part of would prove useful. It would be like carrying extra expectations.' She quietly answered. When the body of the calf was nudged towards her, she looked upon the dead beast. It was undeniably generous of the temporal to offer her to take her fill. But that also made her nervous. She had been under the impression that temporals were predators of normal Kage.

Ambol shifted forwards enough so that she could reach out and start chewing on the upper leg of the calf. Perhaps if she gnawed it off...Marble would think nothing of her carrying most of the meat left off. She was sure her boy could cook the leg later. 'I can imagine that smaller creatures would not be as filling.' She found herself agreeing 'Though I do not know the reason behind the humans hatred. I can only assume there must be some sort of cause. Hatred must come from somewhere doesn't it?' She was aware of Marbles gaze upon her, and she kept her own lowered out of a instinctual impulse not to seem like she might be challenging the other in some way.

Marble smiled while watching the other kage, not a gruesome grin of malice, but rather one with a bit of motherly affection in it if anything else. She had been an unusual tiger in her previous life, and she was certain by the other kage's actions that she must be something of an unusual beast in this life as well. She didn't know how, other then she now had wings where she before had not, but she had claws and fangs like before, so to her there was not much difference between herself and Ambol.

Well, other then size. But that could be fixed with good meals regularly, or so Marble thought. It never occurred to her that there were such a difference as species to her, anymore then it had between her tiger self and the lions she preformed with. Ambol was just a malnourished cub, and Marble's heart went out to the small, ground bound female.

She sighed a little, looking away from the other kage and calf with a bit of sadness in her eyes. 'A life of remembrance and loss is one that is terrible. I miss my family and friends...but the humans I knew are no longer willing to have me. I'm too different now, and they do not know me any longer...' She felt the familiar constricting of her chest, a longing to be home, once more preforming under the tents with people laughing or cheering, or screaming in fright when she roared. She missed the attention and the life energy of the place, but mostly, she missed the petting and affection she'd always received after a show.

She turned her attention back to the calf, helping herself to the lower half of the calf to give Ambol the upper. Marble could hunt again, and she was sure Ambol could use the meat more now then she herself could. She had fed the days prior but heavens knew when the other kage had last feasted till she was content.

All Ambol could think at the moment was that...this was clearly not a typical encounter. It could not be. Otherwise she would not have been warned so strongly against the Temporal Kage. She chewed on the leg a bit more firmly and was satisfied when it started to twist free. She lifted her head and licked her muzzle clean of some blood when she heard Marble sighing.

'I can not imagine not being welcome by my family. I would think I would go mad with grief.' Ambol would openly admit. She moved her mothers very much. She idolized Leshyae and striven to be more like her. To have either of them drive her away out of ignorance of who she was...well...it would have just broken her heart. Ambol licked her lips again and looked down at the leg laying between her paws. She already felt gorged, and she dared not eat anymore. The reason? Well, a yawn suddenly stretched her mouth. That there would have been why. She was going to get too sleepy if she ate too much more.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 23, 2012 12:49 am

Marble chuckled when she saw Ambol yawn, her eyes glowing in amusement as she did. 'Do not feel the need to force yourself awake for me. Sleep little one, if you wish.' She took into account the remaining meat on the calf, then tiled her head toward the smaller kage curiously. 'If you would like, I can help you move the rest of the meal to your den.'

She gave a pause, remembering something from her youth. Even the tigers and lions she'd grown up with hadn't freely shared their cages with other big cats easily. Showing off one's den in the wild would probably be just as taboo as showing off one's sleeping place in the circus had been. 'Or, I can hide the meat somewhere for you to get later, if you would like.' She offered instead. She stood up and stretched her wings out to their fullest, her back arching as she did.

She gave a bit of a yawn herself, more from relaxation then from actual fatigue. 'What do you say, little one?'

The weariness that came from a full meal was troublesome. As it brought more trouble to her now then she had been expecting when Marble would make such kind offers. Ambol's ears swiveled and leaned back some as she struggled for a good way to decline the offer to both sleep or have the food carried to her den. The last thing she wanted was the boy to be scared off by Marble!

Ambol watched Marble arching her back after altering her offer, and Ambol felt a sense of ease return to her. She rose as well and stretched her tail and back legs. It would do her no good to have a muscle tensed from the cold get strained. 'If you would hide it, that would be best. My den is..small...' She replied softly. There was no need to explain further then that after all. Ambol swished her tail back and forth slowly before she leaned down to take the ankle of the leg she had gnawed off into her mouth.

'Thank you for your kindness Marble.' She added as she lifted up the limb in her mouth. 'I hope you will not be troubled by any hunters in this area.'
