Obsidian Days
Chapter I
by Shore_Angel_Rebirth
It was bitter cold out and the night was dark. The electricity had gone out a week ago. The only buildings with light had back-up generators. All was still, save for the moans of the damned carried on the mournful wind.
Ayla jogged across the gravel, trying to hear over the loud crunch of her boots. Just because she had a gun didn't mean she was safe. She had picked her way through the wreckage that used to be Figeroa Wy and was now huffing through Silverado Park.
Ayla quickened her pace as she passed the playground area. Some of them were mindlessly milling around the swings. She cut across the grassy area to obscure the sound of her passing.
She was trying to get to St. Jude Regional Hospital, just on the other side of the park, where a group of survivors had managed to hole themselves up. She was coming back from scouting the police station where she had picked up the hand gun that she was now carrying. She had found the weapons locker opened and a duffle bag so she took what she could carry.
She and two other people had left their safe haven six hours ago. They had all headed in seperate directions and were to meet at CoMerica Bank three hours ago. She decided to move on because they were more than just late. In Ayla's mind they were dead.
"Uuuuuuunggh......"
The sound startled Ayla out of her thoughts as a creature shuffled out of the shadows of the restroom, reaching for her.
She gasped and let two rounds fly. One hit it in the right shoulder and drove it back a step. The second got it's mark and blew a large whole in the creature's head just above the left eye. It fell backwards with a wet thud as it hit the ground.
"Damnit!" she cried as she realized she had attracted the attention of the ones by the swings. The little ones were the first to move towards her. The were fresher and smaller so they could react faster.
She had wanted to avoid the open as much as possible, but now found herself sprinting through the middle of the soccer field. She could see the street just behind a small stand of trees and, just after that, the back steps of the hospital.
Ayla wove her way around the trees and bolted across the empty street. As she rushed up the stairs she fumbled with the security pass hanging from her neck. She swiped the card, fumbled with the code and heard quiet click of the door unlocking. She pulled it open and slammed it behind her.
"....safe...." she mumbled between gasps of air.
