...

On the 5th or thereabouts I got a mail from Amazon telling me the Amalur guide wouldn't be shipping until the 21st. Ok fine. Once I discovered the world map (and it did take me longer than it should've to do so) I figure yeah, it's huge. They need a few more days to finalize all the massiveness of it. ('Course now I'm wondering if 600 pages was enough. I think it's 600 pages.)

This morning I get notice that the date has been pushed back yet again. Now they're saying the 28th. I believe it was still this month but it's been a long morning so far and maybe I'm wrong. eek

But for reals, they better be making me a present to go with the book. scream

They'll just apologize for the inconvenience. They figure giving you the hints and tips in the guide is enough of a gift. But some exclusive content would be nice.

Right. XD I shouldn't get so squirreled up really. Amazon gave me $20 for ordering the game when I did. That and the more I get done w/o a guide the bigger I can brag. whee

But I do so like being squirreled up. (Sometimes.) I'm waffling on whether or not to dig around in the game and see if there's a % completed notifier like in DA. I want to know and I don't want to know. I haz a house nao though. That was fun. I wish that the bookshelves were stockable. (Reminds me of your glowing report on the perks of Oblivion.)

Ah yes, the ever frustrating controls of putting a book on a bookshelf in Oblivion. I heard the controls for that are much much nicer in Skyrim.

I haven't tried it yet on skyrim I'll admit...but I managed to lay the table on oblivion for six...it took me half an hour lol and much swearing

rofl That's hysterical AND admirable.

We'll be getting Skyrim at some point.

Oh tables, bump into them even the slightest and all your hard work goes to hell. And if you have things too close to the chair and you go to sit in the chair, the stuff moves and then screws everything else up.

I could just scream. Took a glance through the book and lo, it's not very comprehensive (despite being huge and in print for the blind) and when trying to find something via the index (am I wrong that the index is important??) it seems that the page numbers are at least 3 off.

This is what I waited for?

Is it a knockoff guide?
PostPosted: Wed Feb 29, 2012 5:42 am

Nope, the official.

It seems the "how to build a character" stuff is fairly comprehensive though nothing an experienced gamer isn't going to figure out in a few minutes of play. The maps are these nearly featureless, mis-labeled sepia blobs save for 1 and that's a world overview with recommended levels printed on the area (1 point for the guide, that's actually useful.) The maps don't even indicate things like cliffs and ridges--you know, things you have to walk MILES around.

Sagecrafting section tells you the names of the gems you can build but not a lot about how to build them. I can find no alchemy reference (IE: recipes for potions.) Now, if you put 75% of your level points into Alchemy and use the alchemy trainer at the right time by level 22-ish you can completely unlock the alchemy skill and THAT unlocks all the recipes for you.

However you're going to be hurting for lots of other skills. I took everything up a few points and focused on Detect Hidden (no chests marked on the maps, BTW, the only way you can find them all is max out your DH and then walk the world one area at a time) because that to me is crazy-necessary. Thereagain so is lockpicking and Dispelling. I can't to save my life figure out how to work the dispelling mini-game so I end up taking the XP hit and auto-attempting (and getting cursed a lot...I swear I spend more time walking/fast-traveling back and forth between what I was doing and the nearest healer...which of course I wouldn't be able to afford if I didn't have my DH maxed out.)

It seems also that it was too much to hope for that they'd include a Blacksmithing chart listing components with their bonuses/effects (in a general way of course...I understand it'd be a lot to ask for a full list) which would you know...make it a lot easier to do everything you need to do at a Merchant.

Now...the book is hardcover, huge and glossy and currently $26 (or thereabouts) so the price is nice but if like me you were looking for a comprehensive reference you'll be SOL. I mean for goodness' sake there's hardly any concept art in the thing to soften the blow. You can however use the thing as a weapon. HA!

Honestly I'd much rather have put 1/4 tank of gas in the car, bought a candy bar and another skein of yarn and waited for the wikia to come up.

Yeah, I would suggest the internet. Give it time, it will provide the information you seek shortly.

Yuuuup. Sucks though 'cause I like not having to have a computer handy when I'm gaming and I've already got SOOOO many games that need one. Even DA:O but that's mostly for double checking that I'm doing the exact right convo options for certain things. IIRC the book doesn't tell you step by step how to get Al's romance+title ending to go off right...and it is absolutely THE hardest one.

The good news is, I'll still be able to say I've done Amalur w/o the book 'cause what I need most isn't in there and I figure checking recommended level isn't really using a guide. XD

Well, though I don't feel like digging it out you can add Skyrim to that list of open games (pending, of course...it's not been shipped yet and I will probably dig myself far, far deeper into Amalur before I bother.)

And with the original 3 Devil May Cry games coming out on XBox next month those titles need tweaking.

And of course, with Witcher 2 also being released on 360...yeah. *watches money fly away* Though for that one I'm gonna wait (I think) for the Dark Edition.
