I love Green Acres but how the combination of the previous things you bought equals that I do not know.

And the 40 Days and 40 Nights thing...wow Amazon.

Congratulations! Your undead management skills make you a natural at working with people.
You think Amazon is trying to lure you over from the "dark side?"

rofl V. *prt sc*

Looks like Amazon understands religion about as much as I do. XD See the funny thing about the Green Acres one is I'd recently bought (and I don't mean too soon before for the database to have updated, mind you) some classic T.V. and added more to my wishlist. But noooo, that's not what got the hit. sweatdrop I know I certainly can't find a tie-in.

I didn't cap the best one ever though. Because I bought Hello Panda (panda-printed cookies filled with icing) they recommended I buy a 40-pack of Quilted Northern. Made me wonder if they knew something I didn't about the ingredients.

Wow...those are certainly interesting Felly...

I always wondered how Amazon worked out it's whole recommended for you thing...

It's kind of like a keyword thing. They'll recommend from the same department though I think that's filtered last. I guess that's how you get "if you like this horror movie we think you'll like that romantic comedy." They're movies on DVD. They recommend from the same companies/studios. Buy one thing in housewares and all of a sudden you've got housewares all over. But I think maybe in that instance...hmm, how to put this...they want to maximize your spending there.

Now me for example all I bought in the first couple of years was fantasy fiction, action films on DVD, and 80s hair metal cds. Then one day I look at the listings for an anime. All of a sudden they're recommending me EVERY anime ever made (that it's legal for them to sell in any case.) The first time I buy a PS2 game they're recommending me EVERY game on EVERY system. Really disconcerting when you buy something heavily fantasy-based like Champions of Norrath and all of a sudden they're recommending you the XBox 360 version of NFL Champions or something stupid like that.

I made the mistake of putting one Indian film on my wishlist (like India Indian) and fwoosh...every Indian film available in the U.S. is in my recommendations as well as every other film the actors appeared in.

Same thing happened when I bought Eve's Bayou. Having that, The Color Purple and the knowledge that I'll never willingly watch Beloved again (it hurts my heart) I'm pretty much set for movies w/African-American casts.

It's an extremely loose system like that. Every so often I spend time sifting through those recommends hitting the "not interested" and "do not use for recommendations" buttons. But the latter are tricky because the recommend system is so crazy.

OH OH! I totally forgot about my other favorite one (uncapped sadly--I was too traumatized). Because I bought X-Men Origins: Wolverine on DVD they recommended me Season 1 of Dora the Explorer also on DVD.

I defy anyone to correlate those (beyond that pesky on DVD thing.)

I get all twitchy every time I need to look up a product. "How is this going to affect my recommendations? O.o;"

Since I buy many of my textbooks through Amazon that is what 90% of my recommended items are. And because the last book I looked at for school was on Chinese history, all my book and dvd recommendations are for something Chinese.

I'll admit, my recommendations are a bit more varied, but that's because I used it to buy a load of presents over christmas...so I ended up with a bit of everything...but lately. Very knitting based. Stupid mum and her tea cozies

Amazon wants you to expand your interests...as long as they follow a theme.

whee heart

I was talking to a friend of mine last night who let slip that one group of his friends actually works on those recommend systems. I asked him to either kick them in the knee for me or pass along how Wolverine and Dora can be related...

He burst my bubble and said that someone on a family account probably bought Dora for their kids and Wolverine for themselves...boo. BUT! he didn't have an answer for why filters would run like that in a system that also has a "people who bought ___ also bought ____" feature in place.

HA!

I would still have him kick the person in the knee...you know, just for good measure.
