I'm going to be in marine biology courses in the future where I'll have to dissect animals. I was wondering if this would violate the precepts in any way.

I believe as a whole, Buddhism frowns upon cruelty to animals, but I think that dissection is condoned in that it is done in the pursuit of understanding

This and the fact that the animal(s) you dissect are most likely already dead. You aren't causing harm to anything.

Personally the question I would be asking is "How do I feel about it?" Are you ok with dissecting animals? Would you be if you received words of comfort? If it feels wrong, explain to your teacher your situation and see if you can find a compromise. If it doesn't feel wrong, go along with the class and try to get an A. What matters is what feels right or wrong to you. Follow your moral compass.

I don't think that I'm really comfortable with dissecting, but I don't think it would be such an issue if the animals had died of natural causes or something. I only watched when my high school biology class dissected deer hearts because I knew that were provided by hunters. I would want to know where the animals came from before actually partaking in their dissection. I'm not squeamish or anything, but I think it would be wrong if an animal was killed just so I could look at its insides...
