So, I've been 110 pounds for 3 wrestling seasons straight now, and I'm looking to start gaining weight. It isn't a healthy weight for me to wrestle at anymore. I was looking to try whey protein to help me out a bit, but I hear you could get kidney stones with it. Two things... A: Since I'm a vegetarian and have been for two years would the increase in protein give me a higher chance to get a kidney stone. And B: On top of drinking lots of water, how else could I prevent kidney stones.

A: Since I'm a vegetarian and have been for two years would the increase in protein give me a higher chance to get a kidney stone. And B: On top of drinking lots of water, how else could I prevent kidney stones. Firstly, kidney stones are composed primarily of calcium which builds up over time. Whey protein contains no calcium and thus it cannot build up. As to prevention of kidney stones, it is recommended that large amounts of water and juices such as orange juice and lemonade be consumed. Avoid high fructose corn syrup and sodas heavy in phosphoric acid (which can aggravate the kidneys and help cause stone formation). You're already on a great path, since a vegetarian/vegan diet has been shown to drastically reduce the risk of kidney stones. Hope this helps.
