Story: Long ago, out of the remnants of disaster-struck North America rose the nation of Panem. Panem was then comprised of thirteen districts, each producing specialized goods. Thirty-four years prior to this time, the nation’s districts rose in rebellion against the Capitol, throwing her into the darkness of a bloody civil war. Finally, the Capitol regained control over the nation. District Thirteen, regarded the instigator of the rebellion, was unfortunately destroyed in the process. Ever since then, the Capitol has held an annual Games, played to the last survivor. Each year, two teenaged tributes, male and female are taken from each district as players. This serves to remind the citizens of the true costs of rebeliion.

And now I, Gamemaker Tullia, present our field!
((This is largely for those of us who, like me, want to off our characters by arena trap))

As you can see, this year we are featuring a beautiful, arid canyon. Water is rare in this gorgeous red stone masterpiece, as is safety. For, though there are many caves where one may escape the horrid heat and possibly find water, there are many cave-dwelling snakes, hungry coyotes, and even a tribe of blood-thirsty natives who want nothing more than a tasty tribute snack. Let's look at some of the features!
1. The Cornucopia - Full of goodies and the location of the beginning of the game. It's always good to secure the goods in the Cornucopia, but the battle there at the Game's start is always satisfyingly bloody!
2. This lovely clear river has sweet, clean water, but also is desired by every tribute at will be well-guarded by the nastier ones, as well as snakes and savage natives!
3. And watch out when you go too far downstream looking for water! The waters in the arena's southern half are tainted with a strain of delirium-causing illness! However, this is the only place to get firewood, a crucial item in the frigid nights.
4. If the sickening waters aren't harsh enough, the banks of this river are riddled with puddles of quicksand!
5. The top of the canyon is a good strategic position for picking off other tributes, but also the home of two warring tribes and several starving coyotes that have developed a strange taste for human flesh.
6. Like all fields, the arena is surrounded by a field to keep our tributes safely in and others safely out.
Well, that looks like all for now! Until next time, this is Tullia, signing off.
((Ahem. The 'tribes' mentioned are actually Avoxes promised freedom to return to their district if they make it through the games and bloody up a few tributes. They are all equipped with a vial of poison in their necks that will kill them if they try to help the tributes or become too good at killing them, and will kill them at the Games' end. The Capitol fights dirty. The caves are marked with Xs; the lower ones contain snakes, the middle one have water, the highest are coyote dens.
Naturally, Tributes know NONE of this when they come into the arena.))

Soooo....I've never read the books. I haven't even seen the movie, and there's a chance I won't actually joine. (Teenagers fighting and killing each other isn't really my thing.) But...what exactly are the districts for and about and such?

Erratic Rhapsody Soooo....I've never read the books. I haven't even seen the movie, and there's a chance I won't actually joine. (Teenagers fighting and killing each other isn't really my thing.) But...what exactly are the districts for and about and such? Mkay, let me see if I can explain, lol. The nation in the book, Panem, is a sort of communist/socialist dictatorship. It is divided into twelve regions, called districts. They're sort of like really big states, except it is illegal to move between them. Each district is assigned a particular industry and is expected to produce enough to split among the whole country. For example, the main character Katniss lives in District 12. 12's purpose is coal mining. Therefore, the majority of its population is coal miners (or married to coal miners). Most of the coal they take from the mine is taken to the ruling region, the Capitol to be distributed to the rest of the nation. I hope that helps.

The country is really a cross between communist Russia and ancient Rome. The Games are considered entertainment to the spoiled, upper class citizens of the Capitol, but forced to be viewed in the lower class Districts as a reminder who has the 'divine right', so to speak. The Capitol people fritter away their time on fashion and frivolity while most Districts barely eek out a living. A few loyalist districts get preferential treatment while the people who live in District 12 and other poorer districts are seen as subhuman. It's all social commentary, really.
