In ancient times, there existed a being who lived as the guardian of the galaxy. Infinitely powerful, she was all that was needed to protect the planets from outside harm. Life remained relatively peaceful under her care, and her gentle strength became a shield to those who inhabited her galaxy.But she grew too powerful, and there were none left to challenge her. Her duty became simple, something she accomplished with ease and without hesitation. Deep inside, she could feel her conceit rising. In an effort to remain pure, untainted, she removed the darkness from herself.
But that act caused a new problem.

Sailor Rainbow, the powerful guardian of the galaxy, the unattainable princess, had split her darkness from herself. She remained pure, but that act birthed Black Rainbow, a twin princess. Rainbow could not kill her other half; to do so would be to kill herself. But her power had been reduced by the split, and neither she nor Black Rainbow could gain the advantage over the other.
For centuries, the true princess fought with her other self.
Black Rainbow was just as clever as the true princess, and knew that she could not destroy her without consequences. So she devised a plan and struck when the time was right. She spent an age gathering energy from the youma, the demon race that haunted the galaxies. Powerful youma had been driven from the planets by Sailor Rainbow in her prime, but the shadows, the weaklings, still remained. Black Rainbow took them in, biding their time until they had stored enough energy to trap Rainbow once and for all.
In a last desperate attempt, as the walls of her prison closed around her, Rainbow released her power. It split into eight fragments, eight colors, and descended upon Earth, falling among the race that she had cared for. She whispered a phrase to the fragments, one that Black Rainbow could not hear, and succumbed to the evil one's trap. In her rage, some of Black Rainbow's power fragmented off as well, the pieces joining the others on Earth before she could recall them.

Rainbow's power, pure and alive, split into numerous different shapes, becoming small charms and gems that would pass her abilities on to new protectors. Black Rainbow's power, dark and angry, split into stone circles, relics that might one day lead to her undoing. Relics that could be unlocked by those with a matching power. For as different as they were now, the two princesses were once one in the same, and their powers were mirrors of each other. A red cross. An orange wing. A yellow sun. A green leaf. A blue trident. A violet moon. A white tempest. A black _. These items fell among the humans of Earth, and Black Rainbow was desperate to seize them. Sending out the youma under her control, they began to comb the globe, searching for the area where the fragments had dropped. A single fragment was found quickly, Rainbow's black _. It had already taken root in a girl, a young woman by the name of Morcinna Alaknadia. The power could not be removed, so Black Rainbow sent one of her more intelligent minions, an imp, to the girl to prompt her transformation into Sailor Black and to sway her thoughts away from the true princess. If the power could not be removed once rooted, Black Rainbow surmised, than she would gather those that it attached to and have them collect the remaining fragments for her and her youma. After some time, Sailor Black and the youma she had named Ebony were able to find the second fragment that had taken root. This one was Rainbow's white tempest, and its power had fallen to a girl named Crystal Brown. Sailor White joined Sailor Black, the two senshi being encouraged by Ebony to vanquish youma. Little did they know that they were playing right into Black Rainbow's hands. The false princess was using them, claiming that she had imprisoned the evil leader of the youma, and that the job of the senshi was to keep this evil one trapped. Rainbow's whispers did not go unheard, however. The soft phrases she had crooned to the fragments of her power before releasing them to Earth had manifested inside Sailor White. The young girl began to have dreams, dreams where the true princess called her and begged for help. It was enough to put doubt into Sailor White's mind, and she and Sailor Black fought before going their separate ways, each to fight youma and search for their remaining companions. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the world, Rainbow's six remaining fragments were finding their way into the hands of the senshi that could use them. Black Rainbow's relics, however had disappeared. The youma could find no trace of their master's power.
The two awakened senshi had split, one in pursuit of Rainbow, one manipulated by Black Rainbow. The paths ahead of them, though different now, would eventually cross. The truth, for better or worse, would eventually be revealed.
