Heart of Shadows
"Ryuujin, I did something terrible." I said to my older twin brother Ryuujin.
"What is it? It can't be that bad Ryo!" He stated.
"I almost destroyed a town. I hurt a lot of people." I replied with sadness to my voice which, he picked up right away.
"Well what do you want to do? Anything you want to do and I'll help you out." Ryuujin responded.
"I don't want to hurt anyone else. I need you to seal me before I do something more serious than this." I answered.
Sadness had found a way to his face. At first it didn't seem like he would do the task I had just asked him, but he let out a sigh and agreed to it. So with that I transformed into my Pokémon form and went into the pool beside me. Ryuujin then encased the pool in ice. How did this get so bad? What exactly did I do? Well it all started a year before this on a hot summer day in the Orre Region......
This is the type of day where you'd think everything would go right for a guardian of the sea. All of the sea’s Pokémon were playing as I kept a close eye on their safety. However, on this day a weird fishing boat came out of nowhere. The first thing on the boat I saw was a red "R" on the side of the fishing boat. I thought nothing of it though. Then it started grabbing up the sea Pokémon. 'That's a little strange,' I thought to myself. The boat started floating away.
'This type of behavior, I haven't seen it before. Usually fishing boats take a few Pokémon. Not this many. I'm curious to see where this boat is going.' I thought as I started following that weird boat. Little did I know this was a big mistake. The boat led me all the way to the Johto region where my older twin brother Ryuujin made his home. This is also where we had our first home, Whirl Islands.
I had followed the boat for a few hours getting tired as the current and time went by. Eventually we had gotten to an even weirder place. It was huge and looked pitch black in color. 'Well that's a little weird. I've never saw a building like this before. I have a bad feeling about this.' I thought as I entered the building. I should have just turned around and went back home, but for some reason I couldn’t bring myself to just leave the sea Pokémon here.
Entering the building was a bad idea. I got ambushed as soon as I let my guard down. Pokémon attacks came from every which way. I didn't have any time to react or counter attack. I didn't even have enough to use protect. And in a flash they caught me before I knew what had happened to me. From the mirage of attacks I was forced into my human form.
A few seconds later I was strapped to a table in a place that looked like a lab. 'Oh God. What are they going to do to me in here?' I asked to myself trying to get loose, but it wasn't working too well. "So is this the subject?" An old guy with a lab coat asked. A guy around 40 years of age or so with a Persian by his side answered, "Yes! Now make it a tool for our plans! I'll be in my office! You better not fail me like the scientist working on the Mewtwo Project!" With that they guy left and the scientist let out a sigh of relief. He then proceeded to pull out a piece of metal that read, 'XD-001.'
'What in the world is that for?' I asked myself. The scientist put it around my neck and sent out fire Pokémon to seal it closed. A sharp pain surrounded my neck. The feeling of third degree burn mixed with 100 Beedrills stinging. What this metal thing became my new name for my stay in this awful place.
The next year was the worst ever. Every day I was injected with this weird liquid, I was used as target practiced for these strange Pokémon that had somehow become different, and at the end of the day I was chained into a cold, small, metal box that only had one small window that only showed the other Pokémon getting tortured. Also Team Rocket had moved their base to Kanto. With everything that was going on my heart was filling with shadows. My rage started building and building as each day past. A few months later I had completely changed. I knew nothing but destruction and pain. They had molded me into their own tool. I had become a shadow Pokémon.
Shadow Pokémon: A tool for mass destruction. The most powerful type of Pokémon created by humans. Shadow Pokémon first appeared 100 years ago and were thought to no longer exist. Most of the Shadow Pokémon research was destroyed.
A year had passed since they created what I am now. I was filled with darkness and bitterness towards all humans because this was the first time I interacted (well the little interaction) with humans I had. The day came where I could make my escape. For once since I was caught by team rocket a person who looked different from the rest came into the room I was being held. He wore a red and white shirt with a hat that matched and blue pants to finish his outfit off. This person looked no older than 10 years old. He had a girl with him wearing a white and pink hat with a light blue shirt and a pink skirt. She looked the same age as the guy.
"Don't worry Lugia. Red and I will free you from this horrible place." The girl said.
"Yeah! Just hold on for a few more seconds! Did you get the key Green?" The boy named Red asked.
"Yeah. I have it right here." Green said taking the key out of her bag and handing it to Red. So Red took the key and unlocked the door to the metal box that I was confined to. As soon as that door was opened I flew out of there.
"It looks like Lugia isn't too injured." Green stated as I flew around with my new found freedom.
"Well now that I'm out I know exactly what I'm going to do." I said with all of my rage made me start destroying all of the machines.
"You have to get away Lugia! You can't stay here or Team Rocket will catch you again!" Red told me.
'That's right. Why should I stay here when all humans should get this as well?' I thought not knowing what I was actually thinking. I created a hole in the wall for means of escape. Team Rocket members came in to see what all the commotion was about.
"Seems like they found us out." Green stated
"What are you two doing!? XD-001 is Team Rocket's property!" The Rocket grunt asked.
"Pokémon aren't anyone's property! They're our friends!" Red defended.
"We'll keep this grunt busy. Make your escape Lugia." Green whispered to me.
"You don't have to ask me twice. I'm out of here." I responded as I left through the hole I made earlier. Thinking back now I should have stayed and helped them. I was just so clouded with the shadows they pumped into my heart. As I flew around on the outside for the first time in a year I started destroying everything in sight. People and the Pokémon tried to get away from this mass destruction. Thankfully I didn't hurt anyone. While on my rampage I finally snapped out of what is called shadow mode. I soon realized what I had just done.
Shadow Mode- A state of mind and being of a Shadow Pokémon. In this mode they feel no pain and only think of destruction. Most of a shadow's Pokémon memory of what they did in shadow mode is gone when they turn back to normal.
I was unable to tell when I was going to snap again, or even if I would snap again. I thought to myself, 'I'm a danger to myself and everyone else. There is only one thing to do. I have to seal myself off from the rest of the world.' That's when I flew to my twin brother, who I thought would be at our childhood home.
That is where I was sealed away in a pool covered by ice for seven years. It was just like sleeping for a night though it felt like it would never end. Well at least I can't feel the coldness of the ice. Being sealed just made my rage grow more and more out of control. Well at least I couldn't hurt anyone in this state. So I thought.
7 years passed since I was sealed from the rest of the world. I thought this is how I was going to spend my life. All time was lost to me. And I was hearing random voices when I started waking up from the state. I thought I was going completely nuts. But the voices belonged to my older twin brother Ryuujin, my niece Natsu, my nephew Rai, and the girl I was going to spend my life with Mai.
For some reason they were able to get me to wake up. I still don't know how they were able to. But my first impression to them was going to be the worst possible way ever. When I woke up I had caused a huge tidal wave soaking Rai and Natsu. I guess someone could call that a flashy entrance.
The first words out of my mouth to them were talking to Rai. "Do you ever shut up?" Is what I said as I got out of the water.
“Oh...and he’s rude too” I heard the girl sigh.
I turned my attention to the girl, “Why in the world did you bring an outsider here, let alone a human?! Pathetic.” I spat not realizing I was now in shadow mode.
“Humans pathetic? How on earth are humans pathetic? Humans made you who you are.” The girl answered with anger setting in on her voice.
“Humans did this out of greed and a thirst for power. They’re weak pathetic creatures.” I retorted.
“We just came here to see if we could help...we need you Ryo.” I could see that the girl fought fear to get those words out.
“Why would you need me? I can take team rocket on by myself. I don’t need help! Now get out of here or I won’t go easy on you all.” I stated, with rage building up inside of me.
“No I won’t leave! At least not until you hear me out!” The girl yelled at me.
I don’t know what happened to make me do what I did next. I guess it was all of the rage that had been building up inside me over the past couple of minutes. I turned to the girl and launched one of my attacks straight for her. It would have hit her too…that is if my nephew didn’t jump in the way of the attack.
“Rai! Are you okay?” The girl yelled running over to check if my nephew was okay.
“Yeah Mai I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.” Rai stated to her.
“I warned you to leave. That was a warning shot. Now leave or I’ll fire for real.” I stated.
“Warning shot?! That was a dirty trick!” Rai stated getting up.
“You can’t do that” Natsu stated.
“Watch me.” I retorted.
“You know what? I was wrong. You’re pitiful! To think you used to be a Lugia! Just because a few humans turned you into...you know what you’re a waste of time!” Mai yelled at me.
“You have just proved my point. No real Pokémon trainer would call any Pokémon a waste of time no matter the circumstances.” I retorted. I then proceed to attack again. “I won’t let you hurt my friends!” Natsu warned making my attack come short by letting out an attack of her own. I dodged it easily and attacked her back. She tried to dodge, but was too slow. My attack hit her causing her to get knocked out. “You are all pathetic. I’m not going to waste any more time on you guys.” I stated letting out an attack out on the roof of the cave causing a hole to form.
This was my escape route from Whirl Islands. It seems like I have been running away from my problems for a while, but this time I wasn’t running away at all. Team Rocket was going to go down or they were going to take me out. I was not leaving those Pokémon in Team Rocket’s possession for any longer. I also had a personal score to settle with them. As I flew around this time I didn’t destroy anything. I was just dead set on using all of my power and energy to get rid of Team Rocket. Even if that meant killing myself to do it.
As soon as I got to their base in Johto I let out my strongest attacks. “This is what you created. Do you think you can handle your most powerful weapon turning against you?” I questioned. They responded by sending helicopters on me to destroy me. If they couldn’t use me no one could. The helicopters let out blast after blast. They wouldn’t give me a chance to do any damage. Each blast just felt like a breeze. I couldn’t tell the toll it was taking on my body since I was in shadow mode.
As I started to snap out of shadow mode all of the pain rushed to me at once. It felt like a train had hit me and backed up to see if it just ran something over. This pain made me fall to the ground. That’s when Mai, Natsu, Rai, and Ryuujin showed up with Kazan following close behind.
‘Thank goodness they are alright.’ I thought to myself when I saw them coming to my aid. I stood back up, but my legs were shaking with how much pain I was in.
“He’s going to fall again! He’s in no shape for this!” Mai said in a concerned tone.
‘This girl Mai, seems to be different from the other humans I have met over the years. But what is this feeling I have thinking about her?’ I thought to myself.
Natsu snapped me out of my thoughts by adding, “And if this continues he could be destroyed.”
“You need to stop this now Ryo!” Rai demanded.
“We can help you stop Team Rocket later, but you are injured now! You should come with us!” Mai commented.
“I really don’t have a choice in this matter.” I responded. And then I blacked out.

Soul of Purity
The day after Valentine’s Day, it felt like a train had ran into me. Most of the things that happened yesterday seemed to be a blur. 'Where am I now?' I thought as I woke up. I sat up and looked around. I was in a bedroom. An actual bedroom for once. I tried to stand up, but I was in too much pain. ‘Well so much for thinking it was all a dream.’ I thought. The clock read 9 am. Natsu knocked on the door. “Ryo? Are you up? I need to treat you wounds.” She said. I didn’t answer her. “Well I guess you’re still asleep.” Natsu said as I heard her footsteps fade.
I took another look around the room. It was a nice size with a few windows and two beds. After looking around a third time something caught my eye. A girl with short blonde hair had her head on the bed. She must have been there all night to make sure I was alright. ‘I recognized this girl from last night. I think she said her name was Mai.’ I thought to myself. Then I whispered, “I take it this is your room.” I got up from the bed and transformed into my older form. “Thank you for lending me your bed, but I don’t want to cause any more trouble for you and your friends. I don’t want to burden you any further.” I said keeping my voice down so I wouldn’t wake her up.
The next thing I did was walk over to where she was sleeping, picked her up, put her where I was laying covered her up, and walked out of her room. As I went through the building I saw a few trainers and some ghost Pokémon. “This must be a ghost gym.” I commented to myself keeping my voice down so no one would hear me. I then added, “Or it’s one of those haunted places that are around. But I’m almost sure this is a gym.” When the trainers were out of sight I continued to walk through the gym. ‘Oh shoot. I forgot I’m still in my older form. I need to change back.’ I thought changing back. I then started walking out again. I made sure no one saw me. So why did I did I have the feeling I was being followed?
“Gengar!” I heard from behind me, so I spun around to see where it was. No sign of it. I started walking again. Then I felt a tug on my coat. I turned around again. No one was there. I shook my head. ‘Am I just imagining things?’ I questioned myself. “Gen gengar gar gengar?” It asked popping out of my shadow. I stumbled backwards falling to the ground. My heart was racing. “N-no…. I’m not…. And please never do that again…. You nearly scared me to death….” I replied to it. Judging from the voice and size it was a male Gengar.
He just stood there laughing at me. Kind of like he enjoyed scaring me. I let out a sigh and pet him. I knew it was just trying to play. “I can’t play right now. I have to go.” I stated. Gengar gave me a sad look and then disappeared as quick as it appeared. I just hope he wasn’t going to go tell his trainer he saw me. After the meeting with Gengar I quickly found myself at the exit of the gym. So I went out and into a city. Etreak city at that. It looked like nothing had changed in the last 100 years. It was nice to see a town that hadn’t changed at all since I was in Johto last. I walked around for a little and decided it was time to leave. A person that resembled a Mewtwo came over to me.
The tattoo on his arm made me recognize him right away. Yue, the Mewtwo that was created by Team Rocket. He stared at with with such a cold look.
“You have to come with me right away.” He said.
“You’re joking, right? I just got my freedom from Team Rocket. I’m not going back,” I replied.
“I’m not leaving without you.”
“Well I’m not going.”
“You’re coming one way or another.”
“And who’s going to make me?”
“I will have to.”
He starts attacking me. Every blow he delivered hit me. I was in too much pain from yesterday to do anything. And I didn’t have enough strength to revert to shadow mode for protection. I was just like a practice dummy to him. Each time he attacked me the pain got worse. It was unbearable. I collapsed without giving a single shot. My version started to get blurry. I couldn’t take much more of this. When Yue went in for what seemed like a finishing blow a streak of lightening came out of nowhere. Yue and I both looked to see where it came from. “Man, you seriously get into a lot of trouble without someone keeping an eye on you!” He joked. That was the last thing I heard before passing out.
When I woke up I found myself in Mai’s room again. “I seem to have a knack for getting hurt and waking up in Mai’s room.” I said to myself sitting up. From the other room I could hear a part to a conversation,
“Yep, he’s waking up, well should be waking up now!” Rai stated.
There was a knocked on the door.
“Ryo? Are you awake?” Mai asked knocking the door.
“Yeah...” I answered.
“Can I come in?” She asked.
“Sure...” I answered.
She opened the door and made her way in asking, “Are you feeling any better?”
“I guess...” I responded.
“How did you pass out?” She asked for some reason.
“I don’t know...” I responded again. I didn’t want her worrying so I made it seem like I didn’t know anything.
“Do you remember where you were before you passed out? And do you need anything?” She asked concerned.
“No and no.” I answered.
“Oh, okay...are you in pain?” She asked.
“Some...” I added.
I hoped I wasn’t seeming rude to her for not answering her questions even though I did know the answers. I didn’t want her to get involved with me.
“Are you sure you don’t need anything?” She asked as concern crept into her voice.
“Yeah.....I’m sure....” I answered again more nervously this time.
“Okay...if you’re sure.” She stated trailing off.
“Well...there is one......never mind...” I started.
I started to get hungry, but it would sound rude if I asked for food after I was a jerk to her and her friends.
“What is it Ryo?” She asked.
“Well............I am.......kind of hungry..........” I stated looking away from her.
“Well what would you like to eat?” She asked.
“Anything is good with me...” I stated.
I didn’t want to ask for anything special to give her more work just for me.
“Alright! Just wait here and I’ll go and make something for you!” She stated leaving her room and heading to the kitchen.
I felt a little lonely now that she was gone. And as far as first impressions go mine seemed the worse. I seemed like a jerk and now I had the guts to ask her for food? And asking for food was the first full sentence that came out of my mouth? She’s not going to like me any.

Pokémon Mystery Dudgeon: Explorers of Sea
On a warm spring day in Johto Mai, Natsu, Michael, and I were walking around Azleaf Forest because our friends Kimi (Celebi) and Atsumi (Pink Celebi) had called on us for something important. They didn’t tell us what was so important though. They just wanted us to drop everything and come as soon as possible.
“What do you think is so important?” Natsu had asked.
“I’m not sure, but I guess we’ll find out shortly!” Michael replied.
“That’s true. It sounded really bad though with how much they were panicking.” Mai said with a concerned tone to her voice.
“It should be just fine, don’t worry Mai. No matter what it is I’ll protect you guys.” I stated trying to calm everyone down not showing how worried I really was.
It didn’t take long to get to the shrine we were told to meet Kimi and Atsumi at and right away you could tell something was terribly wrong.
“What took you guys so long!?” Kimi questioned.
“Sorry about that! We weren’t very close to Johto!” Michael apologized.
“It’s quite alright. That couldn’t be helped.” Atsumi said.
“So what’s so important?” Mai asked.
“Well, the timeline is being messed up!” Kimi answered.
“So you need us to fix it? How are we supposed to do that? And are you two going to help?” I questioned.
“Well the only way we can help is sending you in time. Beyond that is something we are not able to do. We cannot meddle in time, but can send people in time.” Atsumi answered.
“I guess we’ll do it then. It shouldn’t be that hard.” Natsu added.
“Prepare to time travel because that’s what is about to happen!” Kimi warned. So I grabbed Mai’s hand. I didn’t want her to get separated from me considering we have never done this before. Atsumi and Kimi started glowing with a bright blinding light, so we all closed our eyes and with that we vanished.
When Michael and I opened our eyes Mai and Natsu were nowhere to be seen. I started panicking.
“Where’s Mai? Where’s Natsu? What happened?” I asked.
“Ryo, just calm down! I’m sure they’re alright! We just have to find them.” Michael responded. A rock came out of nowhere hitting me in the head.
“Where did the rock come from?” I questioned looking back to where the rock came from. Standing there was a blue and white Pokémon. Probably a water type.
“Well I’m sure that was unexpected to you!” The water Pokémon said.
I started walking over to it. “What the hell was that about?” I asked it. It started to coward and bowing.
“Ryo, you have to calm down! It’s just a water Pokémon!” Michael stated.
“Look I’m really sorry! I didn’t mean it! It was just an accident! Please don’t hurt me Lugia!” It begged.
“We aren’t going to hurt you, …………….. Umm………….. What’s your name?” Michael asked changing the subject.
“I’m Aqua the Oshawott! And really? You’re not going to hurt me?” Aqua questioned.
“No, we aren’t going to hurt you. You have nothing to worry about.” I responded.
“Oh! Ok! So how did you guys get here? I’ve never saw your faces around before!” Aqua stated.
“Well…….. We aren’t sure. But we got separated from our friends.” Michael replied.
“We should go and find them now. It was nice meeting you Aqua.” I added.
“Wait! You don’t even know where they are! You two should make an exploration team with me! It’ll be easier to find them if they came with you! What do you say?” Aqua said.
“What do you think Ryo? Should we?” Michael questioned me.
“………. I guess so. We don’t really have any options.” I responded.
“That’s great! What should the team be called?” Aqua cheered.
“You can pick Michael.” I stated.
“Well I think you should! You’d make a great leader!” Michael said.
“Yeah! He looks very strong and perfect for the job!” Aqua added.
“Oh, ok. I can try being the team leader. Umm……. And I guess Team Soul.” I said.
“I like that team name! We have to register at Wigglytuff’s guild!” Aqua cheered leading us up the river. So Michael and I followed her.

I woke up the next morning to Rai dancing and singing in the hallway. He seemed so chipper even after what had happened yesterday. I realized that I was in my own bed. I had to wonder how on earth that I got there. Then, I turned my attention to the bed that I put Ryo into last night. To my surprise the bed was empty...my heart started to race...where in the world could that boy have possibly gone? I started to get really worried...he could be getting himself even more hurt. All of these bad thoughts came rushing through my head.
“Natsu, have you seen Ryo? He’s not In the bed that I left him in last night...” I stated walking out of my room.
“No Mai, I haven’t seen him...well not since last night.”Natsu stated.
“Oh...I’m really starting to worry about him...he could be getting hurt...”I sighed.
“I’m sure wherever he is, he’s fine.”Natsu stated.
“Yeah but I can’t help but worry...I mean maybe it was something I said last night...maybe it made him really mad and when he woke up in my room he got even more angry and up and left...”I started rambling.
“Mai...Ryo will be fine. Wherever he is, he will be fine.” Natsu explained.
“Yeah but still...who was I to take him here? I mean I took him away from his home. And away from his safety, he doesn’t even trust me Natsu.” I stated.
“He trusts you...just not that much...and he’s really shy...” Natsu stated.
“He didn’t seem shy last night.” I added.
“Well, he has his own way of expressing being shy.” Natsu finished.
“Well...I just hope that he’s okay...I don’t want him to get any more hurt.” I sighed.
“He will be Mai. Don’t worry.”Natsu stated.
We must have waited there for him to show up for over three hours. And each hour that passed made me worry more. He only seemed to be about thirteen...he could be really hurt...or team rocket could get him again. All of this fear was erased out of my head by the screams of Rai.
“Mai, Natsu are you guys still here?!” I heard Rai call from outside.
“Yeah we are. Why what’s wrong?!” Natsu and I called out rushing outside to see what was wrong.
“I was out taking a walk when I found him knocked out on the path...” Rai stated gesturing to the sleeping figure that he was carrying.
“Ryo! He’s okay then?” I gasped in relief.
“He should be...he probably fainted because he tried too hard and his injuries took their toll.” Rai started. “Now where should I put him so he can sleep?” Rai finished.
“Thank god he’s alright! And you can just put him into my room in my extra bed. That’s where he was last night.” I stated.
“See Mai...he’s fine. I told you that there was nothing to worry about.” Natsu stated.
“Yeah...I was just worried...and he could have been hurt...I was just so worried.” I sighed.
Then Rai came back just to talk to us.
“I put Ryo into the extra bed in your room. He seemed like he was coming to and was waking up.” Rai stated.
“Thanks Rai. You’re a darling!” I stated.
“You were really worried about him weren’t you?” Rai asked me.
“Yeah...I just wish that he trusted me and liked me more...” I sighed.
“Well...you could always try talking to him...or staying with him for a while.” Rai and Natsu stated.
“Yeah I could always do that! You said he was up right?” I asked Rai just to be sure.
“Yep, he’s waking up, well should be waking up now!” Rai stated.
I walked to my room and knocked on the door.
“Ryo? Are you awake?” I asked knocking on my door.
“Yeah...” I heard him answer.
“Can I come in?” I asked.
“Sure...”Ryo answered.

I quickly made my way down to the kitchen calling out for help the second that I hit the kitchen door.
“Natsu?! Natsu can you please come help me in the kitchen?!” I yelled trying to get her attention.
“Sure...what exactly do you need help with Mai?” Natsu asked coming through the door.
“Ryo said that he was hungry...he said it didn’t matter what I made him. So I need help cooking.” I stated.
“Okay then let’s get started. How about we just make him a stew then?” Natsu stated.
“Sure! So we need beef, broth, and vegetables.” I stated.
“Alright so what do you want to work on the beef, broth , or the vegetables?”Natsu asked me.
“I’ll work on the beef. The broth is in the fridge. So could you please work on the vegetables?” I asked.
“Okay Mai! This should be really easy.” Natsu stated starting to cut up the vegetables.
“I hope he’ll like this...”I stated starting to cube the beef.
“I’ve been meaning to ask this since last night...do you love him Mai?” Natsu asked.
“Love him...yes...I do...I’m starting to believe that this feeling that I’ve had all along for him was love and admiration. Please don’t tell anyone Natsu!” I stated.
“Oh ok. I won’t tell a soul Mai...why do you admire him Mai?” Natsu asked.
“He’s strong...he had the strength to come back from it all even though he was treated so cruelly. And, he has the strength to start to try and trust people again.” I stated finishing up the last piece of beef.

Explorers of Sea: Mai's pov By Ella0117
When Natsu and I opened our eyes we were on a beach, and although it was beautiful Natsu and I were completely alone. Ryo and Michael were nowhere to be found.
“Ryo….he’s probably panicking now….Natsu? Where on earth are we?” I asked looking around.
“I have no idea….all I know is that we somehow got separated and are on some beach somewhere in the past.” Natsu commented.
“Great….no sign of anyone……they could have at least told us how far they were sending us back….just so that we were aware…” I sighed. “Wait over there…..there’s a Pokémon on the sand over there….it looks like it’s knocked out…” I stated dragging Natsu over to the Pokémon.
There were no signs of movement from the Pokémon. It was just lying there….it was almost like the poor thing had passed on….but then it moved….it jumped up and started to have what seemed to be one of Ryo’s little panic attacks.
“Wh-Who are you two!? Wh-Where am I? I’ve never seen Pokémon like you two before in real life….only in legends!” The Pokémon shouted.
‘Pokemon? We’re humans….what is this pokemon going on about?’
“Umm…..we’re humans….” Natsu stated.
“No you’re not! You are pokemon! Legendries too!” The pokemon yelled again.
“Oh no…..Kimi and Atsumi must have turned us into our pokemon forms when they sent us here…..” I gasped.
“So…..what are your names?” The pokemon asked ignoring the last part of my previous statement.
“My name is Natsu. And this is Mai.” Natsu stated greeting the lost pokemon.
Then the pokemon busted out into a fit of laughter….I really didn’t see what was so funny. Then the pokemon enlightened us to why he was laughing.
“Those are funny names! I’ve never heard of ones like those before!” The pokemon stated gasping for air.
“Well would you kindly tell us what your name is?” I asked.
“My name is Volt! I’m a shinx!” The pokemon stated.
Then the pokemon started laughing again….and continued for about another ten or so minutes. Then when he stopped he asked us more questions. He seemed like he needed to know everything.
“So…why are you two here anyway…? Are you both lost?” Volt asked.
“We just got separated from our friends. And we ended up here.” Natsu stated.
“We could ask you the same question Volt.” I stated.
“Me? Well the last thing that I remember is going to Wigglytuff’s guild….and I got attacked there…and that’s how I ended up on this beach….” Volt stated deep in thought.
“That seems horrible…who would beat you up?” I asked.
“See that’s what I don’t know.” Volt answered.
“Um….what exactly is Wigglytuff’s guild?” Natsu asked.
“You don’t know?! It’s the training place for all of the exploration teams!” Volt nearly screamed.
“Exploration teams? What is that?” I asked.
“You don’t know what they are either?! An exploration team is a team of pokemon that helps others with mysteries, and quests, and requests! It’s pretty amazing!” Volt explained.
“Sounds pretty interesting.” Natsu added.
“It really does sound amazing….”I stated.
“Oh I know! How about you both make an exploration team with me and we can train at Wigglytuff’s guild. We might even be able to find your friends there!” Volt stated cheerfully.
“That could be the best way to find Ryo and Michael….” Natsu stated.
“I think it’s the only way….” I stated.
“Good! That’s great! So we’re now team……..Team Heart! How does that sound!?” Volt asked.
“It sounds good.” Natsu stated.
“I like it too.” I added.
“Then it’s settled! Team Heart! Let’s head to Wigglytuff’s guild!” Volt exclaimed showing us the way to the guild.

Valentine’s Day scuffle By Ella0117 I was wishing this day wouldn’t come. But no matter how hard I tried February 14th was bound to come around some time...I just wish it wasn’t so soon. I didn’t really want all the attention that came along with that day. It was just too much, and since Natsu had set up a double date that day there was no way that I could back out of it. And little did I know that this would be one of the most eventful days of my life. I woke up in the morning and looked at the calendar with dread. February 14th, the day where every lover in the world showered their love with many, to the limit of a plethora, of gifts. Every year I had been alone, except this year. This year one of my friends just had to set up a double date. And to top it off my date was with Morty, the gym leader. Now I’m not saying that I don’t like him....no I really did like him. I just wasn’t ready to date him. Then it happened...the knock on my door. “Mai, are you ready to go? We’re keeping the guys waiting!” I heard Natsu call through my door. “I’m coming, I’m coming! We’re meeting them there anyway so can’t you just wait a couple more seconds?” I called back. “I’ve been waiting here for the past ten minutes! I don’t want to keep them waiting much longer. Eusine just called your pokegear to tell us that they were already there!” Natsu called back again. “Alright, I’m here...so why exactly do you have my pokegear?” I asked opening the door. “You gave it to me so that I could call them if we were going to be running late. Which I already did...so let’s go!” Natsu stated grabbing my arm and pulling me off. We must have walked for over fifteen minutes before I started to wonder where exactly we were supposed to be meeting the guys. No one told me any information. All they told me was to meet Natsu and that she would take me to where we were supposed to me them. I was never told anything about any subject matter anymore. “And, here we are Mai!” Natsu stated turning my attention toward the city that we were in. “Olivine, why are we in Olivine?” I asked confused. “The guys said that they were going to take us to the restaurant here. It was their Valentines gift to us!” Natsu said. “Oh by the way there they are over there. Let’s go!” Natsu pointed, “Okay, okay I’m coming!” I yelled going after Natsu. “Well hello you two. What took you both so long?” Eusine asked smirking. “I don’t know Eusine...maybe we saw a Suicune...I had to get ready you know?” I stated sarcastically. “Anyway...before you two bite each other’s heads off, why don’t we start heading inside?” Morty asked us. Natsu didn’t answer that question, which was strange. I thought that she would be the first one to jump at answering that question. But she just stood there in silence. “Natsu, is something wrong?” I asked nervously. “Did anyone else just hear that?” Natsu asked us. “Hear what Natsu?” Eusine asked. “I didn’t hear anything...”Morty responded. “What were we supposed to hear Natsu? Because I did not hear anything unusual.” I responded. “It sounded like someone talking about or to something...guess I’m hearing things. Come on, let’s go inside now!” Natsu said. Little did we know that Natsu did hear someone talking. She just could not put the voice to the person. Although this person was one of her older brothers... ~Rai’s POV~
“Hush...you’re gonna get me in a lot of trouble Jumpluff!” I whispered so that they couldn’t hear me.
“Jump! Jumpluff?” The Jumpluff answered me.
“You seriously need me to run this by you AGAIN?” I sighed. “Just go out there and attack the man in purple!” I responded.
“Jump.” The Jumpluff responded.
“What they’re both wearing purple? Fine...the one wearing the headband!” I finally stated.
“Jump?” The Jumpluff asked.
“What do you mean you don’t understand? You know what just get out of here ok?” I sighed and the Jumpluff left. “I need a Raichu...” I sighed deeper.
~Mai’s POV~
“Okay...now I know I heard something that time...” Natsu stated.
“Natsu...I think that you need to get inside away from out here...” I responded trying to drag Natsu into the restaurant.
“I want to find out what on earth is making that noise so can we just stay out here for a little bit?” Natsu asked again.
“Okay whatever you want to do Natsu.” Eusine stated.
~Rai’s POV~
“Rai, Rai.” Raichu stated finally understanding my directions.
“Good, now go!” I stated pointing the Raichu in the right direction.
Then the Raichu bounded out of the grass and headed straight for Morty. I cheered. But then the Raichu made the worst mistake...It found Eusine...grabbed on to his leg and...
~Mai’s POV~
“Um...guys...something’s coming out of the bushes over there...”I stated pointing at the bushes next to the restaurant.
Just then the creature that was located behind the bushes popped out from behind them. It was a Raichu. The Raichu gleefully made its way towards Morty and myself, but then made a turn to Eusine. It latched on to his leg for some odd reason.
“A Raichu? What in the world is this Pokémon doing out here?” Eusine asked looking at the Pokémon that had taken up residency on his leg.
“Aw, it likes you Eusine!” Natsu stated cheerfully.
That’s when everything took a turn for the worse...the Raichu that was attached to Eusine’s leg decided to shock him...violently...
“Oh my god, Are you okay Eusine!?” We all yelled going over to help him.
“I’m fine...I’m fine...”Eusine stated getting up off the ground as if nothing happened.
~Rai’s POV~
Crap...that wasn’t supposed to happen...now what do I do? I only have one option left. I called a Houndoom to help me out.
“Doom?” The Houndoom asked trying to understand my plan.
“Yes the one in purple with the headband.” I sighed.
Then things went wrong. The Houndoom got extremely mad at me and decided to turn on me. The thing turned around and burned me straight from head to toe...it even hit the Valentine that I was planning on giving Mai later on...this was just turning out to be a bad day.
~Mai’s POV~
“OWWW! BAD HOUNDOOM!”I heard a voice scream from the bush.
Then the surprise of our lives came from behind the bush. Rai came running out of the bushes burned to a crisp. He was in pain and fighting off a Houndoom that seeming tried to give him third degree burns.
“Rai what are you doing here?” I asked confused.
“Who is this?” Morty and Eusine asked in unison.
“If you all excuse me for a moment...I need to have a word with my brother.” Natsu said dragging Rai off.
“Okay...so that was Natsu’s brother?” Eusine asked.
“Yeah...he’s unique...”I sighed.
“He seems it...”Morty stated.
“Yeah...”I sighed again.
“Well, I’m back...Rai said he’d leave us alone until we are ready to go to Whirl island later on tonight. ”Natsu started. “He did tell me to give you this though and tell you Happy Valentine’s day.” Natsu stated handing me a card with a pink rose attached to it.
“That poor thing...this is even burnt...I’ll need to thank him later.” I sighed again.
“Well...how about we finish this date!” Natsu started. “Come on let’s go. “Natsu finished.
We spent another two or three hours in that restaurant. We were talking, laughing and telling stories together. But when it got dark we said our goodbyes and thank you and went to find Rai to head to Whirl Island.
“Are you two finally done with your dates?” Rai asked.
“Yes Rai, now we are done with our double date. Unlike the last time you interrupted us.” Natsu sighed.
“Hey Rai...thank you for the Valentine...it was really beautiful.” I stated blushing.
“You really liked it? Well you’re welcome Mai...” Rai stated trying to hide his blush. “Anyway come on let’s head to Whirl Island.” Rai stated transforming into his Raikou form.
“Alright, I agree with Rai. Let’s head out to the island.” Natsu stated transforming into her Suicune form, “Just choose which one of us that you want to ride.” Natsu stated as her and Rai laid one the ground waiting for me to choose one of them.
“Um...I guess I’ll ride Rai there and Natsu back. That sounds fair enough.” I stated.
“Alright Mai, Hop on then!” Rai stated.
I hopped on to Rai’s back and he and Natsu took off across the water. They were going extremely fast...maybe too fast for me...
“You okay Mai? We’re almost halfway there. I’m not going too fast for you am I?” Rai asked checking on me.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Don’t worry! As long as you get me there in one piece its fine.” I stated.
“Well as long as you’re both okay...How about a race to Whirl Island?” Natsu asked.
“Sure, first one to whirl island wins! Hold on tight Mai!” Rai yelled taking of even faster than before.
“Don’t think that you can show off just because the girl that you like is here!” Natsu yelled seeming to catch up.
This went on for another five or ten minutes before we actually got to the island. And shockingly...Rai won. I really thought that Natsu was going to win with the speed that she was going. But anyway we finally made it to Whirl Island. Now all that was left was to go in and to speak to Ryuujin...and hopefully learn the full truth about Ryo.
“Mai this place is filled with water and twists and turns so just stay on me until we get to Ryuujin’s chambers okay?” Rai stated making his way into the island.
“Gotcha, just tell me when we are at the chamber okay Rai?” I asked.
“We’ll both let you know Mai.” Natsu stated.
“Okay let’s go then.” I stated.
We walked through those islands for over twenty minutes...don’t get me wrong...the place was beautiful. The water looked crystal clear, and the cave itself was crystal clear. Then we stopped in front of an opening inside of the cave.
“Well Mai...here we are. This is Ryuujin’s chambers. You ready to head in?” Rai asked.
“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be Rai. Let’s go you two!” I stated jumping off Rai.
We entered into the chamber to an amazing sight. The chamber was filled with two giant waterfalls, and this beautiful blue light that shined throughout the whole chamber. Then we spotted a man...he turned around and had this strange smile on his face.
“Well...hello...wait...what are you two doing here? And who is the woman that is behind you? She’s an outsider right?” The man asked smiling.
‘Well he’s strange...they didn’t warn me that he was this well unique...’ I thought to myself.
“This is Mai. She’s a friend of ours!” Rai stated.
“She is also our trainer now. She has earned our complete trust Ryuujin.” Natsu stated.
“I still don’t see why you brought a haunter with you...” Ryuujin stated giving me a questioning look.
“Ryu she’s not a haunter! She’s a human! And she’s our best friend!” Rai retorted.
“You mean she’s not a haunter? I was looking forward to getting to talk to a ghost Pokémon.” Ryuujin sighed.
“No sir, I am completely one hundred percent human! I am a gym leader’s assistant and a Pokémon trainer.” I stated.
“So wait...why are you here then?” Ryuujin asked.
“We want to talk to Ryo.” I stated.
“No I highly advise against that...something changed in that boy...he’s not himself...he wants to destroy everything.” Ryuujin warned us.
“But we won’t know until we try sir.” I stated eagerly.
“Call me Ryu please. And I can’t just let my twin brother run rampant again!” Ryuujin stated with a serious look on his face.
“Please let us go in Ryu. Mai is different from other humans! ”Natsu stated giving Ryuujin a puppy dog face.
“.......Fine but don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Ryuujin sighed.
“Thanks Natsu!” Rai stated hugging his sister.
“Thank you Ryu. “I stated smiling.
“You’re welcome Mai. Just take me with you to be safe.” Ryuujin assured us.
“I think that means that he wants to be caught.” Rai stated smiling.
Natsu then seemingly dug through my bag and found one of the pokeballs in my bag and tossed it at me.
“Here’s a dive ball. This should work perfectly for Ryu.” Natsu explained.
“Alright...Let’s hope this works.” I stated throwing the ball. “Tell me if it works.” I stated turning away from the pokeball.
After a few seconds Rai’s voice cut through the silence.
“It worked Mai!” Rai yelled to me.
“Okay.” I stated grabbing the dive ball and releasing Ryu from it. “There you go.” I finished.
“Okay! Follow me to the pool that Ryo is sealed in.”Ryuujin stated starting to lead the way.
“Okay!” The three of us responded.
“It’s in the heart of the cave so be careful. And stay close so no one gets lost.” Ryu stated.
We must have walked another ten minutes throughout the cave. We went through the waterfall and into the heart of the chamber of the cave. In the chamber where Ryo was sealed there was a beautiful crystal waterfall, and a pool of water that seemed to be fogged and was frozen over.
“Just be careful Mai. He hates humans.” Ryu stated
“Don’t worry we’re here to protect Mai!” Rai stated.
“Of Course we are!” Natsu stated as well.
“Thank you both. I’m grateful for both of you.” I stated.
There was complete silence for a few minutes as I took in the sight of the pool and wondered what kind of thing would make someone have to be sealed under a pool of water and ice. Then the silence was broken by Rai.
“Ryu is something wrong...you have not said anything in a long time.” Rai asked.
“I was just thinking...you know Mai seems like a descendant of the great hero.” Ryu stated bluntly.
“WAIT...WHAT?!” I retorted.
“Nothing...I’ll explain later...Natsu! What are you doing out there!? Get back here now!” Ryu yelled.
“He’s just asleep down there...” Natsu stated.
Then the ice started to crack under Natsu’s feet. She fell over the cracked pieces of the ice and almost fell into the water.
“Natsu! You need to be more careful. Ryu told us all to be careful! You could get really hurt!” Rai stated running out and grabbing Natsu.
Then the ice cracked completely. The cracks spread throughout the whole room. I gasped as I saw what came next. A giant wave came out of the ice and hit Natsu and Rai...they got completely soaked. The water seemed cold as well.
“What in the world...?” I asked.
“One word...Ryo...this is his doing...”Ryu stated to me.
“That was a cheap shot Ryo! You wanna fight?! Cause I’m raring and ready to go!” Rai challenged Ryo.
The thing that came out of the water...well Lugia...scared me frozen. He was huge...and menacing...his colors were inverted...his eyes were blood red. And it looked like he had an aeroblast ready to strike Rai...
“Do you ever shut up?” Ryo asked Rai.
“Oh...and he’s rude too” I sighed.
Then is piercing blood red eyes turned to me. “Why in the world did you bring an outsider here, let alone a human?! Pathetic.” Ryo spat.
“Humans pathetic? How on earth are humans pathetic? Humans made you who you are.” I stated with anger setting in on my voice.
“Humans did this out of greed and a thirst for power. They’re weak pathetic creatures.” Ryo retorted.
“We just came here to see if we could help...we need you Ryo.” I fought fear to get those words out.
“Why would you need me? I can take team rocket on by myself. I don’t need help! Now get out of here or I won’t go easy on you all. I’m in no mood to talk.” Ryo stated nastily.
“No I won’t leave! At least not until you hear me out!” I yelled at him.
That was the wrong thing to do...he got even more mad after I yelled at him. He turned all of his attention to me. Then he launched an attack straight at me. It came so close to me. It probably would have hit me...that is if Rai didn’t jump in front of the attack.
“Rai! Are you okay?” I yelled going over to check on him
“Yeah Mai I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.” Rai stated
“I warned you to leave. That was a warning shot. Now leave or I’ll fire for real.” Ryo stated.
“Warning shot?! That was a dirty trick!” Rai stated getting up.
“You can’t do that” Natsu stated.
“Watch me.” Ryo retorted.
“You know what? I was wrong. You’re pitiful! To think you used to be a Lugia! Just because a few humans turned you into...you know what you’re a waste of time!” I yelled.
“You have just proved my point. No real Pokémon trainer would call any Pokémon a waste of time no matter the circumstances.” Ryo retorted.
“I’m not just going to sit here and take this!” Natsu stated launching an attack at Ryo.
Of course he dogged the attack. It was like the attack was nothing to him. Like it didn’t even faze him. Instead he answered with an attack of his own. This time the shot wasn’t a warning. It hit Natsu and knocked her over.
NATSU! ARE YOU OKAY!?” I heard Rai yell as he ran over to check on his sister.
“Well, any real Pokémon would trust a trainer! I feel horrible for what team rocket has done to you! It’s horrible to see any Pokémon treated like this! And Natsu are you alright?” I ask while yelling at Ryo.
“You are all pathetic. I’m not going to waste any more time on you guys.” Ryo stated letting out an attack out on the roof of the cave causing a hole to form.
After he made the hole in the ceiling of the cave he proceeded to leave. No one knew where he was headed. All that we knew was that he was probably headed after team rocket again.
“You know...I am a horrible person...” I stated starting to get a little choked up.
“Mai, you’re not a bad person...don’t let Ryo get to you...he was trying to get you mad and upset...which it seems he did...” Rai stated walking over to me and wiping tears away from my face.
“But he’s right...no real trainer...would e-ever c-call a Pokémon a waste of time...” I stated starting to cry harder.
“You were just mad Mai. Any trainer would be...now come one how about we go and find him before something happens?” Natsu stated hugging me.
I still didn’t understand what made me so upset. The tears that were running down my face weren’t for no reasons were they? I was tearing myself apart from the inside. I didn’t want him to hate me...and being a psychic and being able to see all the things that he went through just by looking at him...no these tears weren’t from the sadness of thinking that he hates me...they’re from...loving Ryo...I didn’t want to admit it to myself...but I think I have fallen in love with him... just from those couple of moments...I needed to find him...to make sure that he was okay and not injured...
“Well come on then let’s go after Ryo! Everyone hop on!” Ryuujin commanded turning into his lugia form and lowering his wing for us.
“You don’t have to tell us twice!” Rai stated.
After we all climbed on Ryuujin he took off out the door after his younger twin. We flew past so many things that I could even tell where exactly in Johto we were. Or if we were even in Johto anymore, then we saw a familiar face.
“Kazan?! Why is he down there?” I asked.
“Oh hey, it’s Kazan!” Ryu stated. “Kazan! What are you up to?” Ryu yelled again.
“Oh...it’s you all. Mai I must apologize for the way that I acted when we first met. That was not very welcoming. I’m highly sorry for my behavior.” Kazan stated.
“It’s fine Kazan. Don’t worry about it!” I stated.
“Okay then. But I want to go with you all. Please allow me to go with you.” Kazan seemed to plead.
“That means that he wants you to catch him Mai.” Natsu started. “Here this is a heavy ball. It should work perfectly on him.” Natsu stated throwing me the ball.
“Okay...someone tell me if this works...” I stated throwing the heavy ball towards Kazan.
After a few seconds I heard Ryuujin call out.
“It’s good Mai. It worked.” Ryuujin called.
“Good!” I stated picking up the heavy ball and releasing Kazan. “Thank you for your help Kazan.” I finished.
“Don’t mention it Mai. Now where are you all headed?” Kazan asked.
“Oh shoot we completely forgot about Ryo...We’re going after him before he gets hurt.” Ryuujin stated.
‘How does someone forget about their own brother?...questionable...’
“Anyway we should probably get back on track and find Ryo. So let’s go!” I called out climbing back onto Ryuujin.
Sure enough after a few seconds were back to flying, Kazan was following behind us on the ground. He said it was so that we could have an extra set of eyes on the lookout.
“You know I think we should go a little faster...it feels like something bad is going to happen...” Natsu stated.
“What do you mean bad?” I asked.
“I mean that he’s going to get hurt...” Natsu answered.
Not too long after Natsu made that statement we heard an explosion. That was the most horrifying noise that I have ever heard. It scared me even more. Ryo was getting hurt and I wasn’t there to help him...
“The noise came from this way!” Ryuujin stated flying in the direction of the explosion.
We got to the sight of the explosion a little too late though...we all hopped off of Ryuujin and made a run as soon as we saw Ryo. He was lying on the ground in a horrible state...it seems that this was team rockets doing. He seemed to be hurt beyond the point of moving....but then he did the impossible... He stood back up, but his legs were shaking with how much pain he was in.
“He’s going to fall again! He’s in no shape for this!” I said in a concerned tone.
Then he seemed lost in thought. For someone that was so easy to read, now I had no idea what he was thinking or what he was feeling...it was strange...
Natsu seemed to snap him out of his thoughts by adding, “And if this continues he could be destroyed.”
“You need to stop this now Ryo!” Rai demanded.
“We can help you stop Team Rocket later, but you are injured now! You should come with us!” I commented.
“I really don’t have a choice in this matter.” Ryo responded. And then he blacked out.
“He’s really hurt...we need to get him to a Pokémon center...” I explained with hurt in my voice.
“We will Mai...but first you need to catch him.” Natsu stated tossing me a premium ball.
“What in the world is this Natsu?” I asked her.
“It’s a premium ball. It’s perfect for Ryo.” Natsu stated.
“Thank you Natsu.” I stated tossing the premium ball at Ryo.
“And...........It’s done.” Rai called out.
“Good! Now let’s get him to a Pokémon center quick.” I stated.
“Well Kazan and I will be taking our leave now...we’ll see each other again. Just take good care of my brother until then okay Mai?”Ryuujin stated.
“Of course I will Ryuujin. Your brother’s in good hands with me.” I stated.
And with that both Ryuujin and Kazan took their leave. It seemed so quiet without Ryuujin around. But enough about that we had other things to worry about, like getting Ryo healed.
“Thankfully were near Ecruteak...we should be able to get him healed quickly.” Rai stated.
“Yeah...do you two want to be healed too...I mean you both took a beating from him...” I stated.
“Sure that would be nice!” Natsu and Rai stated.
So then I returned them to their pokeballs, and headed to the Pokémon center. When I entered I handed Rai, Natsu, and Ryo’s pokeballs to the nurse. She took them to the back and came out a few seconds later and handed the pokeballs back to me. I thanked her and made my way to the gym. And when I reached the gym I let Rai and Natsu out of their pokeballs.
“Thank you Mai! I feel much better now.” Rai started. “I’m gonna head to my room now. Good night and see you tomorrow. Oh and happy Valentine’s Day Mai.” Rai finished leaving and making his way to his room in the gym.
“Well we all should get some sleep. Good night Mai. I’ll talk to you tomorrow morning. And like Rai said...Happy Valentine’s day.” Natsu stated making her way to her room in the gym.
After they both left I paused in thought for a couple of minutes. Then, I let Ryo out of his pokeball. He was so hurt that he was forced into his human form after I let him out.
‘I’m not about to let him stay in that cramped pokeball all night long...I just hope he doesn’t mind staying in my room...’
I took Ryo to my room and laid him on the extra bed that I had. I tucked him in to bed and then proceeded to go to sleep myself.
