Been working on this for a while. This is just part of the first chapter. Hope you all like it ~_~'
6 Years Ago… “Give me a hug. It’s not like I’m gonna wilt away or anything.” Said Emma’s mother as she sat down in her rocking chair. It was her favorite place to be in the small, abandoned house. Emma walked up to her mother and gave her a hug. She couldn’t believe it. She was almost skin and bones. Her mother grabbed her tight in a warm embrace, almost like she was going to lose her. Emma went to leave the embrace, but her mother held her tighter. “Listen. Whatever you do, don’t be afraid.” Is what she whispered in her small 11 year old ear.
1.
Present Day… Emma worked diligently, cleaning up bedrooms and emptying bed pans. It was her shift at “A Brighter Day” Nursing home. She had been working there for a year now. She was trying to save up money so she could get the hell out of her town. Everything about her town made her hate it. The fact that the government didn’t care about the condition of the town. The way that the people were treated like s**t. As far as she was concerned, Eastfield was a white-trash dump. Emma went to South Valley High, which is located in Green Forest Heights. Every rich snobby kid goes there. What made things worse was the fact that she couldn’t afford any of the trendy clothes that the girls wore, which meant no Forever21 or Dillards. This made kids at her school hate her. But her mother wanted Emma to have the best quality education she could possibly get, so even though Emma protested time and time again, she forced her to go to the snob school overpopulated with kids who didn’t even care about her existence. Emma checked out of shift and said good bye to the nurses. She then walked outside and waited for her ride. A couple minutes later a blue jeep parked outside. It was her friend Selena. Emma was taking her time, so Selena playfully honked her horn. Emma walked up faster. “Jeez Louise, grandma. What were you doing?” she asked. “Taking my time.” Emma replied in a flat tone. “Can we stop at the hospital right quick? I wanna see my mom.” She said. Selena nodded. She felt sorry for Emma, especially since they found out 6 years ago that her mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. After that, Emma’s mom tried her best to take care of Emma, but she really needed to take care of herself. From that point on she was sent to the hospital and Emma was in her father’s care. Her father regularly abused her for 3 years. She then decided to become emancipated and live by herself. They arrived at the hospital. Emma and Selena checked in and got the current room number (because she had to be moved to different room a couple of times due to the fact that she couldn’t have a roommate with chemotherapy and all). They took the elevator in silence. When they got to her room Emma’s mother was doing her daily round of therapy. When the male doctor saw them, he smiled towards Emma. “She was just talking about you.” He said, and left them alone in the white room. Emma had always hated the smell of hospitals. “Girls! I’m so glad to see you.” Emma’s mom said with a wry smile. Selena and Emma gave her a hug at the same time. “I wouldn’t miss seeing you for the world, Ms. Andrews. How has everything been?” Selena asked. “Well you know, things are getting pretty better. My chemo is going well. They say I’ll be off of it in a couple of weeks.” She said, beaming almost. She was extremely happy since she had been battling cancer for 6 years. This was the relief that everyone needed. They all talked for some time. Emma hadn’t talked to her mom in a couple of weeks. It was her senior year and she had a lot of tests that were kicking her a**. Emma looked at the clock. It was 9:58. Oh s**t she thought. “We gotta go, mom. School in the morning.” Emma announced. She rose up from her seat and Selena followed. “Wait! Before you go, I have to give you something.” She said. She reached for her small drawer next to her bed and pulled out a small wooden box. There were small stars carved in it. “Open it.” Emma opened the box and found a beautiful old style necklace. The lining was thin and silver, and there was a dazzling purple-ish blue stone. “This is beautiful.” She managed to say. Mrs. Andrews smiled. “I know. It’s a family air loom, passed down from generation to generation. Your grandmother gave it to me, and her mother gave it to her.” Emma was totally enamored in the necklace’s beauty. It was almost as if she couldn’t take her eyes off of it, literally. “Wow, it’s gorgeous!” Selena exclaimed trying to get a better look at it. “I want you to remember something,” Mrs. Andrews started, “Take care of that amulet. I mean it, Em. Whatever you do, don’t lose it. I—You wouldn’t want it to end up in the wrong hands.” Her tone completely changed. Emma looked up, almost startled. What was her mom trying to say? “Relax, mom. It’s not like somebody’s after it or something. It’s just a necklace. But thanks anyway. I’ll call you later.” Emma said, brushing a long strand of her silky mocha colored hair out of her face. Just then, her cell phone rang. It was one of the few friends she had at school. As Emma and Selena left, Mrs. Andrews struggled to let out the words “I Love You”. They came out in a small whisper, but by that time Emma was already out the door and laughing with her friend.
