Now let's cover some of the basics of role-playing starting with...
The rules!

Yes this is the more boring part of the guide, feel free to skip it if you feel like you already have a firm grasp of the rules and why you should obey them.

For those of you who stayed let's move on.

The rules are like the instruction manual and info booklet that you get with a video game. Yeah very few people read them, but if you did you’d be surprise at some of the info provided. Personally I’ve managed to figure out that a game was going to be crap just from reading the instructions. I managed to trade it in the next day and get more money back before the sucky backlash lowered the trade-in value.

Anyhow personal stories aside the rules of a RP will help you to realize if that is the RP for you.

The Rules

All RPs within Gaia has a basic set of rules and most of them are rather common; these rules were made for the sake that everyone has fun and also that no one makes the careless mistake of violating the Gaia Online TOS and Rules & Guidelines. This is rather important because about 5% of users actually takes the time to read the TOS and Rules & Guidelines before clicking ‘agree‘ to start their account. In all honesty the TOS and R&G of Gaia really aren’t that long of a read in comparison to others.

Violating these rules will not only get you in trouble but it might come back on the entire guild, this is one of the reasons that there is a need for mods. They maintain order and regulations for everyone.

Also by knowing them you can find loopholes that helps you to get away with things that are borderline violations.

Two rules will always be present in all RPs on Gaia no matter where you go:
-No godmodding
-No Cybering

Naughty Johnny!

But in a wrestling RP one that you may or may not see is:

-No reals/cannon characters.
If you are new to the RP game that means you can only submit characters of your own creation, no one who is an actual character used in the show or what have you that the RP might be based upon.

So in a wrestling RP that means that you cannot be AJ Styles, Mysterio, Candy Apple, Cena, HBK, and so on. But that doesn’t mean that in a character totally unrelated to wrestling can’t be used. For example you submit Batman for some reason into the WWE; it might be allowed but you’ll have to tweak his fighting style and take away his toys in ring.

Why can't you use reals? Ask that around the right people and you'll get an earful of reasons why which can spark a heated debate, but for now I'll just give you a few reasons why most wrestling RPs forbid them.

-There could be a fight between RPers to be one real.
Many people don’t pay attention to the profile list and they’ll excitedly slap out profile for a CM Punk or a Jeff Hardy although there is one already around.

-Unoriginality.
While making your own characters calls for some thought and creativity using an original character takes that away. Too often we see people submit a cut and paste profile from one of the many wikis that are about. Not only is that unoriginal but it’s lazy.

-Being a real has its burden of portraying that character as they are on the show.
Meaning you will be called on for any out of character actions people feel that person would never do even if you have painstakingly explained that the person, say Hulk Hogan, went through a major heel turn and now likes to trip pregnant women and punch children in the arm.

-Continuity (I cannot say that without thinking of the song).
Continuity is the main reason most RPs do not allow for reals to be used. Continuity is the consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the reader or viewer over some period of time.

Now if one person was playing the part of Jeff Hardy in a RP and then decided to quit vacating that character and then someone else picks him up the continuity of the RP is now messed up.

It is not fair to give the new person using Jeff Hardy the credit and history of the pervious. Let’s say that the previous one had left while holding a title belt and dating the assistant to the general manager of the show. The new one cannot simply pick up and have all that they have not earned. They must start anew and all of the players must forget about the old Jeff Hardy character as if he and the interactions they had with him never existed.

Basically the old Jeff Hardy will get the Chris Beniot/Matt Hardy treatment. No one is allowed to mention him even though there are records of them and their past actions.

One more, and then we are done with this section. Hell I think you can skip this last one as it’s not really a pressing issue and I don't see this applying here too often.

One rule you might see but is never explained is:
-No all caps

Some people do not understand or care to understand why this is an important rule to obey.

It’s understandable that sometimes people make mistakes, they get excited and type quickly and their finger is still on the shift or they think that by using all caps they are relaying excitement or extreme anger.

Really a simple exclamation point, changing the color, or bolding the word will have the same if not better impact.

In most cases people just think that it’s viewed as spam.

But this is just speculation no one really ever bothers to explain why you shouldn’t use all caps. I know that no one had really explained it to me until I joined a game with a chat community.

Believe it or not people who are blind, partially blind, dyslexic and functioning illiterate do use the internet. To get by these people use a reader, a reader will read the words aloud to these people in a computerized voice so that they know what had been typed.

Unfortunately when it comes to words that are all capitalized the reader will practically scream/screech the word to that person. And given that most people who uses a reader wears a headphone with them that word is being screeched right into their ear.

For most readers this function cannot be turned off. And for the blind they cannot afford to turn it off say for instance a relative can only contact them via the net and they have something very important to tell them in an e-mail, to relay the importance of this they will put the message in all caps to get the attention of the blind person.
Now this isn’t always the case so just look out and see if the rules have this one listed.

Congratulations you are now done with this part of the guide. Have a cupcake yum_cupcake
