It hadn't been easy for Uwasa to learn that her father had produced other children before her. It had been even harder to come to terms with the fact that her fathers and her enigmatic uncle had all been killers not too long before she had entered the world. Uwasa lay in the grassy field north of the running horse lake. The tip of her tail beat out a slow and steady rhythm against the ground as she thought. She hadn't been able to think while she was at home, she was too close to everything there, so she had slipped out quietly before dawn. Naturally Nichi had followed her but at least the fox was keeping quiet off by the river.

Uwasa took in a deep, soothing breath and looked to the sky reflecting on the moments of that day. Their markings had been so similar to her own, that had drawn her in. Thinking back on it now she understood that perfectly. It wasn't just a shared history, they shared a father in a sense. She was old enough to understand that biologically Torao was her only father but that would never change the fact that Hisoka was her father in every other way. She closed her eyes and took another breath. It was hard to focus on what was important when her thoughts kept drifting to other points.

She opened her eyes again and focused her mind back on her siblings. They had both been as strange in appearance as she was. Her brother even shared her fangs even though his were substantially larger. Her sister shared her fuzzy ears though Uwasa's were smaller and less like a canine's. What else were her dads hiding from her? They both looked like normal stallions but they didn't act it. They had been predators and not pray for many years. Was there something hidden deep inside of them that was able to surface in their offspring? Some demon or evil spirit? Uwasa had heard all the tales of demons, ghosts, gods and spirit beasts, could she be related to one?

Uwasa shook her head with a somewhat forced smile. No. That wasn't right. That was silly. She stared into the deep blue of the sky. Wasn't it?

Things had not gone quite the way Nexus had expected with his little bet with Cain. The first mare had turned out to be a psycho-b***h that needed to be put down. Neither he nor Cain had expected events to unfold the way they had. There had been a fight, two on one, and she had just refused to back down and run off. In the end the mare had done something entirely foolish and had ended up blind. He didn't imagine she'd be picking anymore fights but that had left Nexus with a bit of a dilemma after they departed: who was the winner of the bet?

Over the next couple of weeks he had "persuaded" Cain into joining him in a quest to find out who the winner was of the first bet. It hadn't gone well. Either word had spread throughout the area that there was a pair of suspicious stallions going around attacking mares or Cain was really just that unlikeable. Whatever was going on they couldn't find a single mare to talk with them for more than a few minutes without the party being ruined. As such Nexus decided that the only thing to do was to go outside of the more populated areas and look for girls there.

Cain was about as thrilled to be spending more time with his irritating nephew as he would be to find a leech infested pool in the middle of a desert. Still, there was no refusing Nexus, the beloved grandson of his golden sister who could do no wrong in their mother's eyes. Cain was the dark blemish on their family of perfection and as such he was able to see every flaw that they missed plain as day. For some sick and twisted reason that had not yet stopped Cain from valuing his family more than anything else in the world no matter how much he despised the things they did from day to day.

"Down there." He said to Cain indicating a strange patch of color on the green grass. He had been left in charge of spotting new targets as they flew by and he had become quite good at it. It helped that they weren't flying very high. He didn't wait for a reply before angling himself downward to land on the ground with a casual practiced movement several yards away. Sure enough what he had seen in the air had been a mare. The soft thud behind him let Cain know that Nexus had landed as well. That meant the game had begun.

Uwasa blinked a few times as she stared at the sky. There was something coming her way, something too large to be a bird. Was it a kalona? With a flick of her tail she scrambled to her feet on full alert. Her ears went back, the hairs on her tail began to stand on end and she snarled like her fathers had taught her. The goal was to make herself look as dangerous as possible to make predators think twice about messing with her. She was to be no one's pray.

As the winged creatures drew near she stopped snarling and her ears swiveled. They weren't kalona, they were wind. One was black and gold and the other was cream and red. Uwasa slowly shifted into a more relaxed but still guarded posture. They were probably only landing for a quick drink and then they would be off again. There was no need for panic even if they were larger.

"The water's pretty cold from mountain run off so drink slowly." She said taking a few steps off to one side to make sure she was well out of their way. She didn't want any trouble. Two on one wasn't exactly great odds for a fight.

Nexus just blinked as the mare shuffled off to the side talking about water. When he finally took a moment to look around he noticed that they had landed near a river. She probably thought that they were only there to drink and move on. He chuckled and shook his head before stepping towards the mare. He would take the first move this time because every time Cain had it everything went to hell a lot faster. "No, no, we're not here for water. We saw you from up there and wanted to come say 'hello' to such a pretty little thing." Nexus flashed the little mare a charming smile and boy was she little. She was over a head shorter than he and Cain both. Looking at her features he could guess why. She had the ears of a doe and the feet of those odd kirin creatures and neither of those breeds were known for being large. She also had a cat-like tail, was she part unicorn as well? What in interesting and delicate mix.

Cain wanted to tell Nexus to speak for himself but knew better. He was sick of this little game of Nexus's and had no real intention of contributing this time. He'd say just enough for his nephew to think he was trying and leave it there. The faster Nexus won the faster Cain could get on with his life. "I actually am thirsty." He chimed in walking towards the river's edge. "And I appreciate the warning." He said not sounding very appreciative at all. Such was his nature. He didn't care about other people and he really didn't care what they thought of him. He only said thank you at all to play along.

Uwasa was quickly reconsidering her decision to put on a friendly face. Her fathers and mother had warned her about the intentions of boys and it was clear enough what this one had in mind. She glanced toward the river to locate Nichi and was pleased to see that the fox was already sprinting off toward home. Uwasa was able to breathe a little easier, if there was trouble by the time she got running her fathers would already be on the move. Until then she would fend for herself. She could do this. A fight wouldn't be fair but they didn't seem to be after a fight right now, one didn't even seem to have any interest in her at all.

"Hello then." She said finally. She did her best to be polite but still send the message that she wasn't one to be toyed with. She had no interest in ruining her life with a stallion and especially not with a stallion who obviously took nothing seriously. She had enough on her plate with coming to terms with what exactly it was her fathers were. "Are you sure you don't want a drink like your friend? It's a bit hot to be out flying without one." She honestly just wanted her peace and quiet back.

Nexus huffed quietly. He had heard that tone of voice enough times to recognize it. They were being dismissed again. They hadn't even done anything this time. There was no way that word of them could have made it all the way out here and Cain was too far away to be influencing anything. There was only on conclusion to be drawn from this, mares in general were just a hostile bunch. He scowled at the mare and glanced at Cain before taking a few steps closer to her. They needed a winner and Cain was too far away from him to hear.

"Look, could you just pretend that you think I'm the most fabulous thing on four legs until we go?" He asked impatiently. "If you do that we'll be outta your hair in no time." Strictly speaking this was against the rules and it defeated the point of the game. The point of the game had been lost long ago anyway since it had all been to make Cain uncomfortable around people and Cain was no longer willing to get close to their targets. Nexus couldn't just let the game drop so easily, that would be admitting defeat and he wouldn't be defeated.

Cain drank deeply from the water listening calmly to the mare's reaction. That wasn't a good sign. Cain was tired of hunting for a mare that was easy enough to play along and still pretty enough to meet Nexus's standards. Cain imagined it would be easier to just pick some misshapen mare that no stallion would want and play this game with her. A mare like that would probably hate herself if she refused the attentions of two attractive stallions. Then it would be easy enough to find a winner and no one would ever believe her if she said they'd shown interest in her. Their reputations would be safe. If only it was possible to look upon such a mare without feeling unclean.

Cain sighed and took another drink. Nexus would want him back at his side soon to really play the game. He turned to look back at the pair and raised an eyebrow to find Nexus whispering something to the mare. This was a trick Cain hadn't seen before. He frowned, what was his nephew up to?

This was not a situation she had ever been prepared for. Uwasa just found herself staring blankly at the red-haired stallion. He wanted her to act like he liked her? Was this some sort of bizarre game or was it some form of trap? He said they would leave quickly if she did but was that a lie? If it wasn't it would be a peaceful way to get them away but what exactly did pretending to find him amazing entail? Did she just praise him or was there something more physical involved?

She sighed and glanced over to see the other stallion was watching. She turned back quickly. "Alright." She whispered back. "But no touching or I'll tell him." She flicked her eyes over to the other stallion. "Deal?"

Nexus blinked in surprise, he’d almost expected her to refuse but instead she was negotiating conditions for her agreement. The way she spoke it almost sounded like she negotiated such things on a daily basis. It was a little troublesome that she had already figured out that he didn’t want Cain to know and even more troublesome that she was drawing the line at touching. That might make things a little complicated but he didn’t think he had time to argue with her before Cain returned. “Alright, deal, but you better be convincing.” He conceded quietly fighting back a scowl. “He can’t suspect anything.”

Cain wondered if he needed to be concerned that the two were talking in whispers. Usually when that happened it meant that Nexus was talking about him. He would have been more suspicious if the mare was laughing but she still looked serious. Was it possible that the two were having an actual conversation? It was hard to imagine Nexus conversing normally with anyone inside or outside of their family. Yet, there he was, chatting away without fighting. This was either a miracle or Cain was going to regret walking back over there.

Cain took in a deep breath and prepared himself for the worst before trotting back to his nephew and the strange mare. “What have I missed?” He inquired trying to keep the suspicion out of his voice.

Uwasa gave the dark winged male a thin smile. "That shouldn't be a problem." After all, Uwasa was used to putting on a show for her mother's herd. She hadn't seen them in quite some time but Uwasa still remembered how to pretend to like someone. Or, at least she remembered how to pretend she liked family. Pretending to like a male was a different story. She imagined acting like her fathers might be a good mark. They loved each other even if at moments they seemed like they completely hated one another.

"Your friend was just telling me what brought you two out this way." She said politely to the black stallion before turning back to the other. She smiled at him and did her best to maintain eye contact. Why did he have to be so tall? "Is there really such a fantastic place out in that swamp land?" She asked forcing some excitement into her voice. It wouldn't do to sound uninterested or suspicious or his friend would never believe that this was what they had been speaking about.

Nexus fought to keep his face calm as the mare started to talk. What had he just said? 'He can't suspect a thing.' Now she was about to tell him everything. He wanted to slap her for it but something about the way she was talking didn't sound right. She didn't sound annoyed at either of them and then she finished her thought. She had provided him with a cover story. She was going along with it after all.

"Oh yeah." He said clearing his throat. "Great big...trees...and rocks. Shiny things." Nexus nodded his head a few times before glancing at Cain and then grinning at her. "I'd like to take you there sometime. Show you the, uh, sights." He ruffled his wings to make them look bigger and more impressive. All they had to do was sell her interest to Cain and then he could 'dump' her and be on his merry way. It shouldn't take that long.

Cain shook his head at the mare and his nephew. Why had Nexus decided it was a good idea to be so secretive about their cover story? Was he just trying to make Cain look bad now? It was certainly something tricky enough that Nexus would want to give it a try. Make the uncle look like a fool and then the nephew would look oh so clever in comparison.

"I'm not his friend, I'm his uncle." He said dryly with a roll of his bright eyes. "And yes that's true." He added deciding it was best to just play along even though Nexus was risking blowing a hole in his own cover story with such a shoddy description. "There are some interesting ruins out that way." He said with a pointed look at Nexus. Ruins sounded so much better than 'shiny things' and he knew that there were ruins out that way. He'd heard whispers about them.

Internally Uwasa rolled her eyes. Clearly this stallion had never told a convincing lie before as he was about to ruin his own story. She wasn't sure if his invitation was making things better or worse. She could have agreed right then and there if not for the other's interjection.

"His uncle?" She asked blinking owlishly. She wasn't entirely sure what to make of this. They were out trying to trick girls into liking one of them over the other. That she understood. The fact that they were uncle and nephew was throwing her. That would be like her going out to find a match with Akiyo or even her parents. It made her stomach churn but for some reason they were comfortable with this? She looked them both over before resigning herself to say nothing on the matter. The faster she agreed to some fake date the sooner she could get them away from her.

"Yes, I would love to go see the ruins with you..." She paused, they hadn't even exchanged names. She had now idea what to call him. She cleared her throat and just smiled hoping her slip-up went unnoticed.

Nexus wasn’t trying to hide his real feelings and actually did roll his eyes before scowling at his uncle. He just had to correct the girl. He just couldn’t bring himself to let it go just this once. “He’s only like three years older than me.” He clarified trying to salvage the situation. Even if this was a game he didn’t want people thinking he was some freak that went chasing tail with old men. “Grandma was getting impatient for grandkids.” It wasn’t strictly true but it was the easiest way to explain such a strange age gap between himself and Cain.

With that out of the way he went right back into his little play. “She likes me.” He muttered quietly as he leaned over to his uncle. “I get this date and I win~” Nexus chuckled as he straightened back up and grinned at the mare. “I’d be happy to take you there now, just the two of us, how’s that sound?”

Now Cain was beginning to get suspicious. It wasn’t that Nexus was acting particularly unusual and he didn’t know the mare enough to know what was normal for her but something felt off all the same. She’d sounded so stand-offish earlier and now she wanted to take a trip to some ruins that were at least a day away? She was either extremely easy, which Cain doubted, or she was trying to lead Nexus into a trap. Did she know of something that lived in the swamp? Something dangerous? Something that might eat Nexus in exchange for some reward?

Cain paused. Did he actually care if something at Nexus because he his head was too big to suspect danger? Not really, no, but his mother and sister would. Cain let out a long sigh and shook his head. “I don’t think that would be such a good idea, nephew.” He interjected wishing that he could just keep his mouth shut.

"I see." Uwasa said slowly as she pondered over this revelation. Uncle and nephew were only three years apart. She smiled internally. Her family was not the strangest out there after all. Next to these two, two fathers and a mother seemed absolutely normal. "Well that makes..." Her voice trailed off as she watched the two converse quietly between themselves. "Sense." The faintest trace of a frown tugged at her lips. Something was going on here and Uwasa didn't know what. The dark one hadn't seemed all that interested in things from the start but now he was suddenly showing signs of wanting to keep them apart entirely. Had he figured out what was going on? So much for being gone in no time.

"I think that sounds lovely." She said a little louder than was strictly necessary in an attempt to get this plan back on track. "You can find a way to entertain yourself until we get back, right?" Uwasa smiled politely at Cain but the expression didn't quite make it into her eyes. "Or you could just head home, I'm sure your nephew can handle himself."

Nexus made a face as his uncle hissing, "And I think you just don't want me to win. Tough luck." He stepped closer to Uwasa making a point to push Cain off to the side with his wing at the same time. "I'm sure he can think of something. He'll probably just stand around looking hopeless like usual." He turned to shoot the other stallion a dirty look over his shoulder.

Cain snorted. Nexus was so eager to win the stupid fame that he wasn't thinking clearly. He didn't want to help his nephew but he would in order to save his own skin. He marched forward and shoved Nexus off to one side by ramming him with his head.

Nexus snarled and snapped at his uncle but allowed himself to be moved to keep from falling over. Once Cain had pulled back Nexus settled into a fighting stance, his eyes narrowed angrily. "What is wrong with you?" He demanded flecks of saliva flying about in his fury.

"Use your head Nexus!" Cain snapped standing his ground. "This mare wants nothing to do with us and then suddenly when the swamp is involved she's all eager to go? Doesn't that seem suspicious in the least? Just look at her! She's wearing a skull as a hair ornament for crying out loud! Does that not concern you?" He made no effort to sugar coat his words for the mare's benefit. Her feelings mattered to him about as much as the feelings of a blade of grass. "If you go with her into that swamp do you really think you'll be coming back?"

Somewhere in the back of Nexus's mind a little voice said, "Oops." He had thought that this had been a brilliant plan. Somewhere along the line he had forgotten how needlessly cautious his uncle was. He had two options now the first was to reveal his little bargain with the mare, the second was to play the game. "Does it still count as my victory even if she was only going to date me to kill me?"

What could he say? He wanted to win.
