ESSENTIALS
  • Name: Nathaniel Greystone
  • Nickname: Nathan, Nate, "Boy! I'm talking to you!"
  • Age: 17
  • Social Class: Peasant
  • Occupation: Cave-worker

APPEARANCE
A little on the short side, Nate is about 5'4" and stocky. He's rather dark, with brown eyes and black hair. Moonfaced, with ears rather big for the rest of him. His hair is shaggy, and he often has a slightly scruffy face; this isn't so much a conscious choice as a tendency to forget about it (his parents have one mirror, and he rarely uses it). Though he's not particularly handsome, his sunny expression softens his appearance. Nathaniel is on the hairy side.
His clothing style is warm. Nate doesn't make a fuss about appearances, and as long as it keeps the chill out, he will wear that work-stained parka ragged.

PERSONALITY
Nate's a sweet boy, but not the sharpest arrow in the quiver. That's not to say he's stupid, he's just both a tad naive and a little slow. If you want someone to talk to, Nate's your man; if you want someone to solve your problems... maybe find someone else.
Nathaniel likes plants, which is one reason he's fairly content to work in the caves. Because the woods are full of plants (duh), Nate has a latent curiosity regarding it. He often inspects the herbs brought back from the wood in the marketplace, but he's never found enough courage to ask a hunter for a live sample (probably doesn't have the coin anyway). Besides plants, Nathaniel loves music and works of colorful works of art. However, he lacks the talent (and money) to play an instrument and he can't draw or paint either. He's a decent whistler, though.
There are very few things Nathan truly dislikes, but they exist. For one thing, he can't stand it when people don't say what they mean. This makes communicating with nobles a little difficult, but they tend to have little interest in him anyway (and with the way he looks, who could blame them?). Most of the things that irritate him have to do with interpersonal communication; hypocrisy, class discrimination, prematurely judging someone, that sort of thing.
Oh, and lochears scare the piss out of him. Some incident he had with one as a small child. Doesn't like to talk about it (though this is likely out of embarrassment as much as the recollection of childhood trauma).
As far as hopes and dreams go, Nate is depressingly dull. He's content to be a cave-worker, and hasn't even shown an interest in settling down and starting a family. If he has any dreams at all, it's likely just to learn every. Damn. Thing. About plants. He might, however, like to learn to read to further this goal.
When he becomes stressed, Nate tends to retreat to his collection of pressed herbs and flowers. If that doesn't work, he'll work on his weaving. This generally calms him down, as it requires focus and methodical, repetitive movements.

ABILITIES
Physically, Nathaniel is pretty hardy. He's not abnormally strong, and in fact a little weaker than the workers who are bigger than him. He is, however, tough: he has a high pain tolerance and handles the cold well. He tends to get overheated while working on the slightly warmer days of the year. Sometimes in such cases, his fellow workers have to remind him to keep his gloves and outer-coat on because that's how people get pneumonia, moron.
Nathaniel isn't exactly clumsy, but he's far from graceful. Also, unless he tries really, really hard, he makes a lot of noise when moves about. Even then, he's not going to sneak up on anything that isn't either deaf or highly distracted.
Nathaniel is naive and kind of slow. He'll take you at your word, and the poor sap will be the last to realize you've duped him. On the other hand, he has a good memory for things that he finds interesting.
Nate is a sweetheart. You'd be hard pressed to find a more compassionate, patient, and honest person. But that honesty can get him into trouble. If you ask him a question, Nathan is going to answer you with the truth, so don't ask him anything you don't want the answer to. Trick questions often leave him baffled as to why the asker is now suddenly vexed with him, and he's not too good with rhetorical questions either.

HOBBIES
Weaving: it's a little odd for a male, but he's fairly good at it
Pressing plants: exactly what it says on the tin.

TOUCHED APPEARANCE

Level 1: When Nate is using his magic, his ears start to... glow. Like heated coals. It starts at the tips but spreads as far as the base of his jawline if he uses it long enough. The longer they've been glowing, the longer it takes them to uh, cool.
Level 2: Kid, you're ears are burning. No, really burning! What looks to be small flames are on the tips of his ears. The longer he uses his magic, brighter they burn and the longer it takes for them to go out.

MAGIC
Level 1) He hears music from the plants. Over time he can learn to identify that certain music = certain plants -- so he'd be able to tell mushrooms from ferns from fruits from trees just by listening. He wouldn't be able to tell what kind of mushroom or fern, but that's still useful info.

Level 2) The music becomes more distinct and separate, which means that it'll tell him particular qualities about the plants he hears -- so he might hear 'poisonous mushroom with grey-green skin that settle close to the roots of a tree' and recognize that as a particular thing. Or 'round fruit with firm red skin that hangs from the branch of a tree', and he'd know that was an apple.

This all looks good! Wanna suggest something about your Touched power, just to make it a bit more useful for if you get it. Instead of just saying he can 'hear' them, what if it were something like this

I think this'd make your magic more fun to use, if it ever came about.

Lemme know, and then I'll stamp!

That's much better. You can make an official profile here, and once you have, make a post here to get added to the OL! And if you're looking for caveworker connections, PM me? Jakob works there when Locke catches him and tosses him back to indentured servitude...
