When the doorbell rang, Leiter only shouted “Coming!” (along with a shut up! for the dog that started to bark) because she thought it was the Chinese delivery guy, but instead she opened the door to the spandex-wearing Mr. Lightning. She promptly slammed it in his face – but he’d stuck his foot in doorway. After a pained hiss, he shouted, “Lives depend on you!”

The eighteen-year-old snorted.

When she’d first discovered her ability to Phase in out and out of places, Leiter had thought having a super power was pretty cool – the initial nausea, vomiting, and extreme fatigue aside, she actually liked her ability. And once she grew out of those side effects, Leiter had begun imagining a world where she didn’t have to pay for those designer sunglasses she wanted and oh, was it a beautiful world.

That was when the League of Superheroes had found her. At first, she’d thought they were pretty cool, too. They landed her in newspapers and on TV and stuff after she helped out with delicate hostage situations by removing the hostage part of the situation, and though she’d been told verbal approval from Mr. Lightning was kind of rare, he had congratulated her when she Phased with two travelers for the first time. While Megamind’s explanations had been headache-inducing – something about traveling other dimensions where time was different, or whatever – life as a sixteen-year-old super heroine had been cake.

Until Jackson came along.

Of all the dumb mistakes she made, Jackson was the absolute dumbest (though she would never say that in front of him, at least when he was old enough to know what it meant). Jackson meant she was absolutely not, under any circumstance whatsoever, going to put her life in needless danger. Jackson meant her instant resignation as a super heroine.

But somehow, the League had not quite managed to grasp the concept of “I quit.”

For the past eighteen months, they’d knocked on Leiter’s door at least twice a month telling her the world was going to end, or some s**t like that. And every time, without fail, Leiter had slammed the door in their faces or on their hands or feet. This time was no different – Mr. Lightning was gonna have to wait until the real delivery man showed up if he planned on seeing Leiter’s face again tonight.

Leiter was just turning to head back to the TV when Mr. Lightning changed the tune of the song. “It’s your parents, Leiter.”

Aw, s**t*.

Yanking the door open, Leiter’s grey eyes were hard as she glared at the leader of the League. “I swear, if you are lying just to get me out—“

“I would – are you babysitting?” Mr. Lightning asked, surprised at the eighteen-month-old boy Leiter was balancing on her hip.

“No,” the girl snapped, gently tugging on one of Jackson’s hands – he’d tangled his fingers in her dark brown hair, and it kinda hurt.

“Then – oh.” Comprehension had finally dawned on Mr. Lightning. “Oh,” he repeated dumbly. “ Oh. Wait – never mind then, we can handle this situation! Okay, goodbye Phasegirl, another time!”

Like the honorable man he was, Mr. Lightning was quick to retract the League’s plea for help, and he hastily turned to go. Leiter grabbed his arm with her free hand. “Oh no you don’t!” she growled.

Ten minutes later found Leiter Harrison dressed sensibly for the mid-spring evening in jeans and a sweater, with Jackson settled in a harness on her back and a baby bag slung over her shoulder. She stood by Mr. Lightning, who was less sensibly dressed in his bright yellow spandex; the two of them (plus a bunch of police men, but they pretty much ceased to become significant the instant a Superhero arrived) were waiting for backup, and Leiter spent the time memorizing the cracks and chips in the funky restaurant’s fire-engine red exterior.

Wow, Leiter thought. Worst engagement party ever.

A sigh came from behind the white inari mask as the image of the brightly colored daisy hero came into view. How that man ever made it to be leader of the League of Superheroes was beyond him, oh that was right he could harness the power of lightning. Another sigh and this time the white clad figure stood up from his ledge on a roof top close to the restaurant of interest. Where in the world did it say the most potentially destructive power automatically put you in prime spot to be leader. Although the White Fox did not have to worry about the League of Superheroes level of leadership.

He had refused to be a member for the...what was it tenth time this month now. He had told them countless times that his team was the only one he needed and he was not one to work onsite with others well. Sure one or two more heroes with powers always made things go easier but things always got complicated as the number of heroes grew in one spot. Then there was the rule book and guidelines...and the politics, who would have thought a group called the League of superheroes would have so many internal issues.

"What's the matter White, those sighs didn't sound happy," a quick burst transmission came in that only its recipient could hear.

"Fine Violet, the yellow wonder is here though, and he brought...a mother and her baby?"

"Mother and baby...get a good look at them and I'll check the face through the databank."

"Kind of an odd place to bring someone like that. Maybe old yellow bolts is doing some kind of charity thing...who brings a baby to a crime scene anyways?"

"That would be Leiter, AKA Phasegirl. She dropped out of the league about a year ago."

"Phasegirl? No kidding, I remember seeing that bit about the hostage rescue she helped with. Who's the baby, is it hers?"

"Looks that way, young Jackson."

"Well at least we know why she quit now. Still she is oftly young, I'm sure there's a story there. Well we have work to do or leave things to yellow pants and hope he doesn't fry everyone."

"Now you know he wouldn't do that, he would have to fill out to much paper work if he did."

"Very true, alright I guess I'll go say hi. Have Blue scan the police frequencies, net, and other usual sources for anything on this case. Send it my way once you do, I'll try the direct approach."

"Will do, and be careful the direct approach is not you strong suit."

With a chuckle the white robed hero flung a kunai with a small thin line attached towards a building nearby. With a quick tug and hop he was swinging down and into a nearby alleyway where he could better approach the two superheroes. It was still always another worldly experience bring around the super version of heroes, as he himself was not blessed with super natural gifts. He was in the highest peak of physical conditioning with several martial arts and gymnastics to help him out. That and the array of technological goodies he could use made him seem superhuman. That also had something to do with White Fox not joining the League. He felt that that much power needed someone to watch it, and it would not do to have it be another super powered hero. A normal human to watch out for the rest of the normal humans seemed best.

With another sigh White Fox moved with all the silence and grace of his animal name sake approaching the two heroes from behind. It was then White Fox caught the eye of the young Jackson slung over Phasegir...Leiter's back. Mr. Lightning he had no issues with spooking but he would not put the young child through something like that. So he gave the young boy a wave and brought a finger to his mask in a motion to stay quiet just before he spoke to them.

"Planning on taking the entire police force out to lunch Lightning? This another PR stunt or is there a real emergency going on?" The sarcasm was all but dripping from the White Fox's words and despite those words the mysterious hero was aware of the situation.

With a teenage ex-superhero for a mother, you'd think a toddler would be used to weird things happening, but no. Leiter had spent the last eighteen months carefully sheltering Jackson from anything that carried any hint of the supernatural -- she wasn't sure if her son had inherited any of her ability, but she wasn't taking any chances. She wanted her little mistake to have the best life possible.

When he started to scream "Mama!" and pound his little fists into her back from the baby-backpack, Leiter turned on her heel with a glare for the snarky masked man who'd made her boy cry. Twisting to unclip Jackson, she pulled him close and made hushing noises, patting his back until he stopped crying while Mr. Lightning took care of this new arrival.

"This is a hostage situation," Mr. Lightning replied acidly, his eye-sore bright spandex somehow lending themselves to the authority in his voice and stance. Leiter mentally shook her head, and eyed the masked man askance.

Leiter snorted as she realized what Mr. Lightning already knew. "And the hostage taker is a super," she informed the masked man. Though Leiter hated Mr. Lightning a little for his insistent near-stalking of her, the part of her that was still Phasegirl still respected his power and leadership abilities. Even the Leiter part had to appreciate the man's sense of chivalry; the masked Power-less man's sarcasm set her on edge. "So run along, now," she told him as condescendingly she possibly could with a baby yanking on her hair and gurgling in her arms.

Well that about as oppositely as the White Fox had hoped for. He had thought the league and all their lot had gotten used to him helping out on occasion and providing the piece of technical insight and stealth many of the league lacked. In truth only the one standing without a costume on was capable of being stealthier than he, but then that was again due to her powers more than anything else. While White Fox may have not been a fan of Mr. Lightning he hoped he understood they were on the same side still, and he did fill bad for making the young child cry.

"Apologies Pha...Leiter to your young one I did not mean to upset him," The information on the current situation did seem to grow in severity and difficulty but that had never really been a factor for someone like White Fox, a non-super hero living in a world of super powered villains, "Last time I checked being a super didn't mean you were invincible. The large super abilities just mean you have an equally powerful weakness in the counter balance department," His masked turned to the restaurant and from behind the mask a series of gadgets went to work analyzing the structure and looking to see into the building, "Something like this I would think you would welcome extra help from someone who was good at not being detected. I can't believe I'm saying this but I can get into a better position for relaying information and let you two take point. Violet and Blue are checking on the building now for anything that could be useful. Which one of the super psychos is it anyways?"

Sirens could be heard throughout the city, blaring their usual sound of ‘false justice’. At this point in the world, police didn’t really have the power they once had. Technological advancements and lust for power brought about rumors of ‘change’. These rumors rushed in an Era of new reform, an Era of super-human knowledge that could make or break the world itself. It happened so suddenly that it seemed as if the world just stopped spinning; SUCCESS! It was all over the news, in every city, state, country, continent; no one was left out. As the word spread about super-human ability, more and more super heroes would pop up. Soon the world was so over populated with super-humans that those who chose to enjoy life on normal terms where reduced to the slums and areas of less renown. Though the thought of having super powers appealed to a vast majority of the world and was a huge economic boost, there was a slip in the system that allowed almost anyone to receive these powers. This lead to terrorism at a grand scale. Super Villains, as these evil doers became known as, worked separate from each other, causing random chaos wherever and whenever they could. Becoming tired of the common news of evil, some super-humans formed a “League of Super Heroes” that seemed to do good, that is until government got involved. It regulated their movements and things, which limited the amount of good that they could actually do. Things became such a political mess that many super-humans took to the slums, reducing themselves back to what they where before; human.

Being reduced back to a false state of humanity, super-heroes tried to live normal lives. It was a hard thing to do, but somehow they managed. Soon they began to fit in as best they could, mingling, marrying, reproducing; the usual in our time. What no one realized was that genetics where passed down to their off-spring, resulting in super-human children with random abilities that never ceased to end. Adrian was one of those children. He had a very normal life, completely obvious to what was really going on in the world around him. His parents did a good job of hiding what they could from him. All he really knew about super-humans was that his father was insanely smart, always creating some new gadget to help them in their everyday life. His mom, on the other hand, was a normal woman who tried to teach her child to the best of her ability. She did what she could for her son, making sure he had a decent education and something to do around the clock, to keep him preoccupied enough not to wonder about the outside world. She managed to keep Adrian at bay until he was about eighteen, two years ago to the date, when the League of Super Heroes came pounding on the door for his father to join the League.

Adrian’s curiosity was peaked with the florescent colored spandex wearing group of super heroes that marched down the steps into his father’s workshop. He attempted to follow down after them, but his mother forbade him entrance. She told him it be best if he would wait in his room and being the obedient child thus far, he did just that. As he made it to his room and sat on his bed, it was then he discovered his ability.

Having his curiosity peaked, Adrian wished that he could see exactly what was happening. Almost as if someone or something heard him, his house instantly became vaguely transparent. He could see through the walls, floor and even the ceiling, but what made it even better was that he could also see the width of each. It didn’t last long, but Adrian liked what he felt inside.

Soon after the League left his home, taking his father along, Adrian asked his mother about it and she told him everything. Not knowing how to respond, Adrian told his mother of his ability. Words could not describe the paleness of her face as he told her about his ability. Things never where the same after that…

Adrian’s mind was flooded with thoughts as he walked over to the window of his apartment. Sirens where blaring loudly throughout ‘his’ district of the slums. ‘I better check this out…’ He thought as he walked over to his closet and pulled the door open, He was greeted by the usual entourage of casual clothing. He grabbed a pair of jeans and slid them on quickly, followed by a black Aeropostal tee-shirt. He completed his get-up with a green hoodie and his goggles that he always hung around his neck. You see, Adrian used his father’s intellect as a cover up for his ability. The police believed that the goggles gave Adrain the ability to see through walls and aloud him to help them on several occasions, without governmental interference, so it wasn’t unusual for Adrian to cross under the yellow tape of crime scenes.

Adrian left the house and ran over to where all the fuss was coming from, ‘Oh, it’s coming from Leiter’s place…’ He thought as he saw he house surrounded by police cars in the distance. He made it in time to hear the ‘White Fox’ offer his aid however he could. Adrian, feeling obligated to assist his neighbor, walked over to the head of police and tapped on his shoulder. “What’s up this time?” He asked in a nonchalant tone.

“What’s the matter? I’ll tell you what’s wrong.” The officer said pointing in the direction of Leiter. “There is a hostage situation down at Tiki's and she's some how connected, that's what!” The officer finished his statement with dissatisfaction, obviously because the League was somehow involved.

“I’ll see what I can do…” Adrian said as he walked over to where Leiter was. He noticed that the guy in the spandex was one of the League’s associates that had contacted his father two years earlier. ‘I have personal business with you…’ He thought as he waked in the midst of the group. He heard the ‘White Fox’ ask if something was really happening. Adrian gave the masked man a half-glance before answering the question for the League’s associate. “We’re dealing with Arsonist here. He’s apparently got Leiter involved in some sort of hold up in a restaurant not too far from here…” He said as he reached his hands up towards his goggles and adjusted them over his eyes. He pretended to click a few imaginary buttons on the side of the goggles as he shifted his vision. His eyes would begin to glow, reflecting off of the goggles as if they where lighting up. ‘Let’s see…’ Adrian thought as his eyes shifted from building to building. ‘Ah there we are…’ Adrian thought to himself as he adjusted his standing position to face the direction of the restaurant, not that it affected his vision, but just to make it look legitimate.

He saw a huge amount of activity at Tiki’s Grill & Bar, a well known eatery that had decent food. It was teeming with crooks, but it only took Adrian a few moments before locating the hostages. He shifted his sight back to normal and slid off his goggles. “From what it looks like…” He said turning back to the three, “they are being held in the freezer at Tiki’s Grill & Bar, but the place is crawling with idiots, it’ll be hard to get in without being noticed. My goggles are out of range to give you an exact estimate on the tangos…” Adrian lied, knowing d*** well how many crooks where there, but he had to make sure everything looked legit in front of the League. He just hoped his front so far would work…

It was growing into a regular collection of odd personas as another person joined their standing band of onlookers. A younger boy who looked more like he was about to go to high school than come help a police situation. White Fox knew of the kid through net chat and from other sources that talked a lot about his special goggles. White Fox had taken up a position just a bit away from the rest of the group but well within ear shot still of the group as he waited for information on the situation from Violet. Taking a somewhat uncharacteristic silent approach the white masked hero just let the boy talk and took in the information he was gathering at a fast rate. White Fox's tech was good but if those kid's eyewear was to be believed he just out performed both his mask and Blue's computer skills. As if on cue Violet gave a reply back that almost matched the goggled kid's description of the situation, in a bit more detail and larger words but the idea was the same. However the difference was the count of goons within the structure.

"Thermal imaging is showing a big blip for Arsonist doing his bit of pacing and walking. I'm showing four thugs by the main door armed for closer quarters combat, three by the back door with it rigged with explosives...or something else that's giving off a small signature laid around the door, two more by the freezer who seemed well armed, and then...I have about eight subtle blips inside the freezer. Either the Arsonist is being ironic or being super clever against thermal scans. If they had been in there any longer I would probably have missed them," the ear piece inside White Fox's mask stopped after Violets run down.

"Ten goons, well armed...and possibly booby-trapped the back door," The white masked turned to the kid with the goggles, "Not bad for a pair of goggles kid, keep that kind of tech up and you might rival my own."

Walking back to the yellow spandex wearing leader of the League White Fox looked around at the police and fire department standing around looking like they were doing something. In truth once the League showed up it was hard for anyone else to have jurisdiction as the heroes held domain over much of the planet. Most of the time it worked out, but during trials it proved to be odd and sometimes work for the crooks. Then White Fox had little room to talk, even if he did do his best to have the criminal be "caught" by the police. Looking back at the restaurant White Fox went over a few ideas in his head before he spoke.

"I can handle the cronies easily enough, can even disarm whatever they have on the back door. The walking match-head is all yours Lightning, and if Ms. Leiter would be willing to get the hostages out of the freezer from the back while we draw their attention we might be able to do this with no real damage to the structure."

Aiden & Ava

Ava paced restlessly, the sound of her soft, padded boots drowned out by the arsenal of grenades, ammunition, and various bladed weapons sheathed and clipped at her waist, thighs, back-strap and other various locations, jingling, jangling, and otherwise clattering. Hardly concealed, there was little room in her thermal, fitted body-armor to conceal anything. As impatient as she was feeling, though, the noise of her personal arsenal was as distracting as she was willing to be while her twin did his work.

Separated by seconds, Avan and Aiden had always been together. As children they stood alone in their classes as strange; both of them having developed their super powers when they were eight and advancing in their schooling with the aid of those who had a mind to recruit them once they were old enough...

... and there they were, fourteen years old with more martial training than the entire city's police department combined, on Arsonist's payroll inside of restaurant that neither of them would have thought twice about had it not been for the convenience of patrons that day.

"Mr. Lighting is here, as well as Phasegirl. There's another Super out there too, but I don't recognize him." Aiden's voice cut into Ava's pacing and she turned to him. "Anyone else from the League?" She asked, and her brother shook his head in response.

Neither of the twins needed to discuss what needed to be done then. Both of them had their instruction and, now that Aiden was out of the trance that his ability to sense other Supers required, both of them separated to start on their next task.

While Aiden slipped into the freezer in street clothes, taking the place of a 'hostage', Ava slipped into the kitchens. Empty now, the kitchen staff having been added to the few hostages that remained in the building, it took Ava only a few moments to line the open-flame stove tops with shallow fry-pans and to light the flames. With a grin she emptied her ammunition pouched into the pans and left them there to heat up, closing the kitchen doors behind her and taking her place in the main seating area behind Arsonist.

Seconds later the building was filled with the sounds of heavy gun-fire and, according to plan, Ava screamed.

Leiter's grey eyes blazed with a sharpness as her angry gaze snapped first to the boy in the goggles and then to the masked man. Hoisting Jackson up further on her hip, she let his head rest in the crook between neck and collarbone, one of his hears pressed against the side of her neck and she shifted her free arm to cover his other ear. "Mama, mama mama," Jackson began chanting -- he was smart, for a year and a half, and they'd gone over what he was supposed to do when Leiter closed his ears off.

Sure that his innocent baby hearing was protected, Leiter's famous temper ignited. "Look, here," she informed goggle-boy and mask-man. "Mr. Lightning here is already calling enough attention to this situation - and excuse me for saying, Mr. Who-Needs-Super-Heroes, but as you've happend to notice in this situation I am the best for the job." Her voice was a low growl. "Secondly, who cares about the ******** building," Leiter all but snarled -- she was ready to say more, but Mr. Lightning cut her up with a word.

"Phasegirl," he said sharply, reminding Leiter of two things. One, she'd agreed to come but as Phasegirl, therefore putting herself under his command. Secondly, she was supposed to be Phasegirl. Super-heroes didn't have connections to the world. The League of Superheroes was disgustingly idealistic at times, and didn't care about politics or any of that. They hired PR guys to take care of their image, and had a really smart guy who took care the legal issues so they could do what they did best unhindered: save the innocent and protect the weak. Ruling the world - or influencing it - was left to the super villains; super heroes weren't supposed to have familial relationships. Those belonged to their civilian identities.

So it wasn't Phasegirl's parents in there- Phasegirl didn't have parents. According to the street myth, she was lost from another dimension and had settled down in the League of Superheroes. Leiter Colburn, on the other hand, was very much an Earthling. And it was Leiter Colburn's parents who were in there -- while gun shots went off.

Leiter barely heard the scream; the sound of gunfire in the air made her tense, Jackson squirming in her arms as she sensed her discomfort. Mr. Lightning grabbed her arm.

"No, Leiter. Not yet," he said, his warning mixed with sympathy. Leiter snarled wordlessly and pulled out what appeared to be a pair of 3-D movie glasses.

In fact, they were 3-D movie glasses; the different tint and warped vision they gave the wearer helped Leiter to disassociate herself from her current plane and focus on planes that were open for Phasing. The glasses weren't something she'd needed very much in her early days, but since Jackson she found herself increasingly reliant on them.

For a moment the White Fox simply looked at the unnerved woman as she went about her rant. It came to the white masked hero that maybe emotional disconnection or other mental instabilities were a by-product of having super powers. So far all the supers held themselves either above everyone else, as some kind of heaven sent savors, or just plans uncaring about others around them. With his stance not changing the White Fox simply turned his body to face the woman directly as from her tone there was likely more going on her than first glance. Regardless of the fact concern for the property of a civilian should be priority just below the safety of the civilian. If you save the people and their business is destroyed in the process...sure, you saved them now, but will they be able to make it in the long run.

"And people wonder why I feel the way I do about supers. You may very well be the best for the job Phasegirl but your also not the only one who can. When did trying to save people becoming a political affair? I'm here to help, the enemy is inside the diner not outside," White Fox had intel on Phasegirl, enough to know she wasn't from outer space or something strange like that, he also knew her powers were just what her name said, "and as I recall your powers are only phasing, so when pyro-nut decides to go crazy, and things don't go as planned what will you do?"

As if on cue the end of the White Fox's question ended with the sounds of gun fire coming from inside the dinner and a scream that shot out faster than any bullet. Rounds came out of the dinner and everyone hit the ground or moved for cover. The White Fox moved to put his Kevlar layered back to the incoming rounds and his front to the disgruntled Phasegirl and her small child. A small punch to his sides told him a round found his body armor, but the impact was light and from the odd angle was more likely a ricochet. The layers of Kevlar and added fiver mesh weave of his suit and the high tech under layer body suit absorbed much of the impact leaving the White Fox with likely a new bruise but nothing more. Turning to regard the dinner the White Fox switched on his masks optics to start scanning, he turned to the kid with the fancy goggles as he adjusted.

"Kid you got the speedy eyes, check for life while I check for anything that might cause problems down the line," White Fox turned to Lightning with all issues concerning their feelings about each other long gone from his voice, "Lightning the police are going to want to storm the dinner with what just happened. It's your call, if you're going to send in Phasegirl it will need to be now and if nothing else we can provide a distraction and draw fire...figuratively and literally."

Adrian listened quietly as he watched the Masked Man take a few steps away from the group. His ears where greeted by a little static then low voice tones that he couldn’t pick up on. Just then, the man turned to him and complimented him on his goggles. ‘If you only knew…’ He thought to himself as the Masked man walked back over to the group.

The Masked man gave a tentative solution to the problem, but Adrian was unsure how that plan would work. Adrian was about the express his concern for such a rough plan, but Leiter spoke up and begin tearing into the Masked man. She started to rant about how this situation had already escalated and how she was the best for the job. Of course, Adrian agreed, but when she said something about the building he spoke up.

“Leiter, your right about this situation escalating, anytime you get the League involved there’s a s*** load of problems that comes, but we CIVILIANS deal with the aftermath of ya’ll stupidity. It’s the civilians who have to live here. WE care about our buildings, WE care about our people, and as far as I care I’d rather if we rescued them; the League is nothing but a pain in the a**…” He said as he turned his attention back to the building and the real problem at hand.

Just as Adrian finished, the Masked man spoke up. Although he took a different approach, he shared Adrian’s feelings about the League. ‘Yeah, he’s a true civilian…’ Adrian thought as he heard gunshots. “Everyone down!” He shouted as all the officers and fireman hit the deck. The civilians that where in the area scattered, causing chaos in already hectic situation. Adrian squatted and rolled into a sitting position next to a police car. He sat up just in time hear a ear piercing scream and see the Masked man take a bullet for Leiter. ‘They can’t be on offensive if they’re already on the defensive…’ Adrian thought as he pulled his goggles up to his eyes and adjusted them. He didn’t bother going through the pretend motions, this situation was too dangerous. Before he could stand, however, the Masked man told him to check the building. “On it…” Adrian said as he stood.

His goggles where glowing the bright blue that reflected off of the goggle, hiding his super natural affinity once more. It only took him seconds to asses the situation. All of the color drained from his face as he knew the situation had grown far worse then before; time was short. He let his eyes drift back slowly to their normal state and pulled down his goggles. He looked at the police man that was already back in the front seat of his car talking on the radio. “I’m going to need that walkie-talkie.” Adrian said as he turned his attention the Masked man and Leiter.

“Rouge bullets…” He began simply, “We have limited time now, there’s a fire in the kitchen. My guess is they dumped some ammunition into a pan or something and heated it to explode. I hope none of the hostages to a bullet…” He stopped momentarily as the officer handed him the walkie-talkie. Adrian nodded his thanks as he continued. “The hostages are still there, but the goons have cleared the building, I only see about one-fourth of the group in the back room of the building. We’re moving, now.” Adrian said turning his attention to the radio.

He flipped the switch to the universal station and clicked the speaker button twice. He waited momentarily to let everyone switch to his channel. He lifted up the walkie-talkie to his mouth and pressed the button once more. “Attention all policemen and firefighters. Surround the building, fifty feet way on all sides. Wait for my signal.” He said as he clicked off the walkie-talkie. Not giving them any information, the police moved at a hurried pace, the firemen right behind them. It was no telling how long before they would catch wiff of the smoke.

Adrian walked back to the group and began speaking. “Leither…” He said out loud noticing baby Jackson. “Before you do anything rash, you might want to put him out of harms way…” He said, noticing the 3D-glasses on her face. He then turned his attention to the Masked man. “Let’s run, there’s no time to waste. I hope your guys can give you info on the run.” Adrian said as he turned heels and ran from the group, directly to the building, hoping the Masked man would follow. ‘God help us all…’

Ava

"What is taking them so long?" Ava demanding, tapping her foot impatiently behind the volatile Arsonist. Her dark cheeks were flushed with excitement, but that was growing to impatience while they all awaited the fateful encounter with Phasegirl. Sooner or later she would make her entrance, Ava had been assured of such by the Arsonist, but she had never been one to wait.

Not while her twin was sitting in a cooler full of strangers, at least. Though the thick walls of the refrigeration unit easily shielding the hostages from any of the bullets, hell - even the aging brick walls hadn't been pierced between the kitchen and the dining room - but the building was slowly and surely filling with smoke.

Even with the Arsonist here, Ava couldn't dispel her worry of the fire.

As if reading her mind, the Arsonist spoke in the slow, deliberate way the fourteen year old weapon had come to recognize. He was waiting, patient as ever, because he knew that no matter how long it had to wait the fire would always consume what it wanted. "They will come. All the world could be aflame, and they would come."

Ava shivered slightly, looked in the direction of her brother safe and sound behind the large steel door, and then willfully stilled her pacing.

While the others are distracted -- Mr. Lightning has darted in, dodging bullets and pulling a stray officer out of harm's way now and then, making his way towards the restaurant with standing orders for Leiter to stay - Leiter decides not to stay. Her parents are in there, and these idiot civilian vigilantes can b***h about how superheroes don't care anything for civilian buildings and s**t like that, but it's Leiter's parents' lives that are in the balance so ******** if they don't know anything.

She shifts without thought, her eyes already seeing the path through the 3-D glasses she swiped from the local theater. Turning sideways she slips away from this plane and into another, Jackson still in her arms.

He quiets down immediately as they enter a watery mirror of the plane they've just left, devoid of all people and sounds. The colors - the black of the pavement, the exterior of the building - are all softer than real life, and seem as though they're about to drip down; concrete things, like the hard right angle between the pavement and the building seem blurred. Leiter forges onwards, slipping Jackson back into her back in his baby sling.

Her baby is gurgling his delight here, and Leiter doesn't feel the strain of bringing another person into this plane, even though it wouldn't be much of one considering Jackson's size. Instead, it feels like he belongs here. Like here is reaching out to help them, help him as it helps Leiter. Phasegirl smiles grimly.

She reaches the restaurant to find the door has melted away. Leiter simply walks through the walls then, the color parting for her as though she slipped through a waterfall.

The restaurant's interior is as red as its outside, with gaudy lights hanging from the ceiling. Leiter walks through the empty room like a ghost, weaving through tables as she heads for the kitchen.

Once there, she feels for the seam back into the world - and turning sideways, slips through it.

The sounds of gunfire and shouts and real life slam her in an instant - gods, she'd forgotten what it's like to leave her silent, silent planes to return to the real world. She staggers to the side, Jackson wailing with their shared discomfort, and straightens, whirling.

"Where are they!" Leiter demands, a mental feeler still gripping the seam she's just left. A trick she's learned for a fast escape; Leiter can't take any chances.
