✮↻ WELCOME!

Salutations, fellow guild members and Whovians. I was asked by our lovely Captain Zoie, to make a guide to help people improve their rpings skills. First things first it takes practice, and patience. Please do not post in this thread. If you have any questions, and sections you would like me to add post them in the chat or pm me.

✮↻ DESCRIBE THINGS!

Which do you think looks better?
This: Bob ran down the hall. “Stop!” The cop yelled.

Or

This: Bob ran down the dimly lit hall of the station. His red sneakers sliding across the recently waxed tile floors. “Stop!” The fair haired cop yelled out of breath.

Remember when you write you are painting a picture with words. The more you describe the people, the surroundings, things of what you are writing about the easier it is for people to picture them. I don't mean you need to go all Tale Of Two Cities, but descriptions of people, places, and things really help make you post look better, more professional, and it will come out longer.

✮↻ THE PERFECT CHARACTER!

The key to creating a great character, is to have a flawed character. If your character is smart, beautiful, and always wins fights, people are going to hate them. (Not you hopefully.) Make sure the flaws and virtues of your character don't clash. They shouldn't be friendly and be antisocial at the same time. Unless they have some mental problems that is. Also try to refrain from the tragic past scenario when it comes to bios. The old my dad beat me, and the my parents died in a car crash gets tedious. Not every character needs to have a pity party for a bio. Yes, it is appropriate sometimes, but people with normal lives can become some of the best and most interesting characters.

✮↻ BE REALISTIC!

So, your character is surrounding by a group with knives and bats? Unless your character is Superman, they are not leaving that scene without a few cuts and bruises. Realism is another sign of being a better role player. You know that not every fight is winnable, not every plan is going to work out. Please note that I'm not saying that a character can not escape from a bad guy. It's when they escape unharmed, and too easy, and without effort that is unrealistic.

✮↻ BE SYNCHRONIZED!

Be in synch with what's is going on in a role play your are in is always a good thing. So, if you're in a rp that uses real images, you better use real images. If people are using a posting layouts, then you better use one too. Not every rp game master (GM) cares about this rule, but almost every literate-adv lit will in most cases. Remember if you're behind in the story just ask the someone. Most people especially the GM will gladly help you.

✮↻ DON'T RUSH!

Most rpers especially those in the adv lit department don't mind waiting for posts. Plus it is unfair to other people in the rp if you and someone else are moving thread along too rapidly.

✮↻ PLOTTING!

Free writing is/can be good, but knowing what you want write ahead of time is always a good idea. Even if it's just a basic idea for a post, or a plot. It is also good to plot with fellow rpers, so they know if you have any ideas. Most GMs will gladly hear your ideas. They may of have made the rp thread, but role playing is collaborative storytelling, so everyone should add to plot.

✮↻ USE NPCS!

NPC stands of None Playable Character, but in the rping community they are any extra characters you use. Some will be short in your time using them, others will be long term. They are a great tool for a rper to use. They can add more depth, and action to your post. Here is a recent post of my that
uses NPCs. XXX If you wanted more of an idea of how you can use NPCs or extra characters. Remember it is not necessary to use them, but they are a nice tool.

✮↻ KNOW YOUR COMFORT ZONE!

Knowing what you like, can do, and will try to do are great things to know when rping. Try to go out of your comfort zone, once in a while though. You might find that you actually like something you never thought you would.

Tip: Don't use the I can't/won't rp as this sex because I'm that sex excuse. It's probably one of the most annoying things rpers can say. No one is asking you to have a sex change, and you are not writing yourself, but a fictional character. The only rp with guys who play guys, and with girls who play girls is also annoying. It is perfectly fine if you prefer one sex over the other. I can play both, but I prefer guys. (Yes, I am a chick in case you were wondering.)

✮↻ OTHER TIPS!

Use the dictionary and thesaurus: They are your best friends when writing. Don't be afraid use big words. Having an ample vocabulary is a wonderful thing to have.

It's ok to make mistakes: Everyone does, even so called elites, and grammar nazis. I've seen plenty of grammar nazis who are horrible spellers for example. You can always go back a edit your post if needed. Almost everyone does, and usually more than once.

Font sizing and color: Never go above 12 or below 9. I personally prefer 11, it looks sleeker to me. When it comes to colors stay away from bright ones. People should not have to highlight your post in order to read it.
