With tense muscles ready to spring, Niko’s silver eyes followed the jackalope as it sniffed the ground for a snack of grass or mushrooms. His ears twitched in response to the slightest noise, listening for anything that might scare away the jackalope.. Relatively assured that the jackalope was at ease, unknowing of its potential prey, Niko’s claws pressed into the muddy earth and just as he sprung, a white blur jumped from a nearby cliff sending the jackalope sprinting into a hollowed tunnel in the earth. Niko growled and transformed from his wolf form. His brows came together in a fit of anger at the white wolf that was staring at him, amused. “Dammit, Angel,” he snarled.
Angel also transformed from her wolf form with a smirk present on her pale pink lips, the amused look in her deep blue eyes never ceasing. Despite a storm that recently passed leaving the woods dampened and muddy, the female demon looked pristine with her pure white hair and milk skin. “What? You don’t have any human meat to eat?” she asked, smugly.
“Where’s the rest of the pack?” Niko asked, his ears turning this way and that listening for any others. His pack continued to raise him after his parents were killed but, since then he preferred to keep to himself traveling and exploring; especially places in the mortal realm. They didn’t understand his desire to know about the human world and its workings and often publicly expressed their views. Especially Angel and her group; she never passed up an opportunity to mock him. Although they were the same age, Angel felt herself superior to near everything except maybe the Alpha.
Angel shrugged, her tail swaying from side to side as it always did when she made a point to look innocent. “They’re out hunting real meat,” she replied. “I wonder if one day they’ll bring back a human. It might be a tasty treat.”
More interested in finding a meal than fueling another argument, Niko turned on his heels and walked in the opposite direction he saw Angel come. Her friends were never too far and often their disagreements became physical much to the displeasure of the Alpha. He was never too harsh though, figuring they were simply going through a rebellious stage. And as loathe as Niko was to admit it at times, he was still part of the pack. It didn’t matter if he lived in his own den, as far from them as he could get and still live in a suitable area. The Alpha still held him accountable for his actions; Niko often felt he was more lenient when it came to Angel and he didn’t need to be summoned for another conflict.
By the time another dinner option became available, the suns had passed below the mountains and the moons were only an hour or two from hanging directly above the lands. A creature with bluish purple skin that shimmered in the moonlight, called a layra, took a brief glance around with its large black eyes before plopping itself on a fallen tree. They relied mostly on sight having ears that looked more like tiny buds atop their heads. More than likely it would bury itself in the leaves that were still attached to branches creating a makeshift shelter for the night. The larya would know something was approaching when the leaves rattled against their skin, putting them into a defensive mode. Standing about two feet high from head to toe, layras had a long and lanky tail that served as a whip to stunt their prey before the layra quickly killed it with lengthy teeth that protruded from their lips. Their scrawny arms and legs also had sharp talon like nails that were used for climbing and digging. The layra jumped into a cluster of leaves and settled into a niche. Stilling the air, Niko jumped above the creature and reached through the leaves yanking the screeching layra out by its neck. Blood dripped from the cut on his arm where the layra whipped at him twice. Still holding the layra, Niko used his other hand to twist its head until the creature’s neck snapped making three distinct cracks. The layra stopped twitching and hung limp in his hand with its mouth hanging open revealing a second set of small teeth; it almost made being whipped by its tail look preferable to being bit.
Once Niko was back at his den with a fire blazing in a small stone pit, he began to skin his dinner with his sharp claws. Some demons preferred their meat raw. Niko only liked raw meat when he was in his wolf form. Not that it tasted any different whether he was in his wolf form or not, it was just one of his quirks. He could hear the other members of his pack howling and laughing in the distance probably enjoying a feast. A few Elders had tried to convince Niko to join on more than one occasion but he always found a way to decline their offer without insulting them. He glanced up at the starless sky, a rich velvety blue adorned only by the two silvery white moons. In the human world, he always enjoyed watching the stars twinkle in the night sky all the way until dawn.
Juice from the layra meat was dripping down into the flame making sizzling and popping noises indicating the meat was cooked. Over a flame, the meat turned a few shades darker and could be cooked until it was black. A deep purple gave the juiciest bite Niko had found out. It wasn’t his favorite type of meat but it was a meal and he was alone. His mind drifted back to Angel’s words about humans being tasty meat. His nose scrunched at the thought. Sure he had tasted meats humans eat but, eating a human just did not sound appetizing. They would be easy prey though. He snorted at the thought. Humans were certainly interesting and created intriguing things they called cars and buildings but, they were sometimes oblivious.
Under a heavy step, he could hear sticks snapping as one of his pack traveled close to his den. However unlikely it was that the other wolf demon would come into sight, Niko was in no mood to socialize or hear the stories Angel had more than likely spread through the wolf grape vine. His foot smothered the fire as he stood up and then he was gone. The forest he chose in the mortal realm was one that was deserted except for the animals that inhabited it. At least, he had never found anything to suggest there were humans around. Niko stretched and turned into his wolf form, pushing off the dense ground to break into an easy sprint. It wasn’t until a faint whiff of burning wood reached his nose that he slowed. There couldn’t have been a fire in the forest or else the stench would be overwhelming and animals would be fleeing in all directions. Curiously, he traveled towards the source and found a wooden house in the middle of the forest.
How strange, he thought. What was a house doing so far from the human towns? Was it even a human who was making use of it? Niko wasn’t quite sure what else it could have been; other demons roamed the mortal realm, some in plain view of the unsuspecting humans but, they mostly intended on causing mischief. Rather than stare and wonder all night, he scouted closer until he picked up a human scent among others; deer, rabbit, some sort of bird, blood. He remained a few hundred yards from the wooden house, watching and waiting. This was far more interesting than the humans in the cities. Humans were different when they were alone.

It's often just enough to be with someone. I don't need to touch them. Not even talk. A feeling passes between you both. You're not alone. [ ♥ ] ౦ ● ౦ {ℓ ø я ι ℓ ε ι Ðanica p α x t ø и } ౦ ●౦ [ ♥ ] αll wε kиøw is fαlliиg uи∂εя мy §pεll Tħε ℓøηεя I don't want to be alone, I want to be left alone! Silence. The forest was filled with silence, silence caused by a lack of humans, a lack of the honking and swearing, shouting and yelling, the bright lights and loud sounds that always seemed to fill the air when a group of humans all got together. If there was one thing that Lorelei had learned as she lived away from the rest of them, was that she appreciated the solitude that could be found when one searched for themselves away from the large groups of people that took away individuality and personalities and made everyone conform. Lorelei had followed in her mother's, grandmother's, great-grandmother's and so forth, footsteps by leaving everything behind and to go searching for herself - and her true name, as every Gypsy woman had done before her.
She was quite proud of her heritage and it brought her the chance of leaving the city and becoming her own person. Her cherry-colored hair bounced as she pushed open the cabin door and stepped outside into the forest, closing her bright blue eyes as she took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of honeysuckle, pine and wildflowers. A bright, relaxed smile spread across her face, revealing small dimples that seemed to just make her face look more childish than the actual age of older teen that she really was. It annoyed her that everyone thought she was twelve or thirteen when she actually happened to be sixteen almost seventeen years old.
Lorelei picked up the empty wooden pail that rested next to the now-open cabin door as she stepped her bare feet on to the soft grass and decaying bark, her toes curling at the familiar, natural feeling as her orange-as-a-sunset sundress twirled in the breeze as she skipped down the small little hill, completely ignoring the fact that the entire forest was too still and too quiet for it to be completely natural. After several minutes of skipping through the naturally dim forest without a care, as her eyes had long since adjusted to the dimly lit forest, she paused at the bank of one of the streams that ran through the local area and dipped the pail into the stream, collecting a good amount of water before she stood up and headed back into her cabin before she poured a large amount of the water into a small pan and began heating it before she grabbed a per-prepared plate and headed outside and set it down on the ground before she hurried back inside to the water, leaving the berries, slice of bread and the left-over rabbit meat from the night before as an offering to the animals who lived around her.
If it was one thing that her people taught her, it was to respect the nature around her - and she did, for everything that she took away from animals, she gave back, by leaving bits of food, clean water and suitable housing that she made so that it would be an equal sharing of the land that they all lived on.
[[Sorry about the shortness, I had to write four five-page long essays and my inspiration has been killed for the day...and probably tomorrow.]]

As the human girl stepped out from the little wooden house, Niko was instantly captivated. Not only by her bright orange dress but also because of how beautiful she was. Despite the fact that her dress could have been mistaken for a miniature sun, she shone like the suns and moons in the Underworld. There was no doubt she was unlike any other human that he had ever met; probably unlike any others in the mortal realm. Without getting too close, he followed her down to the small stream, watching as she carried her bucket back to the house to apparently make dinner.
Niko approached the house but quickly hid as he heard the door open again. He watched as she put a plate of food out and retreated once again. This time, Niko waited longer to be sure she wasn't coming back out and pursued the food on the plate. Rabbit and berries were mortal things he had tasted before but, the tan spongy looking thing he had never gotten much of a look at it. Quickly checking that the girl was still preoccupied, he pawed at it and snatched it between his teeth and then bolted behind some brush. The human food tasted rather dry, and someone without much flavor. It also made him thirsty.
Since he didn't want to risk getting that close to the house again, he ran down to the stream and drank. As he licked his lips, he wondered if the human lived there or was just staying temporarily. There were no other human scents so Niko was relatively certain she was there alone. When he returned, there was a soft place on the ground that he could look upon an open window, watching as the girl wandered about the house, just watching curiously. A bear cub waddled lazily towards the house, picking up the rabbit meat between its paws before settling on the ground to eat its free meal. After it had gone, a few deer picked at the berries and pranced off after they were done. None of the animals dared near get near the wolf though save for a few birds. It was a very quiet forest. Oddly quiet he thought.
