I mean, it must take a lot of effort on Snape's part for Neville to know unquestioningly that he fears him more than Bella, Barty, Rabba and Rudolph. What's more, whatever Neville fears him for, Snape seems to be holding it over his head. OotP "Moronic though some of this class undoubtedly are, I expect you to scrape an "Acceptable" in your OWL, or suffer my... displeasure." His gaze lingered this time on Neville, who gulped. So what do you guys think? I have a shrewd idea, but let's see what you have to say.

Ooh yay! Well, first off, Snape is a terrible person. He goes out of his way to humiliate Neville from book 1. He's as bad as Neville's family, who always treated him as they would a squib, say their proud of him, even though they want more from him, and scold him for things that probably aren't his fault. My theory on why Snape picks on Neville specifically has to do with the Prophecy. Snape was the one who told Voldemort, and either Harry or Neville could be the chosen one. But Voldemort chose Harry. This coincides with my theory that Snape was in love with Lily. Lily died because Voldemort chose Harry. Perhaps Snape wished it was Neville so that Lily might still be alive. And he feels much guilt that she's dead, and Neville being there and alive is a constant reminder.
But for what reason is Neville afraid of him? That takes more thought... Perhaps Neville senses Snapes evil from the beginning. I would like that. Or maybe it's a continuation that Snape is just a horrible person to him. And Snape puts effort into seeming evil.

Besides, in that case, he would have nothing personal against Snape. He definitely has something personal against other Death Eaters, and he's actually somewhat afraid of his gran, too. ( sad )

The problem with that is, assuming Neville was present, it would take a Dementor encounter to make him remember it. Seeing as he was one year old at the time. However, it's perfectly plausible if there was such a Dementor encounter, because Snape isn't in Azkaban like the others and would thus be more feared. Oh, wait, of course there was a Dementor encounter, because he only revealed this fear in third year.
But anyway, I have another idea.
Harry can't see Thestrals until OotP because when his parents died, he was too young to fully appreciate death, but Neville apparently wasn't. What if he witnessed Snape murdering his grandfather? I have no idea what the motive might have been, seeing as we know nothing about Neville's grandfather, but his grandather's death does need explaining.

Hmmm... I always assumed his grandfather died of old age or sickness, possibly in a hospital or something...

Yup, I'm one of the few that say "Snape may not be on the bad side, but he's still an evil person."

Oh, think he is on the bad side and an evil person, but most people seem to think he is a good person. Which I really can't understand.....

I'm with you guys.. I can't really understand how people think that Snape is so wonderful. They think that he is just misunderstood.. wtf? It's the same with the rest of the slytherins. I guess people just don't want to like the people they are supposed to and hate them instead. Who knows.... Anywho.. I think Snape always putting Neville down and not letting him succeed in anything in his eyes reminds him of his Gran. Perhaps Neville is afraid of not pleasing people, of not being good enough.
Yeah that seems.. Plausible.

Prophecies: The one with the power to vanquish the dark lord approaches ... Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies ... And the dark lord will mark him as equal, but he will have power the dark lord knows not ... And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives. (OP37) According to Dumbledore, this prophecy might have referred to Neville until Voldemort "marked" Harry.
Hmmm..makes you wonder doesn't it? I'm quite intrigued with how Neville plays out in this whole plot. He's definately going to play a BIG part in the last book. I just know it!
