New Jersey man throws intestines at cops after repeatedly stabbing himself

HACKENSACK, N.J. – A New Jersey man was in critical condition Wednesday after repeatedly stabbing himself with a 12-inch knife and throwing his intestines at cops.

Wayne Carter, who has a history of psychiatric problems, had barricaded himself inside his Hackensack, N.J., home when the gruesome event took place late Sunday, The Record reported Tuesday.

Police were called to the house after the 43-year-old was spotted cutting himself with the knife.

When they arrived at the scene, Carter refused to drop the weapon and began waving it -- along with a hammer -- at the officers. He then repeatedly stabbed himself in the legs, abdomen and neck.

Hackensack Police Lt. Timothy Lloyd told the Cliffview Pilot, "They tried to talk him down, but they were having no luck. He was slashing at them with the knife."

When he began throwing pieces of skin and intestines at the officers, they called in the Bergen County Police Department's SWAT team, Lloyd said.

By the time they arrived, Carter's intestines were "literally" hanging out of his body, an unnamed police official told the Pilot.

"The scene was a bloody mess," the official said. "The SWAT team members had to be decontaminated due to the amount of blood."

Carter was eventually disarmed after being sprayed with two cans of pepper spray and was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery early Monday.

Not the greatest ranged weapon ever... But if he's infected with a communicable disease like HIV, then it is actually considered a lethal weapon.

As a healthcare provider, I can't help but wonder at our medical system and society. Here we are spending vast resources on saving this lunatic. Then again, maybe he was psychologically unbalanced and is salvageable. You can't play God and decide who we should save and who we shouldn't.

So, should we be saving him?
What sort of prison should this guy go to?
What do you think about this seemingly sudden increase in bizarre events - intestine throwing, face eating, cannibalism?

Forget for a second what's going on in Wayne's mind. What the heck is going on in the cops head? The man is slashing himself and throwing internal organs at you. What do you do? You go for his eyes? Do you think he feels pain at the moment?
Hey guys one can isn't working.
What do we do?
Get another one!

All I can think is, "How long did this go on?" How much blood did he loose?

Ok, the guy is throwing his intestines around let's just back off let him tire himself out and call the medics.

Hat's off to you Ace for finding these crazy stories. There is no way I would have ever known people are capable of such behavior.

The sad thing is I'm not even TRYING to find these nutty stories.

You have a good point, one I wondered about too. Another thing: the police came because he was cutting himself. Um...why are we wasting police time stopping that? After all, they DIDN'T stop it. They just made it worse. In my mind, like you say, if he's cutting himself, you need to try another approach.

I'm guessing cops came to this scene vs an ambulace because the guy was actively wielding a weapon. Whether against himself or another, medical crews wait until weapons are down before moving in.

Here's a question; if pepper spray isn't working, why not a human-sized tranquilizer dart? If there are such things for animals I'd assume there is such for humans, right? As for dealing with him at all, well, cops get called to the scene of a suicide jumper to try and talk the person out of it, so it does make sense that someone hurting themselves like this would receive aid.

My guess is he's got psych problems and will wind up in a secure psych hospital of some sort. I'd like to know what led up to this; clearly things had to be going on in the background and over the past months or so to result in this!

As for the increase, is there really an increase in number of such events, or just in our awareness of them? World shrinking via communication, reporting and human fascination with the bizarre and all that. It's one of those nature-nurture type questions, I think.
