Prologue: Once, humans and angels lived together. When they reached the age of sixteen, a human and an angel would bond, having found the other half of their soul. Angels were our good halves, we were their bad halves. Together, we held back the Demon races from destroying our world. But all it took was one man to ruin it all. He was Edward, soul mate of Kiradikash, princess of the angels, who glowed with the power of the heavens, and he with the dangerous darkness. That very same darkness which brought about the Fall. Moonlight bathed the mountains in the distance first, shining her silvery rippling light across the glittering snow and slippery ice, making everything look freezing cold before slowly edging her way down to the plains and ice-covered lake, making a flawlessly beautiful setting for anyone who cared enough to notice. Few did.
As the moonlight neared a giant crack in the ice on the lake, the atmosphere tensed. As the moonlight shone on the unfrozen water in the crack, as if that was a silent signal, the peaceful winter night turned into a bloodbath.
Warriors with wings, tails, claws and fangs burst out of nowhere, sliding through invisible gaps between worlds. Some began shifting rapidly in midair. No matter how tiring that was, it was disgusting and threatening enough that no one wanted to fight them.
Kiradikash looked around desperately. She needed to end this, and quickly! But there was no sign of the Demon king, Dirakesh. She hissed in annoyance, reverting to her natural form without blinking an eye, and swiftly thrusting herself upward with her wings.
She could feel Edward's annoyance. Of course the coward wouldn't even come.
Don't get distracted. She warned him.
I know. You, too! His panic alerted her to the Demon directly in front of her, coming down right on top of her. She swerved desperately and slashed at the creature in mid-shift. It was a horrible sight, a mix of all kinds of slimy things with claws and fangs. It's blood was a mix of colors, swirling and shifting together. It took everything they had not to be simultaneously sick.
She looked down from her vantage point and saw the Demons surrounding her people. Shrieking a savage war cry, Kira folded her wings and dropped like a stone. Edward caught her, pinning her arms and wings with a cord of willow. But.... you know what willow does to me and my powers! She thought at him frantically. Her eyes widened at his cold gaze.
Edward.....?
She couldn't feel his presence in her mind, that had been there since they bonded. She couldn't hear his thoughts, feel his emotions. He was gone. Replaced by this cruel demon wearing a mask that looked like her Edward, but wasn't, couldn't possibly be!
Okay, Demon infestation....step one: Make the possessed aware of the situation. How? Searching her memories, she found plenty that would wake Edward up, none she wanted a Demon seeing.
“Edward....” she whispered, the painful realization washing through her. He'd betrayed them all. “Why?”
“You never knew.” he replied.
“Never knew what?” she asked, confused and hurt.
“I lost my family because we bonded and the Demons went after them to get to you. But no, you didn't care....You kept going. I'm only human. My family was all I had.”
“You had me!” she protested, aware of how horribly selfish that sounded.
He snorted. “Do you even believe that anymore? I never had you. Everyone and everything else always came first. I stopped trusting you a long time ago.”
Kira could only stare at him in hopeless horror. Darkness descended and the Demons cried out in triumph. The Greed clan were the first to flee, and take over the human world, then Jealousy. The rest followed soon after.
Edward faded from view as Chaos whirled through the once-peaceful valley in a storm of dust and violent images. Kira gathered her people as best she could and took them to the one safe place left.
Slan....
Literally translating to 'keep safe', it was a place enchanted by angels when they first trusted humans to always protect both races from Demons. Now, it was the only safe place left for anyone.
Kira dropped from the sky like a stone, plummeting through the skylight into her office. “Barricade all entrances and exits! I want this place closed off!” she ordered, and snapped at anyone who questioned her that the Demons had won, that they had been betrayed.
Ignoring the shock-filled faces of those around her, she slammed the door to her private chambers and, like a young girl, threw herself facedown on the bed and cried. Her heart shattered into a billion tiny, sparkling, bloody pieces that night.
And with it, shattered the happy future of the world.
Years, decades, and centuries passed. Slan remained closed off from the rest of the world. The humans and angels who were inside when it was closed remained, trapped in a separate world. They separated the academy into two sections of learning. One for angels, one for humans. Eventually, both races forgot about each other. Their half of Slan was the only world they ever knew. Eventually, the human side opened back up to the rest of the world as Slan Academy, in the countryside of Ireland. The angels watched over, but never interacted with, the humans that might have been their closest friends, the other halves of their souls.
