2012 Summer Writing Contest
Theme: Memories Must include: The beach, Fruit, A Chair, either a bird or flying insect, and a character must exhibit a special skill (magic counts, but not many points for originality)
Hello everyone, it’s a bit late into the summer season, but here we are with our summer themed writing contest! A few things have changed, in order to make things a little easy for us (the judges) and hopefully leave you feeling like you got something other than gold out of this whole situation.
The first change is with the word count. I have been messing around these last few contests, trying to find a good range. The last one was a little long for judging, so I the new word count is from 1500 to 5500.
The second change is with the prizes. Some people felt that the second prize should be higher, so first place gets 50,000 gold and second place gets 25,000 gold. Hopefully this new prize system works out better.
And the last and largest change is with the judges contributions. We will be posting comments and critiques about the submissions when the winners are announced. This should help the contestants improve themselves for the next contest! :]
And so, with that, here are some things that we will be focusing on (we may or may not use a 1-5 point counter system. I need to think about it, I will try and post when I decide):
-Originality: The story must be new and exciting. As writers, and avid readers, we have probably come into contact with all the unoriginal stuff many times already. Please spare us from more.
-Spelling/ Grammer: It takes away from the story if we are always stopping and shaking our heads at the really obvious stuff. We read to enjoy, not correct mistakes.
-Plot: Even if you have amazing characters and setting, if what they are doing doesn’t make sense, all is for naught.
-Structure/ Organization: Although this is just a short story, it still should have multiple scenes. The flow from scene to scene should be seamless and naturally lead to the next idea.
-Characters: Just as I said before with plot, even if you have an amazing plot, if they characters within it are flat, it is hard to invest in who they are and what they are doing.
Alright, and that is it for the contest. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. And don’t forget, have fun! :]

Hello to all who plan on entering the Summer writing contest! I'm Evi I help our beloved guild captain with random stuff, including judging a few contests! I helped with the last Writing contest, they were all really good by the way, it was hard to pick a winner. Also on that note it was pretty much my fault it took so long to pick a winner, I had too much going on school wise and Grades do come before pleasure sadly enough, so I apologize for that.
I just wanted to add onto what AuroraCelestine was saying about the grammar and spelling and such. I wanted to give you fair warning that I'm a bit of a grammar fanatic, if I find any mistakes I will mention them, it bothers me when I see such blatant mess ups, such as the wrong use of "to, too, and two" or "there, their, and they're" I realize that English is a hard language to grasp, and if it isn’t your native language then I can understand there being mistakes. That being said, if it is your native language, you should have no problem with at least those two examples above ... hopefully. I will keep in mind that nothing is perfect, so I won't lean too much on mistakes.
And as for Spelling, just try to keep the errors to words that it makes sense to misspell, I myself am horrible at spelling, thank whatever deity is out there for Spell check! Because God knows that without it I'd be bald from pulling out my hair in frustration. So as long as I can understand what the word was meant to be, I think I can let those slide … for the most part anyway.
And if any of you would like I would be open to the idea of giving anyone who PMs me a once through edit, no feedback (because I will be helping with judging) but I’ll go through and fix some of the more obvious mistakes if you’d like.
I'm sorry if that came off as mean or rude or anything of the like but I have read numerous stories by many authors posted around the web and you would be surprised with some of the mistakes I've seen. Especially in exceptionally well written stories! I just want to help you all further your writing abilities abilities and if I'm stuck playing editor I can't help too much. So help me, help you, help me not have a migraine.
I hope you all have a good day,
~ Evi

Alright, well as usual, I'll be participating in this contest. Although it was only a few months ago, I'd like to think I've come a long way since my last project, so it'll be very interesting for me to see how this entry turns out.

I'm just doing the final finishing touches on my project now. Sorry I took so long. It'll be finished either tonight, or tomorrow. Depending on how happy I am with it, and how easily I can fit a fruit into the narrative. I uh, sort of forgot about that one.
