Pudding
Star

Star's paw prints dotted the beach. She'd come down here earlier, mostly to just...think. After only one night, she met a cat with no face, a guy with metal limbs, and a hyper-active monkey girl. It was almost as bad as New Bark Town. Almost. After a few seconds of just standing and watching the ocean, she sat down, being careful not to get any sand in her shorts.
The waves hit the beach like Ekanses. The waved forward, waved back, in an almost zig zag pattern. That never stopped, even when the sound of quiet footsteps invaded this peaceful place.
One of Star's ears perked up and turned towards the sound. Once she was aware that the thing making the sound was no threat, her head turned.
Pudding was walking up the beach towards her, kicking little shells when they found their way to her foot. Her head was held low, her bangs hanging just enough to cover her eyes. Her hands where tethered behind her back. She hadn't yet spotted Star.
Quietly, Star watched, with a bit of interest.
Pudding started to shuffle, and almost ran into Star. She looked up a bit. Her eyes seemed red. She hid her face again, and smiled weakly, ploping down next to Star. "Hi..."
Star didn't wave, or reply. She just furrowed her eyebrows and looked back out, her knees now held to her chest.
Pudding continued smiling, but it was very weak. It was hard to hold any sadness in. "You like the attic, right? It has enough furniture for you? Don't worry, well get some more up there."
Star, again didn't answer. Heck, she never spoke. It was like her number one rule.
Pudding sighed and looked forward again. "Star-san...have you ever loved someone, but...they didn't love you back?"
Star looked toward Pudding. Yes, she had. Once. But she didn't want to go into that. She was interested in why such a young girl seemed so...heartbroken.
Pudding's eyes twitched. She did her best to fight the tears that were coming. "I told him that I did...let him see. But...I knew he didn't. I was so sure, though, that maybe...just maybe..." She couldn't continue. Small tears were starting to stream down her face.
Star frowned. 'Such a small girl...not even a woman yet...and still she suffers heartbreak.' Her head turned away, though she was still interested in what Pudding was saying.
Pudding sniffled a bit. "Stupid me...why am I crying?" She wiped a tear from her eye and grinned weakly. But the waterworks kept running. "It's not like I expected him to say the same. I knew it was just a silly, childhood crush. But why...oh why does it hurt. Is this...how Ichigo felt after Masaya turned into Deep Blue?" Pudding turned away. It felt like a disgrace to let someonelse see her crying.
Star sighed. 'Because, kid, it always does...' Of course, she wouldn't say it aloud, but hopefully, her message got through.
Pudding gave up, and just let the tears keep coming. "He couldn't ever love me back...it wasn't possible. It never was."
Star shook her head. She should just get up and leave.
Yet, she didn't. She was suprised with herself. How could someone as cold and heartless as her not leave a crying kid on her own? Star had her problems, and she shouldn't care about anyone else's...right?
Pudding hiccuped. "Star-san?"
Star turned her head, and her eyes widened with suprise.
Pudding had flung herself onto Star, and was now sobbing into her sweater, hugging her tightly. Habit, or was she just really lonely? We may never know.
Star looked like she had a big bug on her face. 'Get off....get off get off get off!' She would push her away, but she couldn't find it in herself to do that...after a few seconds of realization, Star sighed and put a paw on Pudding's head, stroking it lightly. And, without Star even noticing that she was doing so, she started to hum. It was something her mom had hummed to her when she was afraid at night. Her voice was melodic, and soothing. Like a bird's.
The waves once again receded. It had been the fifth time since Pudding had started clinging onto Star. The sound of the waves gave Star's lullaby some rhythm...a soft beat that would put almost anyone to sleep.
Star finished, and growled to herself. 'Stupid kid...' She looked down at Pudding angrily.
Pudding had fallen asleep. One wondered how she always had so much energy and hardly ever slept...it was rare to see her sleeping so peacefully.
Star swiftly stood up and picked up Pudding, throwing her over her shoulder. She huffed under the weight a bit, but started heading home. 'I guess...the kid's not that bad. Not that bad at all.'
