I've been playing Phoenix Wright lately, and a thought occurred to me.

Why not have a courtroom RP? Cases could be decided on by the GM, and people could sign up as defence attorneys, prosecutors, witnesses and investigators. The GM could appoint a judge for every case.

Defence attorneys would aim for the acquittal of their client, and maybe even have someone else sentenced for the crime, but ultimately, an acquittal is what you want.

Prosecutors would shoot for the guilty verdict of the defendant. They would also work with the investigators.

Witnesses are well, witnesses. They would testify as to what happened, or if fate is cruel, become another suspect due to the evidence.

Investigators would absorb the bulk of the information from a crime scene, and part of their responsibilities would be to provide autopsy reports and to condense information for the court.

Judges would be the hefty, impartial hand of the law, handing down verdicts and watching over the court.

Under-handed tactics, like bribery or forged evidence, could be involved as well, but that can wait for now.

I'm more than aware of the difficulties with what I'm suggesting. Especially witness testimonies and investigations of crime scenes. Even though this could probably be a lot less complicated, I'd like to hear some thoughts on this.

If you could pull this off it would be probably the single most innovative RP I've ever seen. Problems sure, but I can't foresee anything that would make it impossible, or even that hard, just different.

Do it bro. Do it.

Heh, I'm glad someone thinks it could be good. But it'd need an absolutely ridiculous amount of organization to do properly. Needless to say, there'd need to be a lot of people behind the scenes to have this even get off the ground.

I think this has great potential and can be pulled off.

The best way I am able to see it working out is by a group organizing a case at a time. You'd need a minimum of 4 people to pull it off. Each one could only be told a part of the story.

PC Playable Characters required -
Judge
Defense Attorney
Prosecutor
Defendant (Rotating per case)

Additional Playable Roles -
Jury Members (Limit 1, as too many jury members just posting that "X sat there and listened intently to the defendant's case" would get old ultra fast.)
Witnesses/Testimonials (Limit 1-2, these would have to be *specifically* linked to the case, i.e. the defendant's family; or for more serious crimes, victims and/or their family members)
Specialists (Limit 1, typically a doctor or detective providing testimonial proof)

For instance:

The writing team comes up with a case where the Defendant is accused of first degree murder.

The Defendant is told by the team that they are innocent, and the details of what the defendant's alibi or lack thereof exists, such as "I was out of town that weekend" etc. It is up to the defendant how they want to play it. It could be something really embarrassing as an alibi like "I couldn't have killed her! I was... cheating on her at her sister's place..." etc.

The Prosecutor is told by the writing team evidence that suggests the Defendant did it. Such as a positive motive, like the husband/wife had a big insurance plan that paid out on their death to the defendant. Physical evidence and witnesses could also be presented to the Prosecutor by the writing team.

The Defense Attorney is told by the writing team what the Defendant is accused of, but *NOT* told whether they are actually innocent or not. They are given some evidence and testimonials (character witnesses etc.) to try to prove their client's innocence or earn acquittal, innocent by brief insanity is always a popular route as well :3

The Judge is only told the bare bones of the story (i.e. what the Defendant is accused of) and must listen to the case to draw their own conclusion.

The additional characters (Witnesses/Specialists etc.) can be played by a single person or multiple, but they could only be given one piece of information which they are to repeat back when it is their time on the stand. What they say in *Response* to questions by the Defense Attorney or the Prosecutor however, is *completely improvised*.

We could make the defendant guilty in some scenarios, throw in the moral crisis for the defense attorneys. Get an acquittal for a guilty suspect, or lose the trial and have them sentenced.

I'd love to have some under-handed dealings in this though. Building onto what I said earlier, maybe an attorney has their life being threatened. The exchange being an acquittal for their client in exchange for being able to live.

Or something.

LOL this kinda reminds me of mock trials in law class. Sounding fun so far. <3

I'd be willing to come up with some crime ideas for you but I know nothing about law so couldn't help with the other end of it.

Mel knows some fun forensic things she can toss in if you want some advice on evidence stuff.

As much as I'd like to get this going, I don't think it can be me who spearheads it. I'm not terribly organized, so if I took charge of this, it'd turn out really cluttered. sweatdrop

Alright folks, I've decided to give this a shot against my better judgement. blaugh

I'm currently thinking up the story, ergo, I don't think I'm allowed to directly participate. At least, I can't have a major role. I'm trying to keep it simple. We will be following the fantastic outline that Tonash Drahow gave us, however, changes'll be made if necessary. But with all of this in mind...

Would anyone be willing to give this a try? I'll need a judge, defense attorney, prosecutor, defendant, a witness, and the plaintiff/victim. I'll provide stories, and some freedom will be allowed if you really want to flesh out a character.

:lurks:

Yeah, I'm game.

I'll fill whatever role is needed, plus I can come up with a few ideas for cases too.
