"How are you able to stand looking at me?" This was the first question that he had ever heard from her; actually, it was the first that she had actually spoken to him. The first time he ever heard her vocalize was that fateful night he stumbled into her den. Quite literally actually.

It was towards nightfall when he first met her. The only way he was able to know this was the heat of the sun wasn't hitting him as hard as it did during midday. Tap, tap when his stick when suddenly he felt nothing under his guide. He stopped short, trying to find where the ground went. That was when he heard the hissing. He froze. A scream rent the air; startled, he stepped back and tripped over a tree root. The hissing continued. If there was one thing that made his uneasy, it was snakes. It wasn't because of what they could do to him, but it was what he would end up of doing to them. He couldn't see them…he could see much of anything really. All that he could see was vague shapes and areas of light and dark.

Soon the hissing died down, but the sound of steps had taken its place. Rustling steps, like that of a snake whispering through the grass. He stayed still, not sure of what was happening, other than there seemed to be a figure approaching him. The rustling stopped as the figure kneeled down in front of him. All he could see was blackness and what seemed to be weaving ropes from the figure's head.

"Who are you?" he asked, trying to look as though he was looking at whoever the figure in front of him was. It was a trick that he had learned over the years, to make it seem as though he could actually see the person in front of him. There was no reply, though the hissing increased. He froze again. The dark figure in front of him leaned forward. Whoever it was filled his vision; he blinked. The ropes on…her head, were moving. Well, he could see what gender she was now. He could see enough of her that he could tell that her head was cocked to one side.

She moved back and stood up. He stayed on the ground, trying to keep her in his limited sight but she was soon gone. After a bit, he also stood up. Taping his guiding staff on the ground again, he slowly and surely made his way down the hillside, straining his ears to find the sound of hissing. It seemed that she was connected to snakes.

The smell of snakes grew stronger the further he went into what seemed to be stone gully. Soon, it was dark enough that he had to depend completely on the sound of his tap, tap, taping guide and his improved touch, smell, and hearing. Soon, he could hear the sharp tapping of his staff echoing and bouncing off of walls. He could also hear gentle sobbing.

"Are you okay?" he called out, hearing his voice echo and rebound back to him quickly. The sobbing stopped. The hissing started up again, sounding as if it was all around him. He made his way further into the rocky opening till he could feel body heat. It was the girl. He reached a hand out to her. "I'm sorry if something I did earlier somehow offended you. I didn't mean to scare you either if that's what happened…" he said, standing in front of her. He offered her his hand, to help pull her up. "But if I did, I'll do what I can to make it up to you, if you'll let me." He smiled, hoping that she would let him. He stood in front of her, his hand hanging in empty air. Maybe it wasn't a good idea for him to have followed her, but he had felt the need to at least make sure she was alright.

It was when he felt her small hand slide into his that his smile fell away into a full out grin. Maybe they both needed a companion for a little while.

Beautiful. It really sounds like it's describing the scene of the artist's image.
