•Creating A Character•
Welcome to your first lesson. This will teach you the basics of character creation.

Here is the basic frame for the average character sheet.

Character/Profile Sheet
Name:
Age:
Race:
Occupation:
Appearance:
Weapons:
Skills/Abilities:
Personality:
Bio:
Other:

Let's dissect this form, explaining the use of each one while creating a good example for the upcoming War RP.

Character/Profile Sheet
Name: Nest Rees

The name. The importance of a name can't be stressed enough. It's the name that forwards the character's first impression on the others you are RPing with.

When deciding on a name, think of the context. By context, think of time period and location. When you're RPing in a Medieval RP, you would need a name that best fits into the theme. A name like Jarred Lion heart, would fit fairly well. The name sounds old, and fits with the time. And from the last name, you would think that he'd either be a knight or a peasant aspiring to become one.

The name sets the mood for the entire character. Try to add a sense of uniqueness to your characters, as well. Your character is your own, and you should make it sound like no one else. Although, in some cases, using the standard is okay, and even encouraged.

Character/Profile Sheet
Age: 24

The age, although minor in some cases, determines what your character is capable of. Old characters, late forties and so on, won't be as strong as younger character because they are older. Unless there is a specific reason, older characters are generally weaker than younger ones. Vice versa, younger characters, early twenties to late thirties, are filled with vitality and strength. Characters in that age bracket are encouraged if you are planning to crate a very active character.

Not only does age set your characters physical limitations, but the character's mental abilities, as well. The younger your character, the more naive they are and less likely to create complex plans or understand more complicated matters, even if the RPer controlling them understands.

Character/Profile Sheet
Race: Human

Race is another factor in determining your character's physical and mental abilities. Humans, for example, are known for determination, courage, greed, and cowardice. Like wise, characters of this race will share these qualities. Some characters are different from others, so how much these traits apply will differ, but in most cases, all characters of that race will share some form of those traits.

Also, characters with that race are obliged to accept their race's weaknesses. Human, for example, aren't as strong as demons of dragons. Unless specified elsewhere in the character sheet, characters of the human race won't ever be as strong as demon characters. Vice versa, all characters of a particular race will share its strengths. Therefore, all human characters will have strong loyalties and determination, or cunning reasoning abilities and good instincts.

Character/Profile Sheet
Occupation:Solder

The character's occupation decides what skills they have. Unless the character is unique in a particular way (more on that later), most will be bound by their occupation/class. This character for example is Human Solder. This means that his skills will be limited only to what the character can possibly know after undergoing that particular training. In this case, the character would have basic abilities in most forms of weaponry, specializing in one, while having low magical abilities (unless stated otherwise elsewhere).

The occupation/class of the character may, in some cases, over ride the race's general weaknesses. A solder, for example, will have been trained hard for war, therefore eliminating the cowardice trait common among humans.

Character/Profile Sheet
Appearance: He has brilliant blonde hair that contrasts with his sky blue eyes. His physique his lean and muscular, but no so much that he is just a mass of muscle. His face is well proportioned and even. In any other situation, he'd be a handsome man, someone to be jealous of. But war can do things to people. His once beautiful face is covered in countless scars to an extent he's almost indistinguishable form who he used to be. One of his eyes is permanently closed because he does not like to reveal the empty socket. His clothes are tattered and ratty, draped in a simple black trench coat covering his every day attire that's riddled with holes. He wears old black gloves and standard combat boots, so that he will leave no personal trace. To any tracker, he's just a faceless fighter.

The appearance of a character doesn't add much to their fighting ability, only to how others will perceive them. If you make the character sound like a villain and look like a villain, then it's only expected that the character is a villain. Going opposite, although fun and creates odd characters, seems overdone and alters the mood of your character, a character that can't seem to make up their mind.

The few things the character's appearance adds to their abilities is add to their strengths or weaknesses. This character only has one eye, therefore won't see attacks as clearly. Because his clothes are old and filled with holes, they'll make a very audible noise, making stealth attacks difficult. Appearance, although not always important sometimes applies. In some cases, pictures are preferred than to descriptions. It all depends on where you are, do what is applicable.

Character/Profile Sheet
Weapons: Standard Knight's Sword

The weapon is the characters form of general attacks. Through the weapon decides how fast and how strong their attacks will be. This character's sword is simple and lightweight, and only needs one hand. Attacks with this weapon will be at an average speed and deal average damage. Meaning that he can easily flow from attack to defense easier than someone with a larger battle-axe could.

Simply put, the weapons decide how other characters respond to yours in fights. Thief type characters attack fast, making it hard to defend against them, but they deal nearly no damage, so being hit isn't a concern. But because they move so fast, they can easily return to a defensive stance if they need to. Weapons will sometimes dictate if a character even has a chance to win a fight. Someone slower and stronger will have a hard time winning against a smaller and faster opponent. Although, the bigger character can't get lucky and end it with one hit.

Character/Profile Sheet
Skills/Abilities: Simple sword tricks

The skills/abilities of a character reflect the entire character as a whole. Because this character is only a simple solder, he doesn't have access to any magical abilities, or any other amazing talents. Just what he was taught. In most cases like this, where the character is only an extra that forwards storyline, it's not required to fill in their skills/abilities if they have none.

Skills/abilities don't have to be weighed on so heavily, though. In most RPs, people won't check on how your abilities match up with your character as a whole. In those cases, give the character abilities that are fair and can't be abused to an extent that they are ridiculous. (More on that later)

Character/Profile Sheet
Personality: Calm and collected, constantly vigilant in an effort to stay alive.

The personality is how the character thinks. It's how the RPer playing the character should think when using the character. Therefore, if a character is cowardly and stupid, if all of his allies are killed, he will more than likely run unless an extra element is in place. For Example, a stupid character that is also cowardly might forget that his allies are dead if he's already concentrating on a more pressing matter.

The personality also decides how characters react in situations, and the thing that gets most RPers is that they forget they're playing the character and not themself. It takes a fair deal of concentration and practice to fall into the role of the character.

Character/Profile Sheet
Bio: Nest was a quiet boy growing up, always staying out of everyone's way. But some bullies didn't like how their little victim was better than them. After some torture, he was thrown into the Forest of Aokigahara. He tried to make due with his living conditions, running whenever he was in danger. But a general found him quickly after, and he was drafted into the upcoming war. He's been hardened into a concentrated warrior, head and shoulders above his peers.

The bio gives other RPers a quick history on the character. In most cases it doesn't mean anything, but usually, the bio decides what abilities the character can have. Nowhere does it say that this character trained anywhere else but the barracks, so he only knows what he knows from that brief training period.

The bio also helps the RPer better assume the role of the character by giving the RPer background information they can use so they can associate with them much easier.

Character/Profile Sheet
Other: Has an inferiority complex

Usually, the Other part will remain blank. Mainly for the reason that most things can be classified under the other fields, but the other area is jsut for little tidbits that don't neccesarily belong in the skills/abilities, but aren't important enough to put in the bio. Not much else to say.

Now that we have analysed every aspect of the character/profile sheet, we should have one well suited for our upcoming War RP.

This sheet, is well made, and balanced. The character doesn't scream "Unstoppable" and has plenty of room to grow as the RP progresses. This is a good model to follow when creating 'sheets.

•RP Styles•
Welcome your second lesson. This brief lesson will bring you all up to speed and how we want you to RP.

There are three levels of RPing skill: Newbie, Semi-Literate, and Literate.

Let's discuss the newbie levels first. Frowned upon in most cases, it's a very laxed style used commonly in bar situations or by newer RPs.

As I did with the Character/Profile sheet, I'll dissect these simple posts to create a simpler understanding.

A sample from Barton Town.
Newbie Sample
*i walked upbehind u and slashed u with my sowrd* haha i killed you

Let's take a look at this. The first give away for a Newbie RPer is the way they type. In most cases, Newbies tend to use chat speak, referring to improper grammar and spelling. Most experienced RPers are okay with it, and won't call them on it. But they will find it irritating when they can't understand what you're writing. Also take notice of the asterisks. The asterisks are a good starting point for every RPers just starting out, using them to highlight which words are actions and which aren't. Very standard and makes the RPing between two people on different levels slightly easier. Please note the first person perspective. In most cases, Newbies tend to refer to themselves in the first person for RPs. Also notice the godmoding and auto-hitting. They also have difficulties developing plot, usually just wanting to fight.

A sample from Barton Town
Semi-Literate Sample
Beads of sweat beginning to form on his brow, Rins was still being harassed in his dream. The screaming never stopped. The eyes that watched him with the utmost hate never blinked. Everything was quiet, except the endless shrieking.

And there he stood. Letting all of it sink in, a reminder of his horrible wrongs. Only this consuming guilt would give him the strength to dull his senses so he may carry out the task that lay before him. It had been a long time since Rins had been forced to fight the he had only a few hours ago.

Remaining still, Rins wished he could return to the silence of his home where his dreams were not plagued by memory.

This is the level we would like most of our members to try for. The first thing you will notice is the proper grammar and spelling. This simple and first step to ascending the levels of RP can easily be done by copying and pasting into a word file with a spell check. Although a simple rule, the proper punctuations and spellings not only make RPing easier, but also speed up the process in a sense that others don't have to ask what is going on.

Also notice the constant use of adjectives and adverbs. Although the foundation of literate RPing, if over used, it makes the post seem blander that it would be if it were just blank. Just think clutter. Note that not everything is action, but story/character development. In the more RPs you try, you will notice that most are more story driven than fight-based, so being able to add another dimension to your character is encouraged, adding a sense of reality to them for other RPers to take into account when trying to forward the story themselves.

A sample from Barton Town
Literate Sample
Kavelle sighed and turned to face Lokth. He was older then her, maybe by 10 years, 15. She never could tell on just appearance. He'd been a general most of her time in service.
"Your concern is noted but I went there to concentrate." Kavelle looked back onto the small forest, the ache returning in both her shoulder and head. "The camp is efficient but I enjoy being alone when dealing with problems. And I'm hardly alone in the camp. "Her eyes drifted down to the bottom of the hill, not looking at anything in particular-merely staring.
"But I've been away too long." she said softly and shaking her head.
"Come, General. We must celebrate. After Liftal is taken then we head to Vargas. Soon reality will be realized." Kavelle grinned as she thought of the next few skirmishes. They were closing in on Delva. All this time, effort, and finally it would be hers.

Courtesy of Vanair

This is a sample of top-grade RPing. The first thing is that the post is visibly longer than any of the others, but not so long that other RPers get bored halfway though; it's a good length. Also take notice of the spot-on grammar and spelling, with almost no mistakes. It forwards plot development while also interacting with other characters, even introducing background of the characters from the profile page. The more literate an RPer becomes, the more every post they make feels like it's an exert from a greater piece of writing.

Also, the use of other nouns besides the proper name. In most cases, RPers just use "him/her" and other pronouns, but it takes a fair deal of thinking to create an alternate name that describes it well. For example, in the above post, the other character, Lokth, is said to be a general who has serverd longer than the speaker Kavelle. So other than his name, she referred to him as a General. It's sounds simple, but if this technique is over-used, your writing begins to sound very bland.

•----•

On a final note, these are merely guidelines on what to expect. By no means should you classify anyone under any of these "styles", but use them strictly as a guide to improve on yourself.

•Actually Rping•
Welcome your third lesson. This quick lesson will bring you all up to speed and how to RP.

Now that you know what Rping looks like, it's time to get down to actually RPing.

These are the golden rules of RPing that almost every Rper is familiar with. Learn these rules and know that they are the basis of Rping.

Golden Rule the First
Thou shall comply with the rules of the English language

It's surprising how many people forget this rule, while being completely aware of it. This isn't a requirement to be a great Rper, it just makes your post seem more professional, and others think better of you and are more willing to RP with you. It's as simple as using a word program with a spell check. You won't be penalized, it just common courtesy.

Golden Rule the Second
Thou shall be considerate of others

Again pretty straight forward. Just be aware. When two people are having a serious fight, don't butt in unless the plot calls for it. When people are talking on the other side of the country, you can't randomly appear there to add your opinion. If someone slices off your arm, you can't use that arm to slice off his. Standard stuff, but some people are just completely oblivious to such things.

Golden Rule the Third
Thou shalt not forget team spirit

An RP is not about one character, even if they are the central pivot point for the story. The RP can't move forward if it's just one person doing all the work. Like wise, one person should not shrug off their responsibilities. Everyone is part of the RP, everyone should work just as hard, no matter how minor his or her character is, unless they have r/l complications that can't be helped. This may be just a hobby, but when you're Rping with other people, you're making a mutual agreement to show up and do your part. It's like being on a team. When you sign up, are prepared for the task at hand, or dont bother applying.

Golden Rule the Fourth
Thou shall share their concerns with others

Don't let your personal annoyances go unnoticed. If something is bothering you or making you feel uncomfortable, then say so. Odds are, someone else in the group will feel the same way. You can do it through PM or the RP, just say something. Resolve so you can RP unhindered by what is bothering you.

Golden Rule the Fifth
Thou shall flex thy creative muscle

Despite all these rules, remember to have fun with it. Throw your own personal flair into the way you RP. And I don't just mean with your post set-up or text color. Every Rper just has a certain style about them that is indescribable. When you look at their posts, you'll eventually know what I'm talking about. Every Rper has a specific pattern and way to RP. Flex your creative muscle, so when you RP, they know who it is ^^

Now that you know the basics, it's time to begin. In the last lesson, you got a good look at examples of Rping, so you know what you're aiming for. Rping is as simple as following the rules and examples.

Besides that, there's not much else. You know what you're aiming for and you know the criteria. A few tips I have though:

Be descriptive. Tell everyone what the room your standing in looks like. Tell them what that crazy stranger looks like.

Keep the action moving. If the RP is starting to slow down, try to keep things moving while staying to the story line.

Have fun and keep it fresh. What keep me coming here on a regular basis is how deep and fun everyone I RP with makes the site.

And that was your third lesson. If there was anything vague, then PM me or an active crew member to clear things up.

•Fighting•
Welcome to your fourth lesson. I have devoted a lesson to RP fighting because almost every RP has fights, and depending on how well the participants are, it can be incredibly enjoyable for them and the others who are watching, or incredibly frustrating for every person in the RP.

You already know the basic rules of Rping, and they are the basis of what Fighting is. First I will explain the Platinum Rule of Fighting!
The Platinum Rule of Fighting
Thou shall not God Mod!

The deadliest of sins. To break this rule is to show disregard for all common courtesy of the Internet. No one, and I mean no one, will tolerate this. God Moding is when someone becomes "God", meaning they can't die and they can do what ever they want. Refer back to the Second Lesson for an example of the horrendous act. And sometimes it isn't even that obvious. Simply put, it's when one person controls all aspects of the fight. This can be done by auto-kill, auto-hitting, auto-dodging, and pretty much sucking the fun and creativity out of the fight. Be on constant lookout for this.

Remember, there are ways to deal with this. As soon as you catch someone god-moding, do something about it. There are many rational and simple ways to go about this without disrupting the RP too much.
Talk to the thread creator. They'll probably already know about this and have done something about it. But whatever the case, tell them what's going on. They'll probably tell who over is god-modding to stop or leave the thread. Simple as that
Talk to the perpetrator. In a calm and collected fashion. Personally, whenever I'm in such a situation I send them a PM telling them what they're doing, without being too much of an a**. Usually, they'll take offense to it, even deny it, but continue to keep cool. Just try to calm them down.
Leave. Sometimes there is no option, but to leave. Only invoke this in the worst possible situation. When all reason fails, odds are the RP wasn't worth fighting for.

Although, God moding is a major offence, note above that I mentioned other terms, as well. These alone are minor violations of the net etiquette of Rping , but collectively they make up the evil entity that is God Moding. There are more terms than the fore mentioned, and I will explain all of them within my knowledge.

Auto-Kill. This above and beyond annoying and one of the main driving forces of God Moding. As the name implies, it is when one automatically kills something. Unless dealing with lesser minions, this is strictly prohibited. Killing RP characters and any pets/summons attached to those players have to be played out.
Auto-Hit. Another important factor that couples nicely with the Auto-Kill. As the name implies, this is when you always hit, no matter what. No matter the odds, always hit.
Auto-Dodge. Not as annoying as the first two, but in a class of its own. No matter how great a warrior someone is, no matter how quick or stealthy, they will get hit. This is something God Moders enjoy a lot.
Speed Hack/Munching. I was actually the victim of this quite recently. This is when someone doesn't wait for your response over the course of multiple posts. They could get you in the jaw, and then immediately make a second post that say they just got you in the ribs.
A quick diagram
Your post
•Their Post
•Their Post
•Your post

• This one in particular does not have a name, but I simply call it "Stupid". It's basically when nothing makes sense. It's like you've got him pinned against a wall, and in the next post, he wiping your innards off his sword that was lost on the other side of the room. Or you knocked him out cold and through some "unbridled determination" they revive themselves with enough energy to defeat you and then some. Mindless crap simply put.
As I remember more, I'll add to this list. NOTE: In some cases, you can negotiate with a person over PM to do one of the above four (omitting the last) to forward story line.

Now that you know the basics, time to get started. When beginning a fight, have some motivation. Dont come out of nowhere wanting to fight. Build up to it and only begin when the storyline calls for it to climax the scene. Usually initiate the to fight by using the first attack or readying a defensive stance, this way the other Rper has room to start. Depending on how you started they can either block, dodge, get hit, or attack, which ever best supports the story line.

All fight posts work off the block, dodge, get hit, or attack model. Often, multiple will be used at a time, depending. Remember to use them in conjunction accordingly. Most often the attack option will be used, but can be omitted for storyline development.

First of all, when blocking or dodging an attack, weigh the circumstances heavily in your mind. How badly injured is your character, and how does it affect your reflexes? What are the current obstacles? How stable is the terrain and how much does it affect the attack? What is the character's current disposition; are they too angry to see reasonably or are they so intimidated by their opponent they're stricken with fear? These questions are the most common ones, but others can and will appear. Just answer these and weigh your answers before typing anything. If you're character has taken a heavy beating, you're on uneven ground, and your tired from fighting all night, odds are you're going to take a hit.

Attacking is slightly different. There are a few questions that determine how you should attack, but they aren't always as influential. Is my character in a good enough condition to use this attack? Does my character even know this attack? Simple questions like these are all that are needed to decide whether or not your attack makes sense. Different from blocking/dodging however is avoiding the fore mentioned offenses. Remember to leave options open for your opponent. Fighting isn't always a competition, it's a way to improve an RP. Give them options while also limiting them. Say you throw four spears in quick succession. You've limited his movement and give him the option of taking the attack, attempting to jump or duck, or parry as many as possible. Don't constrict them too badly.

As long as you abide by these rules, Rping should be an enjoyable experience for everyone and I guarantee you will feel much happier with yourself after you've seen how it affects the over all progression of the story.

And that was your fourth lesson. If there was anything vague, then PM me or an active crew member to clear things up.

•Knowing When to Draw the Line•
Welcome your fifth and final lesson. A brief discussion on the proper etiquette of Rping.

There are four things that are rude and irritating that most should try to avoid. I will go through them and explain. Avoid these as often as possible.

Thing One
Over Cussing. Yes, swearing makes a character look bad a**. But if used in excess, makes the character look like a buffoon with no grasp of the English language. It's also very irritating to read. Avoid as best as you can, swearing only when a character is like that in nature or is in a real dire situation.

Thing Two
Punctuality. Try to be on time and appear on a weekly basis. One of the most irritating things in the world is when an RP stalls because a character is missing for a few weeks. It's not fair to the people you are Rping with and is rude. Unless plagued by a r/l complication, such as work or no computer, then try to be on regularly.

Thing Three
Hostility. If you don't like the people you're Rping with, don't RP with them. Most people don't like it when they're being personally attacked when they're trying to enjoy themselves. Rp elsewhere and don't be a jerk about it. It's best for you and the others.

Thing Four
Hormones. Sometimes things might get a little hot and heavy in an RP but don't let it get the better of you. Don't break character for the sake of those crazy chemicals. Just don't get to carried away, y'know? ;3

And that was your fifth and final lesson. Please stay tuned for a message from the guild master.
