The ones that come to mind (that matter to me) would be Ella Hooper from Killing Heidi and Kim Deal from The Pixies and The Breeders.
But yes, like Grim has already mentioned, there aren't many of them. I have heard many others like Joan Jett, Patricia Day and Rose "Casper" Mazzola, but none of them really interest me music wise.

There are a ton of great female artists out there - You just have to do a bit of searching to find them.
Some great girl bands/artists/bands with girl singers:
Veruca Salt TATU Le Tigre Peaches Regina Spektor Inara George L7 Garbage The Distillers
And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I've heard of the Distillers, they've got some good music and T.A.T.U as well, those two as good singers. Actually Tegan and Sara are both good singers, they're twins, mostly emo music though. Utada Hikaru is a good Jpop singer who actually sings, my god she's got a beautiful voice as well, most of you know that she sings english music as well. Also The Cranberries, though they are not to popular, their song Zombie, plays on the rock station I listen to all the time.

xXx White Lily xXx but when you compare that to the amount of guys in bands.. it's kinda pathetic really... dunno why it is... I play drums but I aint in a band sweatdrop This isn't from me so please don't try to make me sound sexist but according to my band's (which is now dead) bass/cello player, she said that it was because rock is mostly a "men's club" and although things have certainly changed, most female vocalists still prefer using strong harmonious melodies, which makes them very popular in genres such as opera, country and pop-rock... but not so much in genres such as punk, hardcore, metal or heavy grunge.

that is an interesting point 3nodding I sometimes wonder if it's because guys seem to have more dedication to learning instruments. I mean this in general, I dont want a load of female musicians having a go at me saying they're dedicated, I know there's plenty of dedicated female musicians out there.. I just wonder if maybe more males are more dedicated question

I just wonder if maybe more males are more dedicated question I believe that to be true because yea I'm dedicated but chicks are a little more restless than guys by nature so they can get bored with doing the same old thing or same old routine, they'd want to change it up a bit. I mean I admit I get bored a little but we always shake things up a bit. See I don't always sing about guys I sing about girls too, because my brothers know I don't have a problem with it and that I do go both ways and in many ways I can relate to it being a chick myself. But Yea I totally agree with you about it's a good point.

Siouxsie Sioux is amazing. Her voice, attitude and sex appeal could go up against any of her male peers 3nodding . Same with Wendy O' Williams and Chrissie Hynde
