...and it's AWESOME! I finally get to play as Ovan in a game biggrin .
The gameplay in .hack//VERSUS mirrors that of the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm games. The character roster is disappointingly short, Featuring Kite, Haseo, Sayaku, Sora, Blackrose, Tsukasa, Ovan, and an Older Tokio, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, excluding Tsukasa, he just sucks, but I'll touch on that later. Each character has anywhere from 3-4 skills, an Exceed skill which takes up 25, 50, 75, or 100 percent of the Skill bar when activated, using the Exceed can completely change your character (AIDA Ovan or Xth Form Haseo), or simply enhance your speed and strengh, and in one special case, causes time to freeze for your opponent for a short amount of time (Tokio). Finally, everybody has an Ultimate Skill, most of the time these can't be used while using an Exceed, the only exception being Sora. The Ultimate Skill always takes away 100% of your skill bar, which is filled up by collecting Chim-Chims or by attacking/being attacked.

Kite - Of .hack//IMOQ Fame
Everybody knows who Kite is, He's the kid that started it all upon finding himself in a tale of Corruption, the original bearer of the Twilight Bracelet. His moveset is nothing flashy, but at the same time one of the stronger ones in the game, with it all accumulating with, in my personal opinion, the most amazing Data Drain featured in a piece of .hack media yet, Seriously, if you haven't seen it yet, do your self a favor and look it up on youtube, seriously...I'll wait....Finally, Kite's Exceed makes him stronger and adds a tri-edge-like attack to his arsenal, while he is sounded in Blue Flames.

Haseo - Of .hack//Roots and G.U. Fame
The selfish and rude protagonist of the G.U. games and the Epitaph User (sometimes) in control of the Terror of Death, Skeith, is back with a Flashy, strong, and disappointing Moveset. What disappoints me most about Haseo is how VERSUS handles Job Extends, they chose to make his first form his standard outfit in this game, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense since two of his 3 skills result in him...transforming into another job extend..both times rapidly changing clothes..? Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense, seeing as how his 3rd Form is the form seen most throughout the .hack//G.U. series, being in the majority of both Reminiscence and Redemption. His Exceed is the Xth Form, being able to distance himself with fast moving bullets and powerful skills makes it one of the better exceeds in the game. His Ultimate skill of course features Skeith brutally ripping apart your opponent.

Sayaku - Of .hack//Quantum Fame
Sayaku, the star of the 3 part OVA .hack//Quantum is assisted by the illegal character, Hermit. She's fast but weak, has absolutely no guard breaking Skills, utilizing Hermit is a must to win any fight, and there in-lies the problem with her. Hermit's attacks seem to be random at best, the only way to control Hermit is though the use of one of Sayaku's 3 skills, and all that does is makes him toss a very easily avoidable smoke bomb. Sayaku's Exceed makes her move just a bit faster and increases her strength slightly, her Ultimate Skill Consists of Hermit opening a portal to the Death Tree, something featured in the Quantum OVA.

Sora - Of .hack//Beyond the World Fame
We round out the Kite Look-a-likes with Sora, the main character of the Movie that VERSUS is packaged with. Sora, as in the movie, is slow, clumsy, and weak. While everybody elses exceed lasts for a limited amount of time, Sora's Exceed "Level Up" is permanent until she gets knocked down, and can be used twice, after the second one, Sora moves faster and is capable of not falling over while hitting her opponent. Sora's Ultimate skill is composed of her buddys, look-a-likes of Balmung and Orca, attacking her opponent.

Blackrose - Of .hack//IMOQ Fame
Blackrose is the powerful Broadsword wielding bad a** from the .hack//IMOQ series, She's strong but slow, with a big emphasis of strong, one of her skills does almost as much damage as her Ultimate skill, and she looks bad a** while doing it too. That's not to say her Ultimate skill is bad either, she knocks the opponent around like a rag doll, before launching herself off the ceiling, smashing her sword into the opponents chest as she continues to plummet with their weak, fragile bodies dangling in the wind before the almighty power of her powerful blade, all before crashing to the ground blade first absolutely decimating any chance of the opponent leading a meaningful life ever again. Her exceed further cements her status as the most bad a** female in the .hack series, making nearly all of her attacks guard breaking and speeding her up to normal speeds.

Tsukasa - Of .hack//SIGN
Tsukasa is the silent girl from the the first anime of the long lasting .hack series, always being a loner until she came across a chest that gave her a Guardian with a terrible power. If only that description matched what she's like in VERSUS. I'll be frank here, Tsukasa sucks, there's no other way to put it, she is absolutely terrible in this game. Her main combo consists of her shooting extremely slow moving balls of energy at her opponents, none of which actually knock the opponent down, or do any actual damage. That must mean she's amazing in the Skill department, right? No, not at all, the only character to take up all four skill buttons, Two are close range, two are long range. Her long range ones have her shoot 4 fast moving rays of light at her opponents, all 4 easily dodged, and barely do better damage than her combo shots, the second hurls a large, and slow meteor at the opponent, it does considerable damage, but it's so easy to dodge you can pretty much move a foot to either side and it won't hit you. The close range attacks have her make a spike shoot from the ground, which won't actually hit unless the opponent is on top of you, or lay down a trap that even the AI is smart enough to avoid. Tsukasa's Exceed consists of her summoning her Guardian, but it's horrible, the attacks barely damaging, have a horrible range, and the Guardian lags behind Tsukasa barely making it worth summoning. The only good thing is Her Ultimate skill, but you'll be so busy using all of your skill gauge to just barely stay alive, you'll never end up using it.

Ovan - Of .hack//Roots and G.U. Fame
Ovan is of course the antagonist for the better half of the .hack//G.U. series, the wielder of the Eighth Epitaph, Corbenik, The Rebirth. Ovan starts out incredibly slow, he actually just walks, I can't decide if that's more of a con or just plain bad a**. He has a basic combo that actually Guard breaks and does a pretty good amount of damage, since he is hitting his opponent over the head with his giant arm coffin, after all. His skills consist of him shooting his gun at the opponent, sort of like Tsukasa's Combo attacks, except more powerful, and harder to dodge, he can also shoot bullets into the sky causing them to rain down on the opponents location. His Ultimate Skill has him bust his arm out of the arm coffin, summoning the Avatar Corbenik, who uses the massive cannon to absolutely destroy the opposition. But none of this compares to him after he's activated his Exceed, which, as I am sure you guessed has him unlock the AIDA arm from it's prison. AIDA Ovan is easily the fastest character in the game, he's got a normal combo reach of almost 1/8 the size of the Arena, holding back while performing a combo causes him to juggle his opponent around resulting in a 30 hit combo that can easily be continued. His Skills are nothing but amazing, the first causes him to shoot AIDA dots out of his arm, confusing the opponent as Ovan closes in, grabs the opposition's head and slams it into the ground, his next Skill consists of the AIDA arm slashing diagonally slicing up the opponent, his final skill is, of course, his famous Tri-Edge attack, scarring both the groud and the opponent permanently. Ovan's Exceed only lasts 30 seconds, but if you didn't annihilate the opponent in that amount of time, you should pretty much be ashamed of your self.

Tokio - Of .hack//LINK Fame
I actually haven't played as him yet, he's not featured in the story mode as a playable character, I can tell you that Tokio, or 9 as he is referred to in this game, has grown up quite a bit, he's at least in his 20's by now, wears a black hoodie and jeans, his hair is shorter and more tame, and he no longer wields the dual blades. From what I can gather, I believe he is some sort of hacker using an illegal character in the game, this is just a presumption though.

EDIT 09/20/12: Added more information about the basic gameplay mechanics in the beginning paragraph. Also edited out some of Ovan's paragraph, mostly the explanation about how Exceed's work.

Yup, still in Japanese, but most of the necessary menus are in English and/or easily accessible.

I heard some people say that, I know absolutely nothing about SAO, so personally I can't say if it is or not, but .hack is so brilliant, I don't see how it could be better.

I tried to make every he I typed out when writing the Tsukasa section a she, since she is a chick, I might have missed a few >.< Same with Sora D:
